The Darkest of All Lies

Posted: 10/10/2012 2:55 pm

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, Mitt Romney told a crowd of supporters in Van Meter, Iowa a story about an interesting Christmas party he and his wife attended in San Diego several years ago. According to his story, presidential candidate Romney had the chance opportunity to meet and even the time to "learn about" a very special former U.S. Navy SEAL. Romney did not mention the man's name during the campaign event in Van Meter, but the Romney campaign later confirmed the former Navy SEAL was Glen Doherty, 42, one of the four Americans killed in the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, along with the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens. The Romney campaign said that Romney met Doherty in 2009 or 2010, and that Romney did not know for sure that the man he met at the Christmas party a few years ago was the same man killed in Libya until a neighbor contacted Romney to inform him in the past few days.

I had the extreme good fortune, honor and privilege to work alongside Glen for years as a longtime member of the Advisory Board of the four-time, Nobel Peace Prize-nominated, civil rights charitable organization I founded and currently serve as president of called the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). We currently are assisting over 30,000 American military personnel fighting against Christian fundamentalist religious extremism in our own armed forces. Glen selflessly served as a passionate, 'round-the-clock' supporter of MRFF based on his fervent belief in its mission to protect the secular nature of the U.S. Military and the imperative this secular nature has to our national security. Separation of church and state in the United States military was not a trivial matter for Glen. It was his mantra.

Based upon our profound, mutual working experiences with MRFF, I'm truly fascinated about what Mitt Romney actually "learned about him". During his chance meeting with Glen at that Christmas party a few years ago, did candidate Romney learn about his close personal and professional relationship with MRFF? Other fascinating learning opportunities for Mr. Romney regarding Glen's deep support of and belief in MRFF and what we stand for may have revealed to him some very "uncomfortable" facts about the life of this true American Hero. Did Romney learn that Glen, as a trusted and close board advisor to me and MRFF, fully supported:

- exposing and demanding the removal of New Testament biblical citations on defense contractor Trijicon's ACOG rifle scopes issued on almost a million military weapons;

- repeatedly exposing and then demanding the end to the practice of U.S. Military officers requiring participation of subordinates in mandatory religious events;

- ending the invitation of anti-Muslim and Islamophobic speakers to U.S. Military training events;

- exposing the practice of encouraging our service members to proselytize Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan and numerous other attempts to transform U.S. service members into "government paid missionaries" and the U.S. Military into the most powerfully weaponized and lethal, sectarian religious mission in the history of mankind;

- ending the practice of gauging a service member's "fitness" to serve in the U.S. Military on 'Spiritual Factors';

- exposing and ending efforts of virulent proselytizing and retribution at the U.S. Military Academies;-exposing and achieving removal of "End Times" religious content in required training curriculum for U.S. Air Force nuclear missile launch officers;

- repeatedly intervening on behalf of tens of thousands of service members standing up for their 1st Amendment civil right to refuse to observe forced prayers in mandatory U.S. Military ceremonies;-exposing and forcing removal of a mandatory chapel attendance policy within the U. S. Air Force Squadron Officer School;

-exposing and forcing removal of Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC) training program advocating waging 'Total War', including the use of nuclear weapons, against innocent Muslim civilian populations; and finally (in an issue discussed extensively between Glen and myself only a few days before Glen retuned to Libya)

- providing the driving force and impetus to the recent adoption on August 7, 2012 of 'Government Neutrality Regarding Religion' Standards in Air Force Instruction 1-1, Section 2.11 by the United States Air Force Chief of Staff thus creating for the very first time under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) the possibility of criminal prosecution for failing to maintain religious neutrality within the U.S. Air Force.

I would actually be impressed if candidate Romney had taken the opportunity to "learn" about the importance in which Glen held even one of these accomplishments. I would hazard a guess that candidate Romney would have gladly and conveniently relegated learning any of these facts about Glen to the 'memory hole' had he actually taken the time to truly learn about who Glen Doherty was or what he stood for.

As informed citizens of the United States, we are all too aware of the rampant grandiose hyperbole generated as a result of our political campaigns. This absolutely disgusting, opportunistic travesty however was so much more, and so much lower, than the usual political 'pablum' that courses through our normal campaign emissions. This "performance" was simply naked and shameful exploitation of the life and memory of an actual American Hero. Romney did not "know" Glen. His insinuation that he somehow had a connection to Glen is disingenuous at best and a naked lie at worst. It is bold and bald untruthfulness. As Alfred Tennyson said, "A lie that is half truth is the darkest of all lies." A timely and heartfelt apology is truly in order here.

Mikey Weinstein also wrote a book, No Snowflake in an Avalanche I would recommend people who are not familiar with his work read. He gives a history of his fight to keep the military secular. One way to look at it is a military that is based on fundamental religious practices would also be a military that would be able to run a coup on this country to put theocracy into place.

I believe Mikey is using the passing of Glen Doherty to trumpet HIS cause. Going on & on about religious freedom, when in fact his work includes not letting Christians (start by stop labeling all as "fundamentalists") practice their faith. How about supporting ANYONE'S right to practice, period, not just non-Christians.

You know nothing about his work. Prosyletizing is not for the Armed Forces. They can practice all they want, they do not have the right to shove it down others' throats.

Your comment shows you know nothing about what Mikey does and nothing about the history in the military of religious persecution by certain fundies. Come back when you have read the history because you don't have a clue

an eye opening piece. didnt know what fundamentist christianity was so aggressively promoted in the military. I like how glen tried to expose the college of forces that wd try to support or encourage the use of nukes. to me the implication in the context of the fundamentalism just noted is that certain people wd love to be the tools of the end of the world. glad there was some sanity in these corridors of power.

Thanks Mikey for reminding us of what a great guy Glen was and how important religious freedom for everyone was to him.

Thank you for this enlightening and informative blog. I was not aware of MRFF. What incredibly important work that is. Again, thank you for shedding more light on this Romney matter of politicizing a fallen hero for political and personal gain.

Despicable and truly frightening how very easy it was for him to do so.

I have read several articles in which they mention former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, and that he worked for security. Was the Security firm Academi?
06:29 PM on 10/10/2012
I heard that story on NPR's Morning Edition, today, and all I could think was "How DARE he!" Romney managed to set my teeth on edge and make my stomach churn, both at the same time, while indignation boiled out of my ears...

What are the chances this article will make the "Front Page" of this site? Any bets?

I vote for main page - feature article - for this post at least four hours! Fav if you agree!

I learned about Mrs. Doherty requesting Romney cease and desist mentioning her son by name in his campaign speeches on Rachel Maddow's show last night. More power to her. I truly hope he and his campaign managers have learned a lesson: ask the bereaved families first if you can talk about their fallen military relative before you go around shooting off at the mouth.

So somewhere this is making national news...but it needs to be broadcast to a wider conservative audience. Do you know if it's been broadcast yet on Faux News (Noise)?

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't known about MRFF until just now.

I'm not just proud of what you stand for, Mr. Weinstein, but also relieved that someone with a military background has reminded us all that the U.S.'s military force IS secular and should remain such. I'm hopeful your opinion's gravitas on this is accepted and respected by nay-sayers.

I'm also glad you're calling out Mr. Romney on his blatant manipulation of the American public with his claim that he "knew" Glen Doherty. I smelled a rat when I heard that part of his speech and you've just validated my instinct. Meeting a person once does not mean you know them. Using that encounter in the context in which it's been posed is both shameless and astonishingly disrespectful to a valued member of our military forces who died under horrible circumstances.

Thank you from the granddaughter of a USAF Lieutenant Colonel and the niece of a USAF Major....your service and commitment to this country are so appreciated, in more ways than one.

The Romney campaign is about having everyone jump on the yellow brick road and come to Oz. There everything is perfect, it smells sweet and with velvet all around. Once there we will all find out there is just a snake oil salesman behind the curtain. Hard to believe how many people are buying into it.

Mikey, groups like you are now the media. The old media is run by advertisers as there are just not enough dollars to keep everyone afloat. FOX, MSNBC, CNBC...I just don't believe anything anymore, except those where advertising is out of the equation.

Further, I see that Doherty's mother has instructed the Romney campaign to desist in using her son as a campaign prop, since "I don't trust Romney. He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda," she told WHDH. "It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama.”

Doherty similarly decried the politicization of her son's death in an interview with the Boston Herald last month.

Thanks for this article. I intend to learn from the links, since I didn't know some of these things were going on, like the Air Force End Times indoctrination. Truly odious!

Just for the heck of it: The National Review is still trumpeting the news that MR has met with.... bla bla bla.... It's not that important, but it shows how important the issue was for the wingnuts

Why has not this blatant partisan, religious interference into the US military been exposed before?

It's been going on for quite some time. Besides Mikey's tireless work, other organizations such as Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, the ACLU, and also progressive faith allies such as the Interfaith Alliance and CA Church IMPACT have all been front and center on this critical issue. In the media there is less attention. Rachel Maddow has done quite a lot and so have other liberal commentators, but overall nobody wants to touch it for fear of the pushback from religious extremists. It's up to all of us to get the word OUT about this quest for domination of our military by a small but extremely powerful cult of faux Christians.

Romney can't remember what he said last week. I do not believe he remembers a man he met 3 years ago in a chance encounter at a neighbor's party. To use this man as a campaign tool, on such a casual acquaintance, is reprehensible . Of course, it's Romney so what else is new.

I agree....but, the Seal's family and the American People will never, ever get one....but, I bet this naked ploy turned off lots more folks than just you and I....and this is one of the many reasons , on voting day...he will NOT get the votes of caring, thinking American souls!

Shameless exploitation—only one of many reasons why Mitt Romney is not worthy of being our President.
