McCain Would Rather Win an Election Than Pick a Qualified Running Mate

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

She's never actually used the word Shiite in a sentence before. She's never had to. She's never given any thought whatsoever to nuclear proliferation. She's never had to. She's never thought about Israel, Russia, Korea, or Iran. She's never even thought about Mexico. So, what HAS she thought about? I mean, what has she thought about that's going to directly affect you and me if (yes, God forbid) she has to slip into the role of the most powerful leader on the face of the planet? Well, we know she's given a lot of thought to your uterus. Hell, I think about your uterus all the time and nobody should ever elect me to any office.

I was reading my friend Dan Senor's piece in the Wall Street Journal today, in which he takes Biden to task for his once staunch position on the splitting up of Iraq. It's a smart argument Dan makes -- and I'm not his audience, believe me. I'm so lefty I'd consider going gay if I could date Obama (oh, you bet I drank the Koolaid and I've been all fuzzy ever since).

So I'm reading Dan's excellent article and I'm hating its well reasoned argument - how Biden was wrong about Iraq and why he's mysteriously dropped that position, etc - and I'm realizing something that put a smile on my face. There is not a fireball's chance in Alaska that Sarah Palin could make that argument in a debate with Joe Biden. She lacks the gravitas, she lacks the knowledge, she lacks the experience. If she were a news anchor we'd say she reeks of local.

But most importantly, what does that say about John McCain? He has now destroyed his two favorite arguments against Obama. Experience was a pretty good argument. Yesterday. But the more offensive and controversial argument is the one that inspired the McCain campaign's clumsy, communist-era slogan - "Country First." Aside from sounding like the name of a midwestern savings-and-loan, the phrase is an obvious reference to McCain's mantra that Obama "would rather win an election than win a war. " He has repeatedly challenged Obama's motives, his character, his judgment and his patriotism. Sarah Palin is the glass house inside of which McCain will now have to throw those stones. Because, what does it say about a man who chooses someone so grossly unqualified as his running mate for the highest office in the land simply because she might - might - get the Hillary vote? What does it say for his opinion of those very women he hopes to enlist?

Does John McCain think about actually governing? Or is he merely focused on winning? Because a man of 72 years old with a history of health problems has to consider the possibility that his Vice President might actually have to govern. No, he's not thinking about that. He's not thinking about you or me. John McCain is thinking about John McCain. And his running mate is thinking about next year's salmon run. And your uterus.

She's a trojan horse. At the convention she'll decline the VP nomination saying that she's in no way experienced enough to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Then she and the whole convention will segue into an attack on Obama's "inexperience". After that McCain will present his real VP pick.

Interesting. Sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock suspense plot. The point is that our country's problems are way too critical to engage in a kind of soap opera drama played out by bad, incompetent, actors.

At least Palin agrees with thousands of scientists who clearly have proved that humans are not the principal cause of global warming.

That's about one thousand six hundred short of two thousand. I think you meant four hundred scientists cherry picked by republican committees from all the scientists around the world. That would be more accurate.

Show us a scientist who says that humans are the principle cause of global warming, and I'll show you a liar!

You mean the less than a thousand worldwide, as compared to the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS who agree that we are at least a small contributor to global warming????

What an interesting name for a Huffington Post article, "McCain Would Rather Win an Election Than Pick a Qualified Running Mate." It's almost identical to the the conservative statement, "The Democrat Party Would Rather Win an Election Than Pick a Qualified Canididate."

What a brilliant pick McCain made.

This conservative gambit that Obama and Palin qualifications are remotely similar doesn't pass the smell test. She may be colorful like Jesse Ventura, and we know states sometimes get fed up enough to try someone like that. But that's not the same thing, and if you ever actually paid attention to Obama that would be beyond obvious.

What's obvious to me is that she is more qualified to be vice president than Obama is to be president.

Jjust what does a "qualified" running mate mean? Apparently Bush was qualified since he was elected as was Jimmy Carter...so being "qualified" does not equate to being a hell of a President. Arnold had no political history to speak of and he became governor of California. He would have run for President if he was able and made a good one. A domestic or foreign relations background and military service does not guarantee a good President. Just plain common sense, hard work and seeing to the needs of the people is all it takes. Sarah Palin seems to have all of those "qualities" and more so she definitely "qualifies" to take the position. Let's not make the Presidency more that what it is..just take a look at who is there now.

She's got 5 kids and the last one is challenged and 4 months old? Isn't she basically abandoning that responsibility by becoming vice president?

I hate to bring that up but being vice president and being governor isn't exactly the same and isn't a 9 to 5 job.

She admittedly doesn't even know anything about the war in Iraq? Isn't that McCain's big dig on Obama? Makes NO SENSE.

Maybe she can spell ok, but... she can't pronounce nuclear. She may have negotiated with Russia about small state matters, but she's not up to the job. Period.

Have you seen the clip on YouTube where she asks what the VP does all day? This is a pathetic move.

Completely gratuitous and an insult to Hillary Clinton and all the women of the world for that matter. This is one instance where the Republicans have been truly transparent.

And while Obama has a qualified running mate, he himself is unqualified. Go figure.

You are so wrong. Obama is qualified. He has the judgement and knowledge. He was elected. He took he case to the American people. He was not appointed- big difference.

18 million voters thought Barack was qualified, only one thought Sarah was qualified big difference Obama was voted in, Palin was chosen

not true. he is qualified. mccain says it his experience that is the problem. you know, is he ready. lets face it, experience is not based on years on the earth when it comes to politics. only mccain would add a woman because she is a woman. although as a narcissist he doesn't believe he has any weaknesses. but, everyone does.

I think Obama proved last night that he is very qualified. He understands the issues this country faces. Sara Palin doesn't know squat about foreign policy. Yikes, what a scary choice.

Sara Palin is John McCain's Dan Quayle. Like George H.W. Bush, McCain is too insecure to pick a vp who might disagree with him on issues. She's a lightweight in a pantsuit.

McCain's handlers told him: "Great news senator. We've got a big state governor on the ticket!". Nobody had the heart to tell him they meant square mileage-wise...

Isn't the woman governor Palin a member of Monty Python? Oh, now I remember, that was Michael Palin. McCain has totally lost his marbles.

Isn't it obvious that John Sidney McCain III is so disgusted by his own campaign that he's trying to sink it himself?

Totally agree. It's internalized GOPhobia - he hates what his party has become and can see no other way out so he's sabotaging himself.
