A Moron Will Rise

Posted: 11/15/11 05:36 PM ET

Connect the dots between George W., Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, Rick Perry and Herman Cain and what you end up with is a roadmap of stupid.  It's the one thing about the current Republican party that the rest of us find so baffling, this obsession with choosing "regular" over extraordinary.  For some reason, there is a particular type of voter who wants only the candidate who talks like them, walks like them, drives the same pickup truck, prays in the same church, drinks the same beer, and shoots the same animals.  These voters, these "regular Americans" who'd rather place their faith in a neighbor than a leader have ruined their party, drowned their country, and broken the world.

Believe it or not, I don't think I'm actually making a political argument.  I'm a Democrat, yes, but I can appreciate the very real and valid positions that many on the Right hold dear: Small government, personal responsibility, freedom from overregulation, state's rights, robust defense, a strong Israel.  Even in the areas where I disagree, I recognize that there are cogent arguments to be made for all of the above.  The problem is that so many people on the Right inexplicably favor leaders who are incapable of making those arguments.

I think most people will agree at this point that Bachman, Perry and Cain are genuine idiots.  Between the three of them there probably isn't enough brain power to finish a crossword puzzle, let alone tackle the challenges of Iran, North Korea, China, Russia, Al Qaeda, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, the European debt crisis, our own economy, the mortgage crisis, the jobs exodus, or the political paralysis in Washington.

What about Newt Gingrich?  He's the smart one, right?  Wrong.  Newt is like "the other white meat," same cholesterol, better marketing.  He just says he's the smartest guy in the room so often that the dumberazzi are actually starting to believe him.  That brings me to Huntsman, the exact opposite of Newt.  Huntsman is smart, but is too humble and sane to get any attention.  Speaking of sane, there's Santorum, who most certainly isn't.  But that isn't his real problem.  The real problem is that he makes everyone queasy, and I don't even mean the Google thing.

As with most conversations about the Republican field right now, all things narrow down to the inevitable -- Mitt Romney.  Is he a smart guy?  Definitely. Then why do they all hate him? Because even his own party can see that he's morally bankrupt.  Mitt Romney would change his gender if it meant winning an election.

So, what is a Republican to do?  New frontrunners appear as often as those infamous "brain freezes" of theirs.  There is no sure thing, no one who makes you feel safe, no one who you can count on.   The Left is thrilled, of course.   But, suddenly, I find myself worried for all of us.   We have real problems.  Big problems.  Scary problems.  Our problems require more than just "regular guys," and even more than the run-of-the-mill extraordinary ones.   We need heroes, heroes on the Right and the Left.

Yeah, a lot of us have been pondering this for some time. It takes above average intelligence to run the American empire. We have been on auto-pilot (laissez faire) for decades now.

I'm wondering why there seems to be no one on the right, no one, capable of stepping up to the grueling task of leading this country. Certainly no politicians. These guys (mainly) are so bent and determined to hold onto their cushy congressional gigs that they're willing to sell their souls to Grover Norquist and destroy any type of credibility they may have had. Business? There's no money in it, no thanks. Academia? Too much work for too little return. Academics can make lots of money "consulting" with financial institutions. Where are their intellectuals with gravitas (remember that word when it was applied to George W. Bush? I still giggle at that.) Missing in action, that's where. Pat Buchanan? Bill Kristol? They are adrift... hopefully on a permanent basis.

Obama is what this country needs. The problem with his time in office so far is that we as voters have not given him the tools to carry out our will. The good news is that we do not have to wait for the election to play out to deliver the goods. Your representatives cleverly have installed phone lines in their offices and the post office still, this week anyways, delivers letters to them. If you are like me, and according to all of the polling there is a 9/10 chance that you are, you can reach out and give these dogs in congress and the house exactly the kind of message they need to remember who they work for. give them the yank on the choke chain bring them to heel. It ha never been a crime to put your dog down if it has turned rabid it is a responsibility to your neighbors to do so.

As a Republican, I whole-heartily agree that our candidates are laughable. That's sad, but as God would have it, he gave us Obama.

Obama is perfect for America since his smile, ORATORY and swagger make the liberals giggle and ooze with delight and his false bravado, run from conflict, go hide, do nothing PRACTICE works great for Republicans.

So here's my view of the future:

Obama wins
Liberals win House seats but not enough to take the majority
Liberals lose the Senate majority, but the split remains fairly close.

Obama will only become less effectual (yes it is possible).

The idea that you talk about swagger when discussing Obama is laughable. George W. Bush was the swaggering cowboy who pranced around the desk and was surrounded by "Mission Accomplished" idiocy. He wore his flight suit and his codpiece and made all the conservatives swoon. False bravado? Bush had it and never caught bin Laden. Obama doesn't need it: He actually got Bush's bogeyman.

Sorry.....I live in Detroit and for two months after his election the black women would call-in to talk radio and talk about his sexy swagger. Their words not mine.

The 'Just Like Me' thing is one of the reaons Dubya beat Kerry in '04. Kerry came across as a guy whose coffee table would have stacks of books and magazines. Dubya presents as a man who would have remote control devices and maybe even a game controller apparatus or two on his. There are many Americans who cannot fathom being able to enjoy reading....and are very suspicious of those who do so. They spend great amounts of time and money on television. They're the ones who find Bachmann, Perry and Cain appealing.

That what's-on-the-coffee-table analysis is excellent! Nicely done.

When people write about the 2012 GOP field, I doubt that they will come up with the name I have for them. If 2008's Dem field was the Dream Team, this poor GOP crop of 2012 would be best labeled the Legion of Super Zeroes.

As a Republican, quite frankly I'm offended. As an American, I'm forced to admit you're correct. To think that someone who wasn't aware that China had nuclear weapons has actually made it this far, well that's just plain scary. As a Texan, I'm proud that Rick was able to hit a coyote. Depending upon the distance, at least he probably wasn't, um, "pickled". Newt's skeletons have skeletons. Huntsman and Paul have decent ideas, and probably no chance at the nomination. I don't want someone like me. I want someone better, someone not prone to rash decisions, someone who understands we have some serious problems ahead of us. The idea that the needs of our nation are being given short shrift over some pledge the Republicans made with a carnival barker is just scary. This country is at a crossroads. The "police state" is well past its infancy, at least in New York. Our regulators can't regulate....anybody. In short, we have problems, major problems. And these rubes don't have a clue where they are on most days, so they darn well can't see where I'm coming from. I'm not a Democrat, but the the President will probably get my vote. It won't be a vote FOR him, it will be a vote AGAINST the Republican nominee. That's a heck of a choice to have to deal with.

That you're willing to make that kind of a reasoned, sane choice says much about your clear vision of where we are. Sometimes, there are no good choices...just ones that suck less than others.
