Lies, Damned Lies, and John McCain Claiming He Was Never a Maverick

What's Your Reaction:

You've heard about conservatives rewriting history, right? Well, how about one conservative, John McCain, trying to rewrite his own history by denying he was ever a maverick?

Sounds crazy, eh? I mean, the guy must be losing his mind, or must have lost a good chunk of it already. Either that, or he's so stupid or arrogant as to think that no one actually remembers all that maverick talk during the '08 campaign.

Whatever the case, there he was, telling Newsweek's David Margolick:

I never considered myself a maverick.

Uhhhhhh... what?

I mean, of course he did. All the time. The whole mavericky thing was a centerpiece of his campaign, and he and Palin reveled in it, pushing it at every opportunity. Right? Surely that wasn't some horrible dream that we all dreamed together?

At Politico, Ben Smith helpfully posts a McCain-Palin '08 campaign ad that, well, let's just say it pretty much proves, as if we really needed any further proof, that McCain is full of shit. You can watch the ad below. (It was originally uploaded by johnmccain.com and -- who knows? -- may be taken down if this new non-maverick thing takes holds as campaign rhetoric, what with McCain lurching to the right to try to fend off an extremist conservative primary challenge from J.D. Hayworth, who is calling himself, contra McCain, "The Consistent Conservative.")

(UPDATE: Smith also posts a pre-election SNL clip featuring McCain joking about just how mavericky he is. Meanwhile, Hayworth, predictably enough, is hitting back, but it's McCain's fault for giving him such a huge opening by saying such a stupid thing.)

Or just go to YouTube and do a search for "John McCain maverick." Look what comes up first (as of right now). An even more helpful montage from TPM. You can watch that below, too.

The point: John McCain is either senile or a liar. Or maybe both. (Or maybe he's just really, really desperate and willing to do/say anything contra Hayworth. Like appear at campaign rallies and do interviews with Palin, who just makes McCain look awkward and uncomfortable with her mindless blather.)

(Of course, he was always more faux maverick than genuine maverick, and he used the maverick/independent label for self-promotional political purposes. While he has shown himself to be somewhat mavericky on some issues, like torture and immigration, he's generally been a solid conservative and loyal Republican throughout his political career.)

Here in Arizona we are use to John McCain's lies. We feel that John McCain is not only the biggest liar in the U S Senate, but the dirtiest, underhanded, most out of touch, warmonger in Washington.

I find McCain offensive in every way.

We John McCain said he never told anyone he was the Maverick or did he tell anyone his name was John, that is a lie, we don't know what's going on with John McCain, he just stood there and let Palin call him a Tea Bagger and she even called him old, that day he seemed needy we really felt sorry for him and we don't even care for him. Palin was dumping on McCain and he didn't even know it, McCain and Palin went on FOX a few days later and she dumped on him again, he should have stuck with Scott Brown.

McCain's right. He was NEVER a maverick. He is a Pinto. The logistics of rear-ending oneself followed by a huge explosion and flames, however, must be staggering. Although I suppose it could be accomplished if one lacked a spine.

Another "better idea" from the folks at FORD (Flip-Flop or Revise Daily).

He who is not sure of his memory should not undertake the trade of lying.

The problem with this article is calling John McCain a conservative. He is not, to be accurate, call him what he really is = progressive republican. I am a conservative and can honestly say, the poor fella sound like a complete fool during the campaign.

This maverick crap originated with the moronic media who fell in love with McCain and made him a hero but now it no longer suits him to be identified as a maverick so like the liar he is he dumps it.

McCain has always been and always will be about one thing...Himself. He has turned himself into a national joke because of his blind and blatant ambition. Even with the current crop of politicians in DC who have managed to lower the bar even further than usual, McCain is a standout when it comes to incompetence, lying and taking advantage of his office and position.

I especially liked the first video' Original Mavericks' where at the very end it says 'approved by John McCain'. Of course he was Maverick-y and he gull-darned approved of it. Yup yup.

"willing to do/say anything contra Hayworth" ?? Doubtful. Last person we need in the Senate is someone like Hayworth with flawed ethics and McCain knows it but he ALSO is the clear front runner because he always makes decisions with the voice of the people in his ear. No way mccain loses here. JD is not the new black...

I guess you about said it all, "He's full of Shit" .
12:13 AM on 04/07/2010
Ok, so we wait for his press release...but in the meanwhile, just listen to Mr. Moral JD Hayworth...as if that guy has ANY room to poke fun at McCain! JD has enough issues of his own to last a lifetime. McCain will win, he is the best candidate, maverick or not...

Hey, I live in AZ and a check of Sens McCain and Kyl Web site does not show that either of them has worked on anything to benefit the citizens of AZ many of whom are struggling. There is also nothing to benefit the state of AZ, which has many problems. McCain and Kyl live in their own bubble...both Bozos need to be given the boot. McCain's wealth precludes him from what is reality in real Americans lives.
Sarah Failin use to comment about their being “the mavericks” during their 2008 campaign and “only dead fish go with the flow”. Hmmmm...

Both McCain and Kyl have said they will vote "no" on ANYTHING that is put forth by the Administration, even if those things would be helpful to the people of the state of Arizona. Isn't this what is known as "cutting off your nose to spite your face"? They don't care about the voters, the ones who put them in office. They care about their titles, their money and the life style they enjoy as senators.

Neither one should be in office and McCain is definitely the poster boy for term limits in Congress.

There's no doubt that John McCain is not only the biggest warmonger in the U S Senate, but the biggest LIAR as well

There's quite a bit of competition for the title of biggest liar in the US Senate but John does rank somewhere at the top of the list.
