Michael Kugelman is the South Asia associate at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, where he is responsible for research, programming, and publications on the region. His most recent projects have focused on Pakistan's demographics, U.S. aid effectiveness in Pakistan, and India's security challenges. His work has appeared in Foreign Policy, World Politics Review, Dawn, Express Tribune, Times of India, and Asia Times Online. Mr. Kugelman holds an MA in international relations from The Fletcher School at Tufts University and a BA from American University’s School of International Service.

What a 12-hour Twitter Ban Says About Pakistan's Fractured Society

Last Sunday, after Pakistan's government briefly blocked access to Twitter, the outcry in the country was instantaneous.

Ironically, most of this outrage was expressed on Twitter itself. Users in Pakistan promptly discovered alternate means of accessing the micro-blogging site, created the hashtag #TwitterBan, and angrily tweeted away.
