The Terrible Twos: The Tea Party Throws a Tantrum

Posted: 04/ 8/11 02:06 PM ET

The Tea Party was born in 2009. It is now two years old.

All parents know what the "terrible twos" look like. What's happening now on Capitol Hill is unmistakable: the Tea Party is throwing a tantrum.

When they first arrived in Washington, the Tea Party freshman class was fawned over and adored. They were given seats on powerful committees. They took special classes about the Constitution and spent a lot of time talking about what they thought was in it. They held votes to stick it to their least favorite things -- women's health care, environmental protection, and public radio.

But then something happened. The Tea Party discovered it couldn't get everything it wanted.

Passing a budget is a task that requires a certain amount of compromise and sacrifice. As such, it is a task that two-year-olds are not particularly well suited to perform. Grown-up Congresses pass budgets all the time -- they bicker and they argue, but in the end they realize that the functioning of the United States government and the well-being of their constituents is worth a little political sacrifice.

But not so for the Tea Party. They wanted tens of billions of dollars in budget cuts. They got tens of billions of dollars in budget cuts. They wanted to slash funding for preschools and college scholarships and foreign aid. But that wasn't enough. What they really wanted -- really, really, really wanted -- was to defund Planned Parenthood and keep the Environmental Protection Agency from protecting the environment. And when they didn't get those things, they started screaming.

Toddlers don't recognize that the world does not begin and end with their demands. They do not realize that the matches they're playing with could hurt someone.

A government shutdown -- which is what the Tea Party wants if Democrats and moderate Republicans won't give in to their every demand -- is a destructive thing. The last one, which lasted for three weeks, cost taxpayers $1.25 billion . If the government shuts down tomorrow morning, 800,000 government workers will go on leave without pay. Small businesses that rely on the government for business will stop bringing in income. U.S. troops fighting abroad would have their pay delayed . The U.S. would stop issuing passports. The D.C. city government would all but grind to a halt.

But the collateral cost of their tantrum doesn't seem to bother the Tea Party. They're too busy crying and screaming to realize that they're hurting people, and might eventually hurt themselves.

Good parents don't try to reason with a toddler holding a box of matches -- they take the matches away. House Speaker John Boehner has so far been overly indulgent of his young caucus. Now is the time for him to teach them what it takes to be grown-ups in government.

Michael, your analogy was succinct and to the point. I'm sorry I did not see this earlier.

I'm relieved we did not have to deal with an actual shutdown, but if that had been the outcome, the toddlers would have scored the temporary victory akin to the kid getting the candy they wanted in the grocery store.

Boehner needs to start showing some tough love and employing more discipline (aka leadership). These tantrums need to cease now!

Oh they realize that they are hurting people, but the problem is, they don't care. To be right to them trumps everything, and they are only right in their feeble little minds.

Your argument does not make much sense to me (And is not very persuasive). First, you say, "They wanted to slash funding for...foreign aid." YEAH! What is wrong with that? Second, we have a country that is spending over a trillion dollars a year more than it is taking in via taxes. At some point, budget cuts will have to be made. A country can not continue on this path because bankruptcy can and will happen (See all old empires like the British and the Soviets). Finally, the corporations will never allow a government shutdown to occur. Most Tea Partiers (Rand Paul and many House members are the exception) are pro-corporate. They are hypocrites because if you REALLY want to cut the budget, you have to go after energy subsidies, the defense industry, social security, health care and the beneficial tax policy for the banks. This is destroying this country (Minus Social Security which is actually paid for). Cutting Planned Parenthood, PBS and other regulatory agencies are like putting a finger to stop a leak that is 20 feet wide. The corporations that really run this nation will NEVER allow a government shutdown to take place because many of them (Looking at you GE, McDonnell Douglas, Fluor, etc.) need government cash to survive. That is why I was never worried about this issue. As I have said many times before, this is one nation, under the dollar and authoritarianism for all.

Adults understand they have to pay for what they spend, we also realize that civilized societies take care of infrastructure and research to stay ahead be competitive and provide basic saftey nets and rehabilitaion to the needy. Repeal the tax cuts for the wealthy, they should have never been rolled out to begin with. Cut our bloated private contractor driven defence budget. You pretty much nailed it. So did this author when he likened them to toddlers. Also much like toddlers they don't seem to take a long view. They want to slash and burn to see results by next election cycle but are oblivious to that being unrealistic and the harm to recovery.

the debt ceiling vote is coming up and we'll see this exact same thing happen again. what will it be this time? my guess is lowering the corporate tax rate to 25%, and they'll get it. you know they will and you will come back here to complain again, i promise. start the pushback NOW and demand equal cuts from the Defense budget. Come on people, focus.

Unfortunately they were the motivated participants in the last election and we will all pay for it.
Worse yet, to try to convince them that they have shot themselves in the foot is hopeless for the conservative base reacts with anxiety and fear to uncertainty and will always look to and support their masters of the universe without question....

It's my impression, we must recognize that they are largely uninformed by choice and don't operate with reason or clarity. Scary stuff....

Right. Leave it up to the crybaby in chief to teach them.

I think it's counterproductive, demeaning and untrue to refer to the Tea Partiers as "two year olds." They seem to be serious and seriously misguided people whose policy ideas are made to order to continue destroying our society, economy and middle class, put more and more power into the hands of the plutocrats and continue the acceleration of the gross inequality of money and opportunity which have resulted from the failure of all Republican beliefs and governing philosophies. I think we have to treat the Tea Partiers as serious people. Unfortunately, I think their beliefs are not fact-based, so mere facts will never persuade them that they are wrong. All we can do is defeat them at the polls and keep them from any positions of authority as much as possible.

Sorry - it's pretty hard to take a bunch of flabby pastey 60 somethings in tea-bag festooned Paul Revere attire seriously even if they remained mute - and unfortunately suspicions of their cognitive state are confirmed the minute they speak up. Two years olds are aware of "self" - but almost totally unaware of the concept of others to be considered - thus the ongoing NO and constant tantrums of the age group - so the comparison is valid and not unreasonable. There seems among tea baggers no ability at all to recognize that there are others besides themselves or that the world doesn't turn soley for their benefit. I've met fairly average ninth graders with better grounding in history and economics than any of their candidates or elected representatives. Rather than re-seat ignorance at the table I would suggest - people get out and vote for saner candidates - and since reason is lost on both toddlers and tea partiers - you may as well get in some laughs.

If the TP were serious rather than a front for the Koch Boys and Dick Armey they would demand a 50% reduction in defense spending. Instead they are so tupid that they want the governemtn to stay out of their Medicare. Republicans feed on the brains of the dumbest people on the planet.

Very astute. Were you aware there are actual physical differences in the brains of conservatives and liberals?

The people are winning because of the Tea Party. The problem with the DemocrAts is that they were elected in 2006 to get us out of Iraq and change government, but they failed. Why? Because they compromised too much. Instead of being a good minority party like the Tea Party is now, the Democrats continued to roll over and let things go as they had been six years prior.

Debate and arguing is healthy. It's good for our Republic. Today Obama has stated he will come up with a plan to tackle the deficits. This is a win for the people and the conservative movement because of this "childness" Tea Party.

As far as your argument that if you cannot pass a budget then you are not an adult; doesn't that mean the Democrats are children too? For they hadn't passed a budget in two years!
01:57 PM on 04/10/2011
Two years? On what planet? We wouldn't have government operating if it went two years without a budget. Budgets are passed annually. One was passed in 2008 and 2009.

The reason the 2010 budget hadn't been passed yet is the Senate Republicans filibustered everything to placate the tea party.

Take those guys and multiply it by 2 and you get the state legislatures. Easier to control, easier to be out on the edge and easier to get your way. The big government social agenda of the far right is an exercise in hypocricy. Take my state for instance. Wanting government to dictate to a doctor and their patient about anything remotely connected with reproduction including birth control, but then screaming about the use of big government (socialism) and loss of freedom over public smokiing bans. What's the first two things states do when faced with a budget shortfall? Cut spending on social programs and cut taxes to raise less revenue. Here's a helpfull hint for those working couples who are in debt, take the lead from our governments: cut out sources of income (like one of the jobs) while cutting back on expenses by needing one less car to get to work. Perfect way to help create jobs.

"Good parents don't try to reason with a toddler holding a box of matches -- they take the matches away"

True.
Then spank their little butts (2 is perfectly acceptable) so the youngster will think twice about even TOUCHING matches again.
For those gasping in horror at the idea of spanking the little darlings...teapartiers or toddlers...the next time they could burn the house down while no one is watching.
