The Washington Post has approached The Atlantic's Derek Thompson to be the next editor of Wonkblog, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Thompson has not yet accepted the job, but The Post's recruitment of a replacement suggests that Wonkblog editor Ezra Klein is leaving the paper.

Thompson declined to comment. Klein also declined to comment.

A Post spokeswoman told HuffPost that "Ezra is still at the paper."

Klein's status at the Post has been up in the air for the past several weeks. The Huffington Post first reported last month that Klein, one of the paper's star writers, was speaking to outside investors about starting a new media venture and could potentially leave the paper.

The New York Times reported last week that the Post's brass turned down Klein's "eight-figure" proposal to launch a new site. Still, it wasn't clear whether Klein would leave, a topic that has been the talk of the newsroom.

Thompson, a senior editor at The Atlantic, oversees the site's Business Channel. He has previously written for Slate, BusinessWeek and the Daily Beast.
