Here's your visual grand tour of Tuesday night's second Obama - McCain head-to-head. (You can click any pic for a larger size.)
In the early phase of the debate, there wasn't a drop of humor in that room. It was as if the audience was channeling the full alienation and anger of the American people over the economic crisis and the Wall Street bailout. As McCain and Obama offered generalities and mostly talked past the audience, these people weren't even close to buying it.
Watching her throughout, the woman lower left seemed like no Obama fan (in contrast to the woman in blue behind her). But Obama knocked it out of the park with the health care answer, interweaving common sense, specifics and concern. The expressions are interesting, the audience plugging in almost in spite of itself, half-locked in its initial skepticism.
Yeah, I'm a major Michelle fan ... and I've been missing her big time since the DNC. I thought it was classy for BHO to mention her in his last answer. Also, I like the effect here taken off my older TV.
Sometimes you can actually see a person grow in the course of a few minutes. Having studied Obama quite closely over the past year-and-a-half, that's what I witnessed in this foreign policy exchange.
After Obama pressed the option of pursuing al Qaeda in Pakistan (top), McCain attacked him for being inexperienced and advocating an invasion. Rather than moving on, however, Obama challenged the debate format, insisting on a follow-up to McCain's follow-up. After clarifying that he never called for the invasion of Pakistan, Obama turned his focus on McCain as the rash and intemperate one, citing "bomb, bomb Iran" and McCain's call for the destruction of North Korea. The images reflect Obama's profound confidence, self-possession and poise in holding the floor while taking it directly to McCain.
You can catch the sequence in part three of CNN's debate video from the 9:28 through about the 16:00 mark.
I really love this shot, but it bears explanation. As Brokaw was wrapping up the debate with closing comments, McCain assumed they were finished and stepped in front of the teleprompter so Brokaw couldn't see his lines. In calling Mac out on it, McCain bolted suddenly to the right. For me, at least, the moment captured Mac's impulsivity and, in a literal and spatial way, some of his boundary issues. The blur itself (again, captured off my old TV) is a digital portrait of how hyper and jittery the man is -- and how he can never downshift.

I'm a 67 year old white woman and voted the first time for JFK and proud of it. I know the issues and trust Obama without a doubt in my mind, rememebr I have seen many many debates and politicians. I do not see color, I see a man, a decent man that loves his country, family and really wants the best for everyone, not just a few. I have seen Mccain all through the years, and what I seen I did not like, still don't , not a Maverick. My boyfriend was in the Vietnam war, he died in combat, he was the hero.
This is our last chance to get it right, no second chance here, we as Americans are in deep trouble and under Mccain it will not change and if he is elected , think if he died in office, I really do not want someone like Palin running our country much less having McCain in there, both are war hungry
Chris Rock said something that I had never thought of, He said " We black people have been voting for white people every since we have been able to vote, most of us are Democrats and we step up to the plate every four years without fail, now would you have some faith and return the favor"?
Michael I'd really like to hear your take on another photo that is up on the first page of HuffPo. It shows just the right hands of the 2 candidates in an apparent handshake. Obama's fingers are closing around McCain's hand, while McCain's fingers are splayed. Now I don't know if the latter is a result of any injuries that McCain suffered during his imprisonment in Vietnam, but if it isn't, then the image jarred with me.
Ha ha. Check out the young guy in the tie from the second pic. He looks scared to death of McCain. OMG, he's standing right there! My wife and I joked that if McCain had been standing that close to us speaking, we'd have a hard time containing our laughter.
Im curious about what happened after the debates. How the candidates interacted with the audience members. Did they pose for pics, shake hands, stick around to speak to people one on one?
I noticed Obama doing this, I did not notice McCain. If McCain immediately left the debate it really is a testament to what he thinks of this process and what he thinks of the group who shall, in McCain mind remain nameless (the middle class)
CSPAN showed that the Obamas stuck around for fifteen minutes or so to shake hands and talk to the people, while the McCains split immediately after the debate.
The Obamas stayed around, signed autographs and posed for pictures and generally listened to people and actually talked to them!! When was the last time you saw J McCain engage a voter??? In the 5 times that Obama has been in Montana he has engaged people around him and listened to their issues. He even held one of my friends baby who was crying and tried to calm her down! I have so much respect for Barack & Michelle! They were obviously both raised by parents who taught them to respect other people and their elders!
Obama attempted to shake McCain's hand, Johnny kind of pulled Cindy in front to avoid the handshake, so Obama shook her hand.
The picture of Michelle looking at Barak is absolutely wonderful. There is so much genuine love and affection in that look.
I've got to get up and run to the ladies room because I don't want my co-workers to see the tears in my eyes....
How can anyone still be undecided? Have they been under a rock the last 18 months? Do they not care about America or what? I just don't buy it.
Undecided= I'm not sure I can vote for an Af Am, but McSame hasn't convinced me not to... I'm still holding out hope
Wow, you actually publically admitted "I'm not sure I can vote for a (insert race of choice here) man." ????
I'm terrified that anyone can be that lacking in the ability to evolve, but I see so much of it everyday that it makes me fear for the future of my country.
And before you ask, I'm a middle aged white American female.
I applaud your honesty. What I would ask of you: focus on your country and who would be best for it. Really, the answer is out there, and its not McCain.
Again, please think of your future, our future, and our descendant's futures. Its not about color, its about capability.
Thank you.
Thanks for your honesty. I'm an "Af Am"(smile) who has voted for white men all of my life!I simply attempt to vote for what's best for my city, state, and country. I hope that you will do the same. Again, I applaud your honesty.
CCSKY.. what if you were blind all your life??
How would you vote then, if you never saw skin color?
They're struggling with what they know to be right, and what they've been taught to believe.
It's a rough ride for some. As much as I'd like to say otherwise, their indecision is not about the "issues" nor is it about "leadership." (Neither of these people is going to be running the government single-handedly. And it's obvious to see whose proposals, leadership and advisors excell. Those excuses are just distractions).
It's just hard for some people to believe that a black man could actually be capable of what they're witnessing; and they're afraid.
And, let's face it, they're waiting for that ultimate "got'cha" that will help to confirm their fears and justify their reluctance in voting for Obama.
It's a tough decision. Personally, I pray for them, and their ability to ultimately do the right thing.
Well said, really well said, Matt. I was about to say something snarky about the McCain people but read your comment and preferred your comment. Thanks.
I am always amazed to see be lead by their fears and bias instead of their hopes and opportunities. What I don't get is voting against your best interest - EVER!!
There's only one answer to that question--and it's unfortunate.
Did anyone else notice that last night after McCain finished each of his answers he released the handheld microphone from one hand and caught it with the other. It gave me the feeling of "so there, take that, I've gotten the spin I wanted to get out and now I'm done". Turn that switch off for that resposne and reload for the next one.
I felt the same way. EXACTLY. It was like he was saying "NAILED IT" or "take that!" With a little "he, he, he" under his breath.
With all due respect to McCain's service record, I do not believe this makes him a good presidential candidate. Obama 08
After all his years of experience, Tom Brokaw still needs lines to read? He couldn't remember a couple of sentences?
I've got to say that McCain was genuine and real when he spoke of the sacrifice of the military; no matter what anyone says, I truly believe he loves his Country. As they all do. Even though he's plunged in the polls. Whatever, am hoping for the best and love the democratic process.
I do not think McCain loves his country. He uses his country to grab power for self. If he loved his country, he would object to the hate rally's his campaign speeches have become.
Yes-and he wouldn't have made such a reckless choice for VP as Palin.
If he really cared for the military, btw, he wouldn't have voted against all those benefits etc. for veterans. McCain is for McCain. That's it. His goal of being president is all about ego and personal ambition-not public service.
I agree. He loves his country the way romeo loved juliet: self-love, not selfless.
If McCain saw America on her death slab, he would self-destructively play craps rather than resuscitate her.
Jalyn, I appreciate the way that you express yourself and I respect your opinion. It is easy to allow strong feelings concerning this election to turn into anger. You do not seem to have done so and only want what is best for this country. With all due respect, I would ask you to do a little more research regarding your choice of candidate. Here are some sites to start with but feel free to look for more yourself! http://www.truthout.org/100708HA

As you know, this is an important election. Our economy is at risk. Please do some more research then make the choice that is right for the country. Thank you.
he does love his country. he can keep on loving his country but he will not lead it.
That picture of Michelle Obama? I think many a man would love to see their lady look at them that way.
PRICELESS!
As a man, when you see a look like that you suddenly feel invincible and as if you can take on the world. He's gonna need her at his back when in the White House.
Yes, I noted that too..and since she is a successful person in her own right and confident in her self I think this is an "I love you" authentic emotion she is showing. I hope we see more of her as time goes on.
He seems like a pretty easy guy to love--just sayin'.
So long, era of stupid stepford wives (Laura and Cindy). Michelle is here!!
amen. they have obvious and tremendous and deep love and respect for each other.
the mccain's have cash and power between them.
I rewatched the Debate on CNN with the Favorable Tracker at the bottom of the screen. Seems McSame didn"t come off nearly as favorable as O. I can also understand why they used Undecided voters, because I sure would have rated it differently.
Two other points, First: Could someone pleas ask McSame to explain any of his "I know how to xxxxx" comments? If he really knows how to get OBL then why the hell doesn"t he let Bush or the Military in on it? And get him to define "Victory" in Iraq?
Second: How about the "Meet and Greet" after the debate? I am sure some people will say that is part of the Rock star Obama thing, but I see it as someone that is willing to press the flesh and engage the people. I also saw McSame shake 10 or 12 hands and then leave. Was he tuckered out, or was he unhappy about his performance, maybe he just doesn"t like to be in the same room as Obama?
I bet he was angry at Brokaw for asking him to get out of the way of the teleprompter. And the spoiled petulant man showed his colors..a quiet tantrum.
you know it is very hard for Cindy McCain to see Obama treat his wife with love and respect....
It was an odd spectacle, watching McCain meander about, unfocused, over or under medicated. He"d have been better off to stay put and answer the questions with some of that strait talk expresso instead of proving his proclivity toward spinning quaint fictions predicated on too much time dreaming on the crapper. It"s painful to witness the continuing torture of this fine specimen of one of America's "finest." What a crippled nation we are, the best the Republicans can offer up for the contest is a cranky, mean ol' white guy--"You kids get off my lawn."--and an ignorant boob from the frozen tundra of exceptionalism.
The post PDA shots are very telling and there's already alot of speculation about McCain not shaking hands, beating a quick retreat instead of talking with the audience, his entire body language. There is also alot of comparisons between the warmth, spontaniety and personal appeal of the Obamas in contrast to the cold, face frozen in anger John McCain and perfunctory signs of affection with Cindy. Indeed Cindy, to me, seems to be almost afraid of John. With John's lifelong history of a raging temper I'd find it hard to imagine him turning into Prince Charming walking through any of their houses to greet Cindy, though I can well imagine Count Dracula.
...
So, can you or someone put on a PDA show of them all until the time the McCains leave plus any after they've left the stage?
Also I wish the webcasts would always show both candidates while either is speaking. The body language says volumes. What I saw was Obama most always smiling and looking at McCain, while McCain is almost always doing the opposite and looking angry or dejected.
I agree with you, she often looks rigid and anxious around John. Let's just call this couple the anti-Obamas--the opposite of warm human beings. Even McCain's constant quipping has a bitter, sarcastic edge.
When people lash out so frequently at strangers--even when they're running for office!--you damn well know that they lash out at home. He's got a defensive, irritable, bullying personality, and I know from experience how awful these people are to be around. It's all about them and their wounded egos, 24/7.
But...she chose him! Or rather, she's stuck with him. Hopefully our country won't get stuck with him.
I noticed that the people in the audience basically had no expressions at all for the most part, this was definitely a dull group.
I absolutely love the pic of Michelle looking and listening glowingly at her husband. I'm a huge Michelle fan also!
Dull group or not, at the end (after McCain inexplicably disappeared), they were all over Obama. I can't tell you what a revelation it was to see him and Michelle work the room -- people were beaming, reaching out to shake his hand, get an autograph or have their picture taken with him. It was hard to believe they were independents. They just --- well -- seemed comfortable and happy to be with him. It was a triumph of charm and for the first time (without hesitation or caveats) I felt, as Tom Hanks said in League of Their Own: "We're gonna win!"
I think most independents vote republican. And if people are still not knowing who they will vote for...I feel sorry for their lack of ability to discern. I was glad that the Obamas were so outgoing last night and that the people finally showed a hint of emotion. My gosh..nothing like talking to a deadpan quiet group. My gosh.
I've been having a "We're gonna win!" moment recently, too.
But I also want the moment when Tom Hanks throws the baseball mitt at the bratty little kid who's taunting "You're gonna lo-ose! You're gonna lo-ose!" Maybe we could Sean Hannity in that role. Ahhhh . . . that would be nice.
Michelle is awesome... what a role model. She'll be a great First Lady!
Having two young children myself, Michelle Obama and the Obamas relationship is one thing I really look forward to being in our nations eye. It is so refreshing to see normal, healthy, respectful representations of a marriage. And, yes, Michelle is so awesome just on her own. I think symolically alone they will help transform our mind nationally into a healthier happier one. She's great. They're both great.
I may have missed it but I saw several people have their pics taken w/ Obama but no one did that with McCain. He disappeared too quickly I guess. He seemed out of breath throughout the debate. I think his cancer has come back and he's hiding it. When he talked about medical records being online I could only think, will yours be there, John?
