Bill Clinton: Purdum a "Sleazy" "Slimy" "Scumbag"

?>

Click below to listen to audio of Bill Clinton on a ropeline discussing "The Comeback Id," Todd Purdum's controversial Vanity Fair article.

MILBANK, S.D. -- Former President Bill Clinton today unleashed a salty stream of epithets to describe former New York Times reporter and current Vanity Fair writer Todd Purdum, calling him "sleazy," "dishonest," "slimy" and a "scumbag."

The former president made the comment at a local campaign event after I asked him if Purdum's much-commented upon Vanity Fair story was weighing on his mind.

Tightly gripping this reporter's hand and refusing to let go, Clinton heatedly denounced the writer, who is currently married to former Clinton White House Press Secretary, Dee Dee Myers.

"[He's] sleazy," he said referring to Purdum. "He's a really dishonest reporter. And one of our guys talked to him . . . And I haven't read [the article]. But he told me there's five or six just blatant lies in there. But he's a real slimy guy," the former president said.

When I reminded him that Purdum was married to his former press spokesperson Myers, Clinton was undeterred.

"That's all right-- he's still a scumbag," Clinton said. " Let me tell ya-- he's one of the guys -- he's one of the guys that propagated all those lies about Whitewater to Kenneth Starr. He's just a dishonest guy-- can't help it."

Purdum's piece, featured in this month's edition of Vanity Fair, included former advisers criticizing former President Clinton for bringing negative attention to Hillary Clinton's candidacy and for surrounding himself with friends who might discredit her campaign.

The former president's tirade continued:

"The editor of Esquire-- he sent us an email yesterday and said it was the single sleaziest piece of journalism he'd seen in decades. He said it made him want to go take a shower and he was embarrassed to be a journalist when he read it."

"You know he didn't use a single name, cite a single source in all those things he said. It's just slimy. It's part of the national media's attempt to nail Hillary for Obama. It's just the most biased press coverage in history. It's another way of helping Obama. They had all these people standing up in this church cheering, calling Hillary a white racist, and he didn't do anything about it. The first day he said 'Ah, ah, ah well.' Because that's what they do-- he gets other people to slime her. So then they saw the movie they thought this is a great ad for John McCain-- maybe I better quit the church. It's all politics. It's all about the bias of the media for Obama. Don't think anything about it."

"But I'm telling ya, all it's doing is driving her supporters further and further away-- because they know exactly what it is-- this has been the most rigged press coverage in modern history-- and the guy ought to be ashamed of himself. But he has no shame. It isn't the first dishonest piece he's written about me or her."

"Anytime you read a story that slimes a public figure with anonymous quotes, it oughta make the bells go off in your head. Because anytime somebody uses those things-- he wrote the story in his head in advance, and he just goes around and tries to find some coward to say whatever they want to say, hoping to get some benefit out of it. It didn't bother me. It shouldn't bother you."

"Thank you, Mr. President," I said attempting to end the conversation.

But Clinton continued. "He can't help it," he said. "He still hasn't apologized to me for Whitewater."

Update: President Clinton's spokesman Jay Carson issued a statement in response to this article: "President Clinton was understandably upset about an outrageously unfair article, but the language today was inappropriate and he wishes he had not used it."

Update: Esquire spokesperson sent the following statement. "David Granger did not send an e-mail to Bill Clinton about the Vanity Fair article. One of the editors on staff sent a personal note about the piece to Doug Band, who was written about in the article. That was a private e-mail, and Band has since apologized to Esquire that it became public."

Gee, I guess that Bill really found out what it like to be a scum bag. I really admired the man until this year when he went off the deep end to "help" his wife.

He just can't understand why the people of this country are tired of the same old s--- for the last 20 years and want a change that Hillary can't even begin to give the country.

Bye, bye Bill make more money on the speaking tour and write a book about a certain blue dress.

This is hilarious: Bill Clinton accusing someone of being dishonest.

Mr. I did not have sex with that woman and his wife who lied to the grand jury.

At least he doesn't let reality interfere with his life.

Bill Clinton in the past months has come unhinged. He has lost his aplomb. The biggest problem he has in this is that he seems to be using his wife's difficulties to apologize for his own. It's unseemly for the man, who put his wife (not to mention his avid followers) through an inevitable, months long daily torture of a world wide broadcasting of cigars, blow jogs, and semen stains shouted from every mountain top and media outlet, to claim that his wife's political rival, who has behaved in a far more gentlemanly manner, is somehow culpable for the kind of sleazeball reporting that his extracurricular activities have for decades now attracted. He's gone, tragically, from unjustifiably persecuted to joke to boorish buffoon before our very eyes. He appears determined to slash and burn his wife's career with each new outburst, something he would have never done with his own career on the line.

Quoting: "When I reminded him that Purdum was married to his former press spokesperson Myers, Clinton was undeterred."

Gee, really?! Such an incisive, brilliant refutation didn't impress him?! Wow. Astounding. (*)

"...So then they saw the movie they thought this is a great ad for John McCain-- maybe I better quit the church. It's all politics. "

Anyone who doubts the obvious fact that Obama's show of quitting the church was pure political expediency stands in serious need of a brain transplant. This is just another illustration of the fact that grandiloquent, done-nothing rookie senator Obama will do anything to get the nomination, after which he would do anything to get the Commander in Chief job, which is way beyond his demonstrated level of competence.

(*) I reckon it's necessary to specifically tell you that that comment was sarcasm.

I am not replying to the previous post, this is the only way to get on the site right now.

Hey Bill, you didn't say Purdum wasn't telling the truth, did you??

Putting aside what we think of Clinton's remarks, the issue remains whether the tactics that created Bittergate and Purdumgate are helpful. In the former, Obama was taped surreptitiously by someone attending a closed event, where he assumed he could speak candidly; in the latter, Clinton was ambushed by a reporter not wearing Press credentials, who did not identify herself as a reporter, who asked for his comments on the "hatchet job" and who egged him on by laughing at jokes.

The argument in favor of these tactics is that they reveal public figures as they "really are."

The argument against them is that they increase the likelihood that public figures will always follow "the script" and not give insight into their personalities, other than to trusted friends and family. The circle of those who see "another side" will grow ever smaller. Reporters won't be able to inform their reporting with a sense of who the candidate is. Even ardent supporters and major donors won't get a true view of the candidate that they can share with a broader audience.

In the past, candidates felt safe letting their hair down because there was a clear set of rules. Reporters identified themselves and there were demarcations among "on the record," "off the record," etc. There was always the chance that staff members would blab in books, but they wouldn't appear until the heat of the moment had passed. Now, those rules are "inoperative," and I think things are worse for it.

MSM reporters like JJK are upset about loss of turf. They should blame their own incompetence and failure to follow journalistic principles.
07:09 PM on 06/05/2008
The article might not have been too flattering towards Clinton and I guess he has the right to be upset, but that was a very poor choice of words on his part and has the potential to hurt him as well as his wife politically (and also strain his relationship with Dee Dee Myers...)

Well, Bill Clinton was a terrific president. He's human. Wouldn't you be pissed? And in fact he had received a letter from an independent source--the editor at Esquire, so that was true--that agreed the Vanity Fair article was nasty. If this is indeed the guy who inspired the Whitewater crap, then I believe Mr. Clinton was right. He's no longer president. He's allowed to get pissed off. Wouldn't you?

That is what is so cool about Obama, he is not a whiner. He always takes the high road. I loved Bill and Hillary, but this campaign really made them look like they would eat their young if they had to and it made Barak look honorable and thoughtful in contrast.

He didn't receive a letter from the editor at Esquire -- just another lie from Clinton.

Those who think Bill and Hillary are pursued by "a vast right-wing conspiracy" should consider that was Hillary's response to the proceedings during her husband's impeachment. Note that at no time does a Clinton really take the blame for anything. The Paula Jones thing was all a GOP plot. Really? Didn't Bill have anything to do with that? Gee, I guess he did, but of course that depends on what the meaning of is is. They take us all for fools, and they did fool 18,000,000 of us again.

God preserve the Republic.

I'm glad you posted the audio. Clinton's language in print gave me the impression of an uncontrolled rant--he is rather calm about reciting his allegations about Purdom. The that should be investigated and reported: ARE CLINTON"S ALLEGATIONS TRUE? Did Purdem publish unsubstantiated and untrue information about Whitewater? Are the contents of the Vanity Fair article in fact false and misleading? I'd like to know.

Dear Bill, thank you and Hillary for fighting so hard in the white house as to get rid of the defecit & create 8 years of peace & prosperiity when it seemed impossible. We all know you & Hillary can do it, have done it, & would be able to dp ot again Even tho' the task is much harder this time.

I agree with what you said, I have the Ken Starr's book, I watched what the did to you ywo everyday, even predicted alot of it. It's amazing how much you got done in spite the The far Right Conspiracy that stalked you day & night. Amazing they could only get you on non sex sex story. I lived in DC & I know what went on there. I know few innocent politicians. I do not condone it, but it's the majority of thinking in government.

If Starr went after everyone like he went after you, we'd have very few left in government. impeachment branded us all over the world as fools. To have people mock Hillary for not leaving you should only come out of people's mouth who have never either cheated or thought of cheating on their spouses, one reason we have so many divorced & unhappy people now ,

McCain is a womanizer & Obama is also known for his sexual antics. Obamamites best be ready for that , they seem to think he's different. He's not.. Will that change your opinion of him ?

Bill Clinton calling someone else slimy and a scumbag is like Barry Bonds calling someone else a steroid user.... I like how he drags Obama and his church fiasco into this.... As if the Vanity Fair article was created by the Obama campaign...

"Anytime you read a story that slimes a public figure with anonymous quotes, it oughta make the bells go off in your head."

Bingo!

... unless those bells don't work in the first place -- in which case, swallow it whole and join the herd.

What's Mayhill Fowler going to do, now that her hero Bill Clinton is no longer going to be much in the public eye anymore? I'm amazed she came out of her hiding so soon after her massive gaffe about North Carolina.

She's a rank amateur, not a professional journalist. Get some training, Mayhill. Real training.
05:11 PM on 06/04/2008
Did Mayhill Fowler identify herself as a Huffington Post reporter prior to questioning Bill Clinton?

While Fowler's “Bitter” and “scumbag” stories were national breaking news, they failed to pass the test of integrity and conduct expected from most professional journalists.

Ms. Fowler is simply a paparazzi with a tape recorder instead of a camera.

Alie...this is a huge non-issue. Any third grader knows these words. The whole thing is set up
to poison people's minds about Bill. He's not perfect but neither is Barack. I don't really unnnderstand the media bias. It's like Murdock bought them all.
10:21 AM on 06/06/2008
How is it "bias" when they have audio...

Bill needs to stop blaming the Obama campaign and the media for his wife's failure to secure the nomination. People just don't like her...so what?!

Just because the Clintons feel entitled does not mean they are. Obama is the better candidate, period.

Last I checked, this was still a democracy. The people have spoken, so shut up already!
07:27 PM on 06/04/2008
Why should identify herself? Bill Clinton is responsible for what comes out of his mouth.
