GET UPDATES FROM Mel Walsh

Mel Walsh's latest book, Hot Granny (Chronicle Books), offers humorous, practical advice for women 50 and better. On Huff/Post 50, Mel writes about everything that can happen when one travels on the outskirts of age. Each post from Mel has at least one piece of usable info, a few flashes of humor and always a bit of comfort that one is not alone on the journey.

As a columnist, Mel has been syndicated by King Features and has had columns in the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News. With an MA in Gerontology from USC, Mel consults about later life and speaks nationally (CBS Early Show, AARP Expo) about life past 50. She's been the spokesperson for two internationally distributed food/wine products.

Mel has also written, produced and hosted a weekly FM radio show for older adults called Second Wind and wrote 200 newspaper columns by the same name. She's been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, and has been called "the thinking woman's Erma Bombeck." However, she thinks of herself as the older adult's back fence neighbor.

She lives with Cranky Pants, a later-life husband, who appears in her columns. Together they have 6 adult offspring and some small people who claim to be grandchildren.

Mel's book of advice, Hot Granny, is a great gift and can be found on Amazon. Mel can be Twittered: @MelWalshWriter. Her CBS Early Show interview about Hot Granny is on YouTube. Search: Mel Walsh CBS.

I never thought I'd grow up young.

The 3,000 Mile Umbilical Cord

(1) Comments | Posted June 11, 2012 | 2:23 PM

It's funny about umbilical cords. If they are supposedly cut at birth, then why am I still connected in some ancient, mammalian way to generations of my family -- even though they live 3,000 miles away?

It must be a weird inherited thing. My mom had it, too. She lived...

Some days I think I am no smarter than your average roadside weed. That's because every year, come summer, I have to re-learn ways to stay cool and comfy when the temp goes over ninety. But then again, I had to re-read Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care after the...

Yep, we all know that carry on luggage is the way to travel -- no waiting in line to retrieve bags, no items stolen in the airport's back rooms, no lost luggage or baggage fees. So why doesn't everyone just carry on?

My guess is that some people pack their...

Feet -- gotta have them, but don't gotta love them, especially after decades of wear and tear. Hard to believe our moms used to plant loving little kisses on ours. But, over time, our feet may not only become unkissable, but worn out, misaligned and just plain painful to use....

I don't need a shrink, because I'm already shrunk. Over the years, I've measured the ever-diminishing me. I've lost two inches in height and I can't seem to find them anywhere except in a pair of platform shoes.

And I'm not alone. Just call us the incredible shrinking species. Humans...

I can't tell you how to fly over the rainbow, but I do know one way to make yourself miserable as mud. Here's how: Get a magnifying mirror. Then go on constant face patrol, a form of culturally-induced self-torture. Consult this mirror often. After all, you can't wear out a...
