Don't Forget Ed

Posted: 08/17/2012 7:25 pm

I'm an 18-year-old girl from Brooklyn who is determined to alter the course of this year's presidential election. I'm going to do it by getting everyone I know and everyone they know to ask President Obama and Governor Romney not to forget ed. Not forget who? Ed, as in education.

Campaigns and the press that cover them always highlight the issues that polls suggest are the most important. Today those issues are, understandably, creating new jobs and generating economic activity. Of course the candidates must tell us how they would put more Americans back to work and get our main streets buzzing again. We need their leadership on how to promote a strong economic recovery. But will they also tell us how they would stage a strong education recovery?

We desperately need one. American students rank 21st in science and 25th in math when compared to students in 30 industrialized countries. Twenty first place and 25th place? Imagine if American athletes placed 21st or 25th in Olympic medals in London. The outrage would be deafening. Demands for reform would be heard on every corner. Yet we have tolerated a steep decline in the ability of students like me to compete against the best and the brightest from other countries with barely a peep.

We can no longer afford to sit back and settle for the decline of our educational competitiveness. A good education is the key to the very things Americans care about most: economic growth, innovation, opportunity. Either we improve our schools or we watch other countries pass us by. It is that simple.

It's not that President Obama or Governor Romney don't understand the value of education. They do. Just look at the degrees both of these men obtained before they went on to great careers. But we have to let them know that leading in education is our top priority for the nation's future, and we must debate their plans for an educational recovery no matter what other issues they address on the campaign trail.

I graduated from Manhattan's LaGuardia High School in May. The school is known for inspiring the hit movie and TV show Fame. They even pipe the theme song through the AV system every morning during announcements to remind the talented and ambitious students of what they can do. But most of us will probably never be famous. Instead, we will be vying for jobs against kids like us from all over the world.

Whether we win those jobs comes down to the quality of our education. It does not take a PhD to figure out what will happen in a global economy if other countries invest more in their schools to prepare their youth for jobs. America will fall further behind unless we tell the candidates: Don't Forget Ed.

Make "Ed" get a private sector job. Kick him off the government dole once and for all.

Name one product or service that any government has ever produced better, cheaper and more abundantly than Capitalism.

Ask yourself if it isn't a conflict of interest for a government in a free society to control education.

Ask YOURSELF who will pay for a quality education in cash strapped, poverty stricken states, if not the Federal gov't? It is clearly in the best interest of the country to educate the populace to the highest possible platform, that's our future. It's the best investment a country can make. All you need to know is that Romney?ryan plan to cut federal education spending by 45% over the next 10 years.

Ask YOURSELF why some couple or single parent (due to irresponsible behavior on their part) has a right to expect ME to pay for the education of THEIR child. It never occurs to those on the Left that people should be responsible for their own choices. It never occurs to you that if someone has no expectation of 'help' that they might make better choices in the first place. It never occurs to you that subsidizing bad behavior invites more of the same.

Charity is voluntary, taking or "redistributing" is slavery.

Cuts? Prove it. Hell, don't bother, I'll be happy if your twisted fantasy is true. Life needs to be paid for. Do you work for free?

The Feds pay a small fraction of the cost of education right now!

In our district, Federal money is aout 9% of the budget.......which is why they should have little say it what happens.

I don't have the time or energy to repeat the long rebuttal as it is useless to instruct the porcine in vocal technique.

Short answer.

Our government is based on DEMOCRACY, not capitalism.

Wrong, genius. Our government is based on individual rights - which implies Capitalism. Democracy is mentioned nowhere in our founding documents. It is specifically warned against in The Federalist Papers. So-called "democracy" is nothing more than tyrannical rule by any temporary majority.

Under a "democracy" would you accept the outlawing of abortion for any and every reason? Would you accept voter ID if the 'democratic majority' said it must be so? Would you accept the oppression of minorities because it received a 'democratic majority' of the vote? If I assembled a majority vote to deprive you of your life, liberty or property would you passively submit? That is 'democracy', after all...

I could say more, but the moderators might not like it. I will say that you desperately need a legitimate education on American civics. Clueless...

One reason we are going down is we are busy telling our kids how special they are, giving them everything. You want to help your kids, tell them they are not special, the world does not owe them anything including a job.

Tell them you want to be a success then work hard, you want money get a job. Or we could just have them living in our basements playing xbox until they are 33.

Right. Kids are spoiled rotten and when they have to face the real world they can't cope.

I see great promise in high-quality, affordable online education. I believe online learning from High Speed Universities can challenge students to learn deeply, apply the content to their current and future careers and life goals, and challenge current assumptions and worldviews. All of which increase engagement and could lead to higher graduation rates.

On line ed is our only hope. Ditch the teachers.
