Worrying About all this Peace

Bush gave a speech to the U.N. today in which he said "My country desires peace." Then later in the very same day Iran's President Ahmadinejad gave a speech in which he said that his nuclear program is "for peaceful purposes only." I was thinking about those two things, plus the way I keep hearing that "Islam is a religion of peace,"and "Christianity is a religion of peace" and I started to wonder:: What is it about all this peace that is making me so nervous?

Did the definition of peace make some kind of left turn since I last looked? Kind of the way that I now accept that "bad" means "good,","hot" means "cool". and "nasty" means "sexy." Last time I checked "Peace" meant "the absence of violence or other disturbances." But that can't be what any of these guys are talking about. At least that's not what their actions have shown me over time. So either the word "Peace" has a new hip Gangsta meaning that I need to start to get used to or else they're all referencing something from an "In and Out" list I must have missed. Something along the lines of "fifty is the new forty" and "forty is the new thirty" and "black is the new red." How else to explain the way that Peace is now used interchangeably with its alternative. Maybe peace is the new war.
