Thank You, Glenn Beck: The Sequel

Posted: 09/25/09 01:28 PM ET

A few weeks ago, Arianna Huffington graciously thanked Glenn Beck for helping to force Van Jones' resignation and position him to do what he does best: inspire and galvanize progressives and advance the initiatives the country needs most.

Likewise, Tides would like to extend our thanks to Glenn Beck for helping to generate additional attention for The Story of Stuff, one of the projects we proudly support.

While his assertions about The Story of Stuff (www.storyofstuff.com) were totally bizarre, the attention and support he brought to them was immensely beneficial.

We may have just found the best engine for progressives fundraising and organizing since Sarah Palin.

So thank YOU, Glenn Beck!

I'm suprised anyone with the Tides foundation is willing to post in a public forum, especially as their links with various special interest groups come to light, but the "Story of Stuff" itself has both good and bad points. The main argument Beck was making is that no politically funded work should be shown in Public Schools, whether it is produced by left or right wing organizations. I wouldn't even think this would be contreversial, as I would imagine most parents whose political inclinations lean toward the left wouldn't want right wing propaganda shown during school either. I agree with the major premise that the accumulation of "stuff" isn't necessarily healthy, I disapprove of the view that goverment needs to determine how much stuff we should have. One of the very first facts mentioned in "The Story of Stuff." is that military spending accounts for over 50% of federal tax revenue, and this is blatantly false. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, not exactly a bastion of right wing thought, puts Defense and Military spending combined at 21%, exactly the same as Social Security. The major disconnect is between those on the left who agree that is is the government's job to "take care of us" as "The Story of Stuff" says and those on the right who believe government should allow us to take care of ourselves.

I can only imagine what Beck said about the video, but it is something everyone should watch.

The video was sick and wrong. It's going to be removed from schools...guaranteed.
