Tripping the Live Target

The words "light show" conjure up all sorts of childhood memories for me: afternoons at the Hayden Planetarium, birthday parties at the now defunct magic house boutique Jeremy's Place. But nothing could mentally prepare me for the block party extravaganza that was Target's Kaleidoscopic Fashion Spectacular, a celebration of their fall '10 collection. Not to leave any stones unturned, the company rented out all 150 rooms of the Standard Hotel for this epic event, which drew the likes of Mary Louise Parker, Penn Badgley, Nina Garcia, Katrina Bowden, Prabal Gurung, Roxy Olin, Samantha Swetra, Mickey Boardman, and a very pregnant Georgina Chapman, all of whom enjoyed cocktails and mini burgers in the VIP Standard Biergarten.

The show itself, however, was open to the public. By the time I arrived (on the late side), the High Line, West 12th Street, and all of the rooftops were packed with onlookers, waiting for the show to begin as the dancers took elevators to their respective rooms. As the show was about to start, the Mother team, who seamlessly produced the event, gave each guest a pair of binoculars so all could see the show. You can check out the show in its entirety at target.com/spectacular. My favorite part? A dancing synched with light performance reminiscent of Bob Fosse's "Hey, Big Spender." What's yours?
