Reading the Pictures: Palin's Grizzly Mammas (Or: But Enough About You, What About Me?)

What's Your Reaction:

Whoops, did I say "grizzly mammas?" Well, there's nothing plural about this show. It's "Momma Grizzly."

If Sarah Palin's new web video is about a stampede of new conservative female candidates, try to find one in the piece. If the video is about female empowerment, there's little doubt as to who's on the power trip (or the Momma Bear).

As Digby writes:

She is not a serious politician. She is a political celebrity/entrepreneur, collecting money from her fans to fund herself and sell her brand. To the extent that she is working for anyone but herself, she's working for The Republican Party, bringing together some of the disparate strands of the conservative movement, striking the pose of the "outsider." But that is the extent of her serious commitment to politics.

Palin is a "reality" entertainer. Look on the covers of the celebrity magazines and you'll see lots of them. There's a lot of money to be made by someone like her in merchandising alone, much less personal appearances, books etc. I'm guessing she'll find herself on the personal growth/religious circuit too, along with her reality show on TV.

She is a creature of the new political media, maybe the first pure version of her kind. As soon as people grok that, her fund raising and touring will begin to make more sense.

If the hallmark of a narcissist is that, when she look at others, she see herself, it's not surprising how much this video, ostensibly about every other "she" out there, mirrors Palin at every turn -- either literally, or via stills of women inserted for the primary reason that they represent living clones of various Palin personas.

For example, the woman above is the "savagely" angry, Sara-like hotty thrilled to annoy. (The fact the t-shirt traces back to Michael Savage fans only amplifies Palin's skill at indirectly tapping into deep anger, racism and homophobia.)

This image is simply fabulous for the way it echoes and brands the now iconic photos of Palin at the Republican Convention as the mommy glued to baby (it's Trig all over again) as a validation of her patriotism.

And then, shades of Savage, this frame is interesting for the way it can activate some subliminal misandry, or hatred of men. On the manifest level, of course, it's just pure, straight-ahead tea party slogan taking on big government. At another level, though, especially in the 'women-only and "don't be fucking with with us"' context of the video, it can also be read as an attack on men and courtship -- i.e. Opposed to Man dates.

And then, of course, you have the pictures of Sara that, dispensing with symbolism completely, literally mirror her, as if you can't get enough of her (the way she can't get enough of herself) so (and, more than once in the video) let's have two!

2010-07-14-MammaGrizzlies3.jpg

Of course, filling in the edges are otherwise standard campaign shots (in a non-campaign and a non campaign-video, mind you) of cell phone and point-and-shoot idolatry. ...Before they took down the photo link from Palin's Facebook page, it was flooded with "citizen paparazzi" pics like these.

Still though, given Sarah's fascination with legends, as well as her honestly impressive instincts when it comes to siphoning credibility by visually and rhetorically mirroring top top dogs, I like this frame the best -- just don't tread on the lapel button far right!

Talk about celebrity run amok. Shouldn't she be studying for the debates in 2012? She couldn't care less because her fans couldn't care less.

Notice that this video has the YouTube comments feature disabled. Wow, that Sarah is a control freak of epic proportions, isn't she?

"I'LL be the one giving the messages around here and NOBODY ELSE is allowed to make a peep! 'Cuz I'm the mama grizzly, see."

Wow. I gotta say, the video is impressive. It made me feel queasy, but it was impressive.

The Sarah Show would seem to be a force to be reckoned with.

I think the conservative columnist in the Washington Post captured Palin exactly with this...
"The genius of Sarah's message, whatever it is, is that it doesn't matter."

Palin is to politics what the musical group "The Monkeys" were to rock and roll.

I would not want my daughter to emulate Sarah or any of her daughters.

Most women leaders or politicians keep their children protected and out of the limelight. Not in People magazine, US weekly, USA today constantly.

Sarah uses anything and anyone who she thinks can propel her to the top, even her own family.

Yes, true leaders focus their public life on their constituents, and not on themselves. Family is private and to be protected, not exploited.

Spot on lilylake, Caribou Barbie uses her children as props when she wants the spotlight shining on her, and as human shields when those spotlights get too hot for her to handle.

Where are all the non-white momma grizzlies? I thought the Tea Party and Sarah Palin were part of a big tent? Seems like they strictly cater to white conservatives, just like Bush, just like Dole, just like Glenn Beck and the rest of the Tea Baggers. (There are non-white tea party/libertarians, but you don't see them on FOX news all that often)

Sarah's just being honest. To find any Asian, Latino, African-American, or American Indian woman to show in this video is to be completely dishonest about who she appeals to.

Judging by the virulent response of our resident Say-rah P. defenders, Michael, we'd say you've nailed the "Quitta from Wasilla" right on her pale, pointy noggin (one of her pictures is worth more than any of her semi-literate tweets, that's for certain)... ;)

Or her tired Facebook posts. My niece was a fan of hers on Facebook until she published her "crosshairs" piece about targeting Dems. Then, she very publicy unfanned $ister $arah.
03:49 PM on 07/14/2010
I both listened and watched the video "separately"; I watched with out sound and the the reverse. Then, I took notes...it's another word salad as usual, but she's using new trigger words dreamed up by her spin PR team.

What does "fundamental transformation" mean? All she kept saying about it is "we're gonna do somethin' about it..." or, ...."no, we've had enough already"...or, ...."we don't like this" and then her threat down; we're coming to get'cha', Washington. No specifics just word salad...

My favorite line they wrote for her (maybe not) is, "Because moms just kinda know when somethin's wrong"....

Really, Sara? Have you ever, in your entire freakin' life, figured out when something is "wrong"?
Apparently her words don't match her behavior, nor her families, since she's the one that brought up "the kids of the future"...
03:36 PM on 07/14/2010
Well, she certainly doesn't speak for me! She really should've finished her term as governor to have any creditability.

Apparently, bringing that up is being biased. Oh and in case you didn't get the memo from Kathleen Parker, if you attack Sarah Palin you are attacking moms. So you are now anti-mom.

"And then, shades of Savage, this frame is interesting for the way it can activate some subliminal misandry, or hatred of men. "

OH PLEASE SHAW!! The left is the most misandrist party in America! What DOESN'T your party blame on men? VAWA for example. Domestic violence.

So spare anybody your concern for men Mr. Shaw. You and the left tossed us men on the BBQ and shanked us in the back a long time back as your universal scape goats.

Liberals defending men.... yeah spare me. You're party is the most misandrist group of man stabbers on earth.

There is no way on this planet the left will ever draw men into its party as a group. The MRM is never going to buy that the left "cares" about men. The left cries about women supposedly earning 75 cents to a man's dollar but says nothing about the FACT men die 5 times more on the job than women. Nobody sees the left trying to even out THOSE numbers.

Okay, settle down sparky. It's a fact that while Sarah Palin claims to be a "femminist" she has opposed laws that would help women. Laws that would protect their children from toxins, laws that would protect them from abusive men, laws that would guarantee equal pay for equal work. I don't know how you are abusive, you are just angry and you seem to be a partisan. Good day sir, Jesus loves you.
06:54 PM on 07/14/2010
My my, it's a very busy job defending SP.

Havin' to keep up with all those, you know, what is said to be, as I recall about her Americanisms being real, well, it's a real fine day in where I am, yep, rock, flag, and eagle, you betcha.
03:22 PM on 07/14/2010
You progressives just can't stand the idea that you do not represent all women and that you've lost a lot of women. Over 51% of liberal women voted for a patriarchy in the dem primaries in 2008.

We'd have a woman in the white house by now if liberal women didn't have a right to vote.

The choice for us Democratic women wasn't between genders, it was between ideas and was a rejection of 4 to 8 more years of Clinton New Democrat right wing leaning. If your vote is decided by one criteria you are not an informed or sophisticated voter.

So women don't want equal pay for equal work? Women don't want protection from abusive men? Because yeah, sure, there are women who support Palin, they are within their right to do that. But facts are facts and this lady isn't good for women's rights. And you know what, that is a callous statement, don't know if it is abusive (apparently someone flagged you) but it's partisan and mean.
