When Congress comes back for the post-election session, there will be little time and many competing priorities. One that must be addressed is child nutrition. Child nutrition may not have the political cachet of some of the big ticket items on Congress' plate, but here are seven reasons why this bill should be a top priority for congressional action.

1. Better School Lunches! The child nutrition bill would improve the nutritional quality of school lunches. It provides money for schools to buy more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It also would ensure that school funds aren't siphoned off to pay for a la carte junk foods, like pizza or French fries. Schools would get access to more model menus, healthy recipes that kids like in other schools, and additional advice and support to serve healthy meals.

2. Junk Food Out of Schools. A provision in the bill would get junk foods and sugary drinks out of school vending machines and elsewhere on school grounds. It would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to bring its 30-year-old nutrition standards into the 21st century. (Those standards now prohibit calorie-free seltzer water, yet allow candy bars!)

3. Families Rely on School Meals. Given the current economic situation, more families rely on the child nutrition programs to feed their families than ever before. The bill would expand access and reduce barriers to the child nutrition programs.

4. A Historic Investment in Kids. The bill is fully paid for and won't add to the deficit, even though at $4.5 billion of additional funding over the next 10 years, it is the largest new investment in child nutrition programs in decades. Some members of the House previously had concerns about the bill because it is paid for, in part, by ending a temporary increase in food stamp benefits five months early. However, a recent public commitment by President Obama to restore this benefit following the passage of the bill should alleviate those concerns and allow House members to vote for the bill.

5. Good for Farms and Farmers. The child nutrition bill expands farm-to-school programs, strengthening the traditional links between the school cafeteria and America's family farms. This will encourage farmers to grow -- and schools to buy -- a greater variety of locally produced healthy fruits and vegetables.

6. Democrats and Republicans Agree on It! Though partisanship and politics have been thick in D.C., the Senate worked together on a bipartisan bill that it passed unanimously. You rarely see that on such major pieces of legislation.

7. Health Advocates and Industry Support It! The bill has strong support from over 1,100 national, state and local health, education and anti-hunger groups, as well as unions and the food, beverage, dairy and supermarket industries. Supporters include the American Beverage Association, Mars, SEIU, AFSCME, National PTA, National Education Association, American Heart Association, Feeding America and Share Our Strength.

The USDA is about as credible as your FDA, the same entity for example, that prioritizes the sterilization of milk over the resistance of the person drinking it. Most of the world, never mind the 50 million Americans, cannot or should not be drinking milk, yet that does not ease the USDA's stance that milk is an “essential” food, citing calcium as it's motivation. (romaine lettuce has same if not more calcium than a glass of milk) $64 million in campaign contributions and $139 million lobbying Congress is why milk gets the nod.

The lengths “Big Food” goes to protect it’s globalized supply chain and tilt “Organic” legislation stretch far. Whether it’s feigned contempt for Jamie Oliver’s school lunch initiative or milk, it only underlines the treachery of these corporate monopolists (General Mills, Monsanto, Cargill, Tyson Foods, Archer Daniels Midland etc.) through their collective sensitivity to any changes to health messaging e.g. “The Food Pyramid”, however faint it’s reach.

Any information or movement that may dissuade you and your kids from shoveling down as much fatty meat, dairy, refined sugars and all the white starches your system can endure, is off message to “Big Food”. They hold a self-evident, colluded influence over the very agencies that claim to be protecting YOU from THEM.

my daughter brings her lunch to school every day. however, the high school she goes to does have some healthy choices.

i feel for the kids whose parents either don't have the resources, knowledge or just aren't paying attention. this may be some of the reason american kids are losing ground in the world. nutrition does play a part in learning.

Half the time I take my daughter her lunch because she says the school lunches are so bad. She's said she's even gotten spoiled food many times.

Love what the Republicans have done with our country!

Ever wonder why your child's school lunch menu can offer 4 types of cow's milk (including chocolate - which can have more sugar and calories than candy) but can't offer water as a beverage choice? It's because the federal government sees "no nutritional value in water" and won't reimburse your school lunch district if it's offered on the menu. Hmmm...wonder what industry got that on the menu?

Anyway, it's so strange. America's children have never been fatter or sicker and we can't seem to figure out why.

They have fast food company pizza and hamburgers for a lunch option at my daughters school. When I was a kid neither of these would ever have been allowed in the building, much less offered! It was called Junk Food and we were only supposed to eat it once in a while, if ever.

Dear Bleubunny,

So very true! Thankfully last year our now 11 year old begged me to stop ordering him the school lunch twice a week because "it's just disgusting." He now packs a lunch every day and it's usually leftovers.

It always makes me chuckle when the food and beverage industry rants and raves about food "choices" in our schools. 'Cuz we choose not to eat their junk. Fast food, junk food holds zero nutritional value and sadly it is "shoved down the throats" of our children especially in the poorer communities.

Few days ago feed four hungry 11 year olds: pasta with red sauce, a sliced fresh cucumber and a glass of water. How much does a happy meal cost?. Think my meal for four totaled maybe $7.00.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. - Ben Franklin

"Hmmm...wonder what industry got that on the menu?"

Starts with a "D". And the FDA is in bed with the major food suppliers, all colluding to poison your children, physically and psychologically (later in life). And yeah, it does affect learning ability (hence one reason Americans are by far the stupidest population on the planet). The question is, why haven't Americans protested this subjugation of their children's health, from the government-industry collusion to create a nation of dumb, obese people that will likely have shorter lifespans than the generation that preceded them? Why are they not protesting the Republicans who are against the school nutrition bill? If Americans won't stand up to defend their own children against their own government..... then game over. You might as well just brand your children at birth, with the company that owns them.

I look back on what I ate for the first few years of elementary school with genuine horror. The main ingredient of the listless grey chicken patty was definitely not chicken.
To get this passed, I think that all members of congress should have to eat this crap for a month.

I hope this passes. I had the worst school lunch programs growing up. In my elementary school they wouldn't even defrost our juices. Then in high school I was happy to eat fries, cookies, and snapples everyday, but I gained 20 lbs I've been trying to lose for 6 years : /

Does anyone ever come up with a solution that does NOT include a government program
07:30 AM on 11/29/2010
Yes, but most can't afford it. Why do you pay taxes to your government if you don't want them to do anything positive with it?
10:46 PM on 12/02/2010
Yes lets wave a magic wand and make poverty disappear! There already is a school lunch program, for many many kids its the only real meal they will see that day. School lunches are already tax payer subsidised, yes we all contribute some of our tax dollars so underprivileged children can get a decent meal on school days at least. Its what you do in civilized society. Now I understand that many of today's republicans have tiny selfish shrivelled souls but I cannot fathom why ANYONE would have a problem with making sure kids can have access to a nutritious meal and making sure that the school lunches that tax payers are and have always subsidised are nutritionally balanced.

So pass the bill and it will make kids healthier. if its that easy why didn't they do it earlier?

Thank you Judith. I worked for many years with school nutrition and health. I belong to a group that always has the task of either calling him or Kay Bailey H. I have received the weirdest answers from those two.
Can you believe in some cities/towns here in Texas they still deep fry stuff!

growing up I ate all the junk food available. Shark Bites, Gushers, Fruit Roll Ups, Doritos, Soda, Ice cream, Candy Bars. You name it I had it and I think I had it on a daily basis. But what I did have everyday, god bless her, was my mother's cooking. She would cook a traditional Chinese Feast every night. Rice, Meat and Veggies plate, Another plate of veggies, simple soup with tofu, and some side dishes of preserved meats or veggies. ALMOST EVERY NIGHT. Plus she made me drink a lot of Herbal Tonics she would stink up the whole house with. It's only now that I'm older that I see that stuff probably saved me and prevented me from being obese and unhealthy. I was asthmatic and had a lot of allergies growing up. I felt like a walking time bomb. Now I don't have asthma, maybe slight problem in the spring but nothing major. I'm less allergic to anything and I feel healthy. My Nutrition has dramatically improved over the years and I feel even more healthy.Good Food Heals and Nourishes your body. Pass the bill! Didn't they say in 2020 1 in 5 Americans will have Diabetes? That's Insane

Nothing wrong with meat, you just don't like it

The present regs on school lunches try to reduce fat. What kind of fat is my worry. Cheap meats where the animals are fed waste/industrial recycled oil are pushed on our kids who will end up looking as fat as those 5 week old chickens. Their body fat will also progressively turn white and all the places these fats accumulate will have problems based on the individuals genetic or epigenetic weaknesses. Diabetes (insulin resistance) though is universal in these poisoned people.
The food industry will write the regs for any new bill to prevent any real change. I am not very hopeful for change from the corrupted federal establishment. Local efforts may be more effective for a few children but we will probably lose another generation before people demand better.
10:58 AM on 11/16/2010
Very simple concept: You can either pay more for healthy food now, or pay for exorbitant medications later in life. Trust me, eating healthier now will be cheaper in the end.

They won't pass it because someone will bring up the fact that illegal immigrants are attending public schools, thus we can't spend millions of dollars feeding them.

Beck will light the politov cocktail, Palin or Newt will heave it at the people, and the Tea Partiers will riot in the streets over it. This is what will happen for the next two years to good bills that benefit everyone.

Unfortunately, I also see this, or something very simular, happening....OR, our great & caring congress will just ignore doing anything for the 'commoners' as usual :(

Ah, but this is where Sarah Palin comes in (holding a huge plate of French fries) screeching freedom and liberty for all! "Forcing" our kids to eat healthy school lunches and banning candy from vending machines is only part of the Obama Socialist regime to reduce (or is that refudiate) our freedom and liberty! Oh yes, you are right, and pandering to those illegal immigrants (hoodlums all). Ugh! You'd think even those Tea Baggers would want their kids to eat well at least once a day.
