Nellie McKay Sings Out For Troy Davis

Posted: 09/16/11 05:14 PM ET

Singer, songwriter, actress, activist and all around delightful talent Nellie McKay has just released a haunting video to bring attention to the case of Troy Davis. Davis is on death row and faces his fourth execution date on September 21, despite a mountain of evidence that certainly raises enough reasonable doubt to stop the ultimate, irrevocable act of capital punishment.

His case has roused attention around the world, with calls of clemency for Troy Davis from Pope Benedict, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former FBI head William Sessions, former President Jimmy Carter and many others. Now McKay is adding her lovely voice with a video that's filled with facts and information along with her typically marvelous performance.

At the end of the video, McKay urges people to take action by going to the websites Color Of Change and Amnesty USA.

Free this innocent man NOW! What is the hold-up? The facts now speak far greater than the lies!

The affidavits of recantation are available on the internet. They are very interesting.
The "eyewitnesses" were all unreliable at the time: scared teenagers, people on parole---over a decade ago they claimed they were lying the first time. Nine people have given affidavits saying Red Coles was the killer. (Red Coles is one of the "eyewitnesses" who has NOT recanted.) People, this case is a HOT MESS! Neither of these men were exactly altar boys at the time, and I do support the death penalty, but only for those who are GUILTY! It's too late probably to sign any more petitions and I don't know that the petitions have done any good anyway. Living in Georgia, I fear the outcry has just hardened the hearts of the Parole Board. They meet tomorrow. Lord, I hope Georgia does not put this man to death. I really believe Red Coles did it, and I think putting an innocent man to death is going to screw the "justice" system even more royally.

Thanks to Nellie McKay for this video protest, and to Michael Giltz for sharing it! Stop the execution of Troy Davis! Abolish the death penalty! For answers to why and how to end the death penalty in the United States, visit these links from Amnesty International (http://bit.ly/nsyhV2) and The Nation magazine (http://on.fb.me/q3YGIm). It's worth noting that the European Union prohibits the use of capital punishment, and that the United Nations adopted non-binding resolutions calling for a global moratorium on executions, with a view to eventual abolition (Wikipedia, http://bit.ly/oSPEdr).

Boo Wahh, another softhearted protester singing a song to stop his guilty vedict. He has been on death row FOUR times. He was found guilty FOUR times. Doesn't that say something to you. "If it quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, and smells like a duck. And if you eat it, it tastes like a duck. Guess what? It's a duck. The people protesting against him recieving his Just sentence should be ashamed of themselves, for defending a killer. And the fact that one of his vics. says she forgives him, sickens me. She wants her own movie on Oprah's OWN TV network or maybe Lifetime.

Capital punishment is not working. There is an abundance of evidence that proves this fact. The death penalty--both in the U.S. and around the world--is discriminatory and is used disproportionately against the poor, minorities and members of racial, ethnic and religious communities. And since humans are fallible, the risk of executing the innocent can never be eliminated. (Details available at http://bit.ly/pQLXAs.).

Listen---The Pope, Desmond TuTu, Jimmy Carter, The FBI, and other very smart & understanding people know without a doubt he did not do the crime as does several of the jurors and one of those jurors went as far to say that if they had known the proper information then, conviction would not have occurred. You are a very ignorant person. What do you base your guilty plea on?

Clemency for Troy Davis. We must not let an innocent man die or spend another day in prison.
