The Internet meme is a viral tool with which to amuse, and sometimes to poke fun at social mores. It's a (usually) clever way to point out hypocrisy and ridiculousness, such as Mitt Romney's "binders full of women" comment from the last presidential debate. The Feminist Nazi meme, however, does not seem to be accomplishing any of these things.
C'mon, Internet. It's almost as if you've stopped trying.
With statements like, "Demands to be treated as an equal. Refuses to be a front line soldier because that's just for men," the meme reinforces sexist stereotypes, while (unfairly) implying that the majority of women think this way.
Here's the thing, meme creators, women don't.
Right wing talk show host and all-star provocateur Rush Limbaugh popularized the term in the 1990s, using it to define "obnoxious feminists" like Gloria Steinem and the National Organization for Women. Since then, Limbaugh has blamed feminazis for a variety of unrelated issues, including a study claiming that the size of the average male's genitalia has been shrinking for the past 50 years.
They're very powerful, these angry, fascist feminists.
To put them in their place, someone created this meme. Sigh.
Nothing about this is surprising or clever, and in some cases it doesn't even make sense. The whole tired, crass, retro thing mostly produces the reaction Jezebel writer Laura Beck described quite succinctly: "I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or poison our drinking water supply."
