A 75th Anniversary for the American Dream, a 25-Year Anniversary for Me

Posted: 02/11/2012 1:17 pm

On this day 25 years ago, in 1987, I became a filmmaker. It was around 10 in the morning and the first-ever roll of Kodak 16mm film for my first-ever movie was loaded into my friend's camera to shoot the very first scene of Roger & Me. I had no idea on that morning in Flint, Mich. what my life would be like after that, or what would happen to Flint, or to General Motors. It all felt fairly ominous, though -- after all, GM, which was posting record profits at the time, was closing its first Flint factory (the first of what would become many) and unemployment in Flint had officially been listed as high as 29 percent. Surely things couldn't get much worse.

That morning, 25 years ago today, a group of autoworkers had come together on the lawn of the soon-to-be-closed Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac assembly plant to raise their voices against the closing -- and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Great Flint Sit-Down Strike, which had begun at that very factory. That strike, in 1936-37, was actually an occupation. Hundreds of workers took over the factories in Flint and refused to leave for 44 days until GM capitulated and recognized their union. The strike inspired thousands of other workers across the country to stage their own occupations and, before you knew it, in the years to follow, factory workers were paid a living wage, with benefits, vacations, and a safe working place.

The middle class and the American Dream were born 75 years ago today, on Feb. 11, 1937, the day the Flint workers won their struggle. And for the next 44 years, working people everywhere got to own their own homes, send their kids to college and never worry about going broke if they got sick. That belief, that life would be good if you were a good citizen and a hard worker, now seems out of reach for nearly half the country which is either living in or near poverty. Perhaps people wouldn't mind it as much if the burden were being evenly shared. But everyone knows that's not the case. In a time of record personal bankruptcies, record home foreclosures, record family and student debt, there are a group of people having the best years of wealth and profit ever recorded in human history. And it is those very people who have made the decisions to export our jobs, to decimate unions, to make college unaffordable, to start wars and to pay themselves with gluttonous joy while paying little or no tax -- this is the 1% that has created the burden so many Americans (and people around the world) now share.

And so, 75 years after the victory in Flint, the battle is now being fought all over again. But this time it's not just about getting paid a dollar an hour, or having Sunday off, or reducing the chance of your hand being crushed in the metal stamping machine. This time, the stakes are even greater: Who is going to own America and control the basic functions of our democracy -- the richest 1% who buy the politicians to get what they want, or the 99% who don't have much these days and live in anxiety or fear of what's around the bend.

I believe that justice will win out again, in the end, just as it did 75 years ago today in Flint in 1937.

I have no special plans to mark this day of anniversaries other than to post a short story I wrote called "Gratitude." You may have read it in my book, but if not, here it is to freely download and enjoy.

If you'd like to hear me read it in my own voice, click here.

It tells, in part, the story of that day I first placed that roll of Kodak film into a movie camera. I am proud of the town I was born in, and I'm proud of my uncle who participated in the Sit-Down Strike. I am grateful to those of you who have gone to my movies over the years, and I thank all of you who have been inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement to speak up on behalf of the 99%.

There's no turning back now. Onward!

Thanks Michael for continuing to be the voice for what remains of the middle class as we have been decimated since the Reagan years which is where it all seemed to have started for my generation. Unfortunately Michael, I'm not sure where all this is going and there seems to be very little light at the end of the tunnel. For the first time in my life, I'm afraid for my kids and grand kids as greed, corruption and politics has taken a front seat to common sense, and at times, even survival. Keep on doing what you do Michael because "Truth" always reaches the masses and speaks volumes.

When I watched Fahrenheit 9/11 I knew it was true though so many people were against it. Lots of places did not even show his film like the area around Fort Hood. One has to be suspicious if our
government or higher ups suppress things.

We owe an enormous "thank you" to Michael Moore. It seems to take a sledge hammer to wake up Americans but Michael Moore's ability to tell a story, connect dots, and put things into perspective is one of the sledge hammers we needed. Today's corporate owned media is telling us nothing and even worse, basically denying the extent of the issues by their non-reporting. Americans are awake now, still a little numb from years of abuse, but awake.

Thanks for being a great warrior for the 99 percent, Michael Moore. Our political and economic systems have got to change so that we don't have to fight the same wars over and over again.

would be nice to have a political party that reflected Mr Moores values. only 2 choices this time again.. ron paul or a bildenberger candidate.

Why only 2 choices?

If the name's on the ballot, what's stopping us from drastically altering the course of this nation's future? Nothing will change if we continue to settle for this or that shill for the 99%, regardless of party affiliation.

Go Justice and go Green.

Thanks for posting this, it’s just what I was googling. This is why I like blogs, you get a personal opinion from someone rather than a corporation trying to sell you on something, or an idea. I’ll be reading your blog more often!Juice Recipes

In June, 1958, my Dad took me (at age 7) on a tour of the assembly plant for Chevrolet. I was mesmerized by the unfolding miracle of a shiny '58 BelAir emerging from a bare frame in 60 minutes.

Was that the same Buick/Olds/Cadillac plant of the Sit-Down Strike?

I remember visiting through the late 60s to relatives in Flint and was struck by how prosperous it all seemed - didn't Flint have the highest average income sometime in the 60s?

What has happened since seems like an economic crime. The middle class is, without debate, being eviscerated, and Flint, its prime vs. today, is Exhibit A.

Thank goodness there's a popular "crusader" in the presence of Michael Moore to put power's feet to the fire.

excellent post...AND as real WAGES are reduced or your hours cut so that your employer does not have to pay benefits we now see that Bernanke is about to start printing FIAT dollars again on Quantitative Easing Part 3 ..this is where the Fed buys mortgage backed securities (TOXIC DEBT) and transfers this debt to taxpayers. What results is inflation. just look at our food costs today.Food prices are also responding to the general increase in inflation caused by lower interest rates and a higher money supply, with the Consumer Price Index indicating a 68% jump in world food prices over the last five years. Grocery stores have been absorbing some of this cost, but analysts suspect this is about to change.
while standing in line to get checked out I SEE that most now are paying $200 a week for food...this is getting ugly folks...are you listening Mr. Moore? shout it from the roof tops.

Just a thought- There are an awful lot of 99% versus 1% postings. Seems that an awful lot want to become part of the new 2% and st88f the other 98%.

Some of the posters here think that Mr. Moore is a miracle worker. Some of the requests of him are ridiculous. For instance: Hey Michael, can you stop global warming? Or: Hey Michael, can you create us oh say 50,000 jobs?
Me: Good job Mr. Moore, thank you.

The battle is the same - us vs them. It will seemingly never change. We live in a time where, and I hate to see it, fascism is prevailing, again. This is not remarkable.
Don't misunderstand. This brand of fascism is operating within the cape of democracy and therefore has been 'modernized.' Proof - NDAA, Patriot Act(s). That is just a sample and you can look them up on your own.
If the House GOP had its way, every Liberal achievement since the the New Deal would be overturned, repealed, or otherwise gotten rid of.

Correction below: I meant "picket" a store, not "picked."

Thank your for all you have done. Myself, I try to stay positive since negativity is self-defeating. However a new law in the works would make speaking out for Animals a punishable offense. Already we have the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, under which your run-of-the-mill ordinary animal advocates and activists can be jailed if they cause an animal enterprise to lose money. If they picked a store that sells foie gras, puts sign up at a factory farm ete. etc. Anyone who advocates fairness, even if he or she ins't particularly fond of other species as I am, should be mobilized to speak out against such injustice; even at the risk of censorship.

"under which your run-of-the-mill ordinary animal advocates and activists can be jailed if they cause an animal enterprise to lose money."

What should happen if activists decided to engage in acts that prevent employees from getting to work and that employee subsequently loses their job (read cause an enterprise/household to lose money)?

Or say we recruit a lot of body builders to block every entrance to a(n) (insert one of Veganconnie's sacred institutions; I'll take a stab at it Planned Parenthood).

Your trivialization of the American Revolution, speaks volumes.

But, St. Petersburg is still there for those who prefer its "perfection."
