I usually try not to blog on here unless I am able to reinforce my roll as intellectual parsley in this grand banquet of geo-political discourse.
Still I figure no one but me is going to use this forum to mention the fact that China is about to kill 500,000 dogs ,,,not marauding bands of nightmarish hounds from hell but perfectly nice house pets owned by its citizens. If this is how they celebrate The Year of the Dog, lets hope there isn't anything coming up called The Year of the Jew.
Because of 16 rabies related human deaths in the last 8 months, the plan is to pretty much wipe out the healthy good natured dog population. Only 3% of Chinese dogs have been given rabies vaccines. But of the 50,000 dogs that were pointlessly slaughtered last week, 4000 of them had been inoculated. And were killed anyway.
The LA Times article I read described people being forced to hang their own dogs or stand and watch while government assholes grab them off their leashes and beat them to death.
As a person who just wrote (another) book about dogs, as well as one who spends a good portion of every day finding them inspiring in a hilarious way and just generally thinking about how much I like them, this stuff makes me so angry and fills me with such seething hatred that I am going to stay out of Moonshadows restaurant for the foreseeable future, for fear of ending the evening accusing the Malibu police of being the pawns of The Red Chinese.
In conclusion it doesn't seem like too much to ask for the dog owners among us to pick up the cheap piece of crap that we are about to buy at Target and see where it was made. And if it was made in China, maybe just forego that seventy five cent sweat shirt and spend the extra dollar to get the one right next to it... oh shoot, those are made by nine year old Malaysian slave girls.
How about just starting by not buying anything from China. I'm not going to. And I don't think you should either.
