When the first source on today's Roy Cohn Award recipient came forward approximately six months ago, he and I decided to wait and see where the presidential election went and how this person's boss performed. Dismally.
First a multiple choice question: Which nominee for President of the United States is homophobic and has a gay chief of staff at his Senate office in Washington, DC?
A. John McCainIf you guessed "B," you're in the wrong spot. You belong here. If you guessed "A," congratulations, you passed with flying colors.
B. Barack Obama
Mark Buse is not just a Chief of Staff for a homophobic United States Senator, but he is helping that Senator get elected to the White House.
Does Mark Buse fit the Barney Frank rule? Without a doubt. While McCain voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment, he supports amending state constitutions defining marriage as between a man and a woman. McCain knows our country needs everyone who wants to serve in the military and he knows that DADT is wrong, yet he swings to the right on repealing it.
Worst of all, and a demonstration of his inability to act rationally and with the country's best interests at heart, he picked someone who, if she becomes president (very likely), will be the most homophobic in American history.
With that in mind, and after confirming the information with two other sources, I decided it was time to present Buse the Roy Cohn Award for working against the interests of the lesbian and gay community while living as a gay man.

So, when the source an I talked again, I got some details. The main source (I have since confirmed the story with two others and Mike Signorile has the ex-boyfriend on the record) talked to me about how he met Buse at a number of gay parties, including one at Buse's house. Parties at the Buse residence, according to the source, would sometime become sexual in nature as the evening went on. The source told me, Ironically, that Buse and his partner of over ten years had a sling hanging in, of all places, the closet. (And Buse's screenames on AIM? dupontpig2008 and dccouple2play!)
My source, who did not know if Buse and his partner had an open relationship had a brief sexual encounter with Buse alone. The source, due to work considerations must remain anonymous.
Here is my delivering the award to Buse's office on Friday (he wasn't there...well they said he wasn't, but the guy at the desk seemed to be emailing him back and forth at his desk):
TAKE ACTION!
Does the McCain campaign truly support LGBT Americans? Let's see when FOCUS ON THE FAMILY weighs in. TAKE ACTION and CALL FOCUS ON THE FAMILY and THANK THEM FOR SUPPORTING JOHN MCCAIN even though he has gay Americans in high places on his staff, including his Chief of Staff.
You can reach FOF at 1-800-A-FAMILY (1-800-232-6459)! Call and thank them today

Democrats pulled the same backfiring tactics in 2004, where Edwards tried to alienate value voters from the republican ticket by calling out Mary Cheney- it backfired then as will did now- in fact- it should alienate gay people from the democratic party- I don't see any gay cheif's of staff at the Obama campaign, and to learn that Buse IS out to most everyone in the Beltway, isn't it exciting tat we have a Republican who is willing to listen to people from all backgrounds and orientations in the whitehouse- Democrats would do well to not cry wolf when they themselves offer few dedicated supporters of gay rights and a schizophrenic approach to gay marriage by their party's nominee. At least republicans can agree to disagree and work together on more pressing issues like the economy.
Wake up gay people! and that goes for Jews and blacks, the democratic party is not working for anyone but their own reelection- and especially not for the progression of American interests or the American people. Anyone who understands politics in the least, knows that everyone in Washington is fine with gay people, it's just a constituency game when democrats support or republicans oppose gay rights legislation- using us both ways for votes, while at the same time just giving lip service to the issues. gay rights are not the most or even top ten priority facing this country, but democrats would be happy to tax gay and straight people alike to redistribute that wealth to their REAL core constituency- the entitlement generation that IS the new democratic party of handouts. Just take as evidence how quickly democrats are willing to throw this gay man under the bus- simply because they can't fathom why anyone could be gay in politics and disagree with them perhaps on more pressing matters than gay rights- it's a betrayal- utter hypocrisy- but there is no hypocrisy in the tearing down of a gay man by a party that prides itself on its pride agenda- until the gay person in question isn't a democrat- then ridicule, outting is acceptable-
Obama is also against gay marriage....I have not seen McCain or his chief of Staff try to pull a Bush Cheney Gay Rights wedge attack. They have said nothing about it. Outing him is no less despicable because he is a Republican. And what's homophobic here is the insinuation that " his parties often became sexual" ooooooh! Dirty boys, isn't that salacious? You are pathetic!
You know, as a gay person this is kind've exciting to me to see another gay person who is willing to make a personal sacrifice and focus on the broader issues affecting this country. I hate when liberals thinks everyone should be defined by their proper "label"- and act based solely according to that issue that most urgently affects their label: Gays should vote democratic because of gay issues, women should because abortion rights- now watch them feast on this like they did Palin's daughter- as if to call out the Republican party for finally having all the baby-momma drama that liberals are more comfortable with other liberals having. What makes my stomach churn is how quickly gay people and women will tear each other down, just because they don't agree with a political stance- That it's OK to bring this guy Buse's sexual history up and whatever that entails not only does a disservice to all gay people seeking employment in public office, but it stabs at the constituency democrats and liberals just take for granted as democratic-
Will someone please enlighten me? What's the "Roy Cohn Award"?
Look him up. He was a mean spirited powerful gay man supporting Joseph McCarthy's destruction of peoples lives. James Woods did a great job portraying him in the 1992 movie Citizin Cohn.,

It is comforting to know that detachment from reality is not limited to the straight members of the Republican party.
uhm, you cant out someone who is already out
Yes you can. You can out him to the people who suppor McCain/Palin and don't know. He may be "out" inside the beltway, but how many people outside of Washington even knew his name muchless that he's gay?
Wanna bet?
This is just to delicious. There have to be party pics floating around with screen names like those.
Oh, I can't WAIT to see how Republicans are going to spin this one!
Fabulous.
Maybe Sarah search can 'pray away the gay' for Mr. Buse LOL
Hypocrisy Abounds !
great work mike!
