Reading the Pictures: Beached White Male? Oh, Please.

1. Don't these big news mags do this "endangered white male" thing at least once a year?

2. Given Newsweek's relaunch (and continued financial straights, I assume), the pandering (or, "protecting the base") is at least comprehensible.

3. No beach on Wall Street.

4. Sorta odd graphic showing up, as it does, on the anniversary week of the massive BP oil spill. Looks pristine.

5. The whales should sue.

6. Dying for you thoughts on the Ah-nold display.

Beached white males? It's about time. Maybe they'll stop screwing up the country.

Poor, oppressed babies. I feel their pain. (Not really.)

The idea that white males are oppressed in some way, is nonsense. They have the advantages of being white and male, in a racist America. If they had prepared themselves, they wouldn't have these problems. There are more women in college, than men, women are preparing themselves. White males, are perpetual whiners.

I'm not sure what their story said, but there is a legitimate story here. There are millions of (generally older) white males now out of previously good/great jobs and they not likely to get them back.

Older white men, can blame republicans, for that. Republicans made sure, that those good jobs, were shipped overseas. Now older white men and women, will be losing medicare, and social security. They can blame republicans for that, also. The good thing about republican policies, is that they made white people, poor.

The story is this. "Good Jobs" are in the end associated with manufacturing. Manufacturing has left, and like pulling a chain, the 'good jobs' are following.

WOW! When did NEWSWEEK become a rag?! I will never read THAT one in a waiting room again~!

But the clinging suit on the "White Male" is rather erotic. That alone will sell magazines. - Pundit

I like it. Speaking as a white guy, it seems to me that we have been way overrated for centuries.

Given the number in my 'pod' that are accurately portrayed by both the picture and article, I find it disturbing.

The love and respect 'beached white males' get nowadays is enough to make me regret inventing the industrial, information, and computer ages....

If other ethnic groups and women's brainpower hadn't been excluded from opportunities for education and jobs for so many centuries we probably would have had all those things and more much sooner. Just think, all that brainpower wasted for so many years to make sure a certain demographic always had jobs.
06:19 PM on 04/25/2011
You shouldn't regret those things at all...mainly because you did not personally have a hand in any of them. What you should regret, however, is your attitude, which only furthers the idea that middle class white men are a bunch of big huge crybabies.

I AGREE! I'll take a man of color any day. "No beach on Wall St." Isn't that the truth.

Young professional women in Manhattan now make MORE than men in the same job categories. It's just a fact. Women are CRUSHING men academically from K through grad school. Women are like 57% of college undergrads now, and the percentage would be much higher if affirmative action efforts were not being made--especially at the most selective schools in the country--to shore up the increasingly uncompetitive males trying to get in. There's no reason women won't totally dominate Wall St. itself after another generation, IF they want to, since the only thing that counts on Wall St. is RESULTS, and there is no reason women can't outsmart men at investing just as they have in high school, college, law school, med school, and business school. Naturally Tina Brown is trying all she can to keep Newsweek alive. Naturally she's biased towards this story, being Exhibit A of how women are taking over MANY fields once thought of as male, as big-time publishing totally was. All that said, women are taking over. They are clearly simply SMARTER and more competent than men, except in higher math and physics, where, alas, Larry Summers was, so far, RIGHT.

That seems like a bit of a broad stroke, wouldn't you say?

This notion that one birth-trait group of people is smarter or better than another birth-trait group, you may take note, is dead. One thing is clear. You harbor some pretty serious inferiority issues if you feel that you must denegrate an entire gender. That women are still pushed down is a disgrace to humankind, not just to women.. That you would choose to do the same to men, is a disgrace to the women and men who have fought against the discrimination that made this so.
