Reading the Pictures: Mitt's Temperature

(Note: I originally posted this on BagNewsNotes back in November, probably too early in the election cycle for this kind of focus. With the article in WaPo about bullying incidents when Romney was in prep school, however, his temperament seems to be hitting the national radar.  If you take a look at the "Lava From Mount Mitt" post I did four years ago, Mitt's temper has been something I've been interested in for some time.)

****    *******   ****

Aides to Mr. Romney say that he has substantially evolved since his 2008 bid, and that Mitt 2.0 is a more relaxed, confident version of the man voters met then.

- from: On Trail, Casual Friday Versus Boardroom Cool 8/25/11 (NYT)

One longtime aide recalls Mr. Romney, a few weeks after conceding to Senator McCain in 2008, saying "Ahhhh, feels like I finally managed to loosen the laces on my shoes."

from: Lectern Gone, Romney Finds More Success 10/24/11 (NYT)

For all the Levis and plain-language answers that supposedly constitute Mitt 2.0, what we continue to see in Romney is someone who is excitable, always right and constantly taking offense. As Campaign '12 starts to really get rolling, I'm happy to see different sites -- Gawker, for example, piggybacking on this "emotional profile" in TNR -- call out the core feature of Mitt's psychological baggage, which is his temperament. For longer-term readers of The Bag, we laid out the problem in a series of screen shots way back in December '07 -- "Lava From Mount Mitt" -- when he let his guard down in a radio interview with conservative talk show host, Jan Mickelson.

As evidence of the symptom expressing itself more recently, TNR points to the October 18th CNN debate in Las Vegas where Romney gets into it with Rick Perry in the immigration segment. Problem is, citizens are not trained as clinicians so, as perceptive as they might be, they are mostly socialized to look past or simply downplay more aberrant behavior. And in Romney's case, given all the handling and coaching he's receiving on top of his own attempts to stay cool, it's not that he isn't getting getting agitated or getting his back up just as much, but he also knows to rope himself back fairly quickly.

Still, because anger can be cold as well as hot, and because anger can also flash like lightening, the clearest way to isolate Mitt's agitation -- just like in our post in '07 -- is through screen shots where we can more easily witness the affective bolts of stress, vexation and agression take over the man's body.

Mitt's fine.  As long as you don't ask him about things he doesn't want to talk about.  Like everything he's ever said and done thus far...

Don't make Mitt mad. You won't like him when he's mad. Wait, on second thought, make him mad... on live t.v.

Now, in the era of HD tv, with a 52" screen, making the face huge, character is writ large and powerfully in everything any candidate says. Obama projects serenity and calm, and makes you want to continue watching. Romney, like W, makes me only want to change the channel as fast as I can. He projects a nervous energy out of sync with his body, with his speech, and hair trigger irritation at anything he doesn't agree with. This is not the temperament of a winner. It is exactly why conservatives don't trust him. He is not presidential. He does not make you feel safe.

Mitt's temperature is cyclical: It rises, it falls, it rises, which is totally natural, and I'm sick of these Romney-warming alarmists who are perpetuating this hoax on the world. Now, if you'll excuse me, my 5-year-old just spontaneously combusted in the front yaard, and I've got to get the garden hose working.

Compare unguarded photos of Mitch Romney and Donald Trump. Look at their eyes. Read some of their statements. Whether you consider their eyes a positive or a negative they do seem to be very similar.

Taking over Companies with stock options, and then firing everybody, closing them, and then selling them off for profit is ultimate bullying. Republicans think this showed Mitt is a nice guy.

You can be certain that Obama's campaign has been going to school on Romney. They know his weaknesses, his flashpoints, and his record. The President has faced world leaders with far more power and gravitas than Romney. Mitt isn't facing a debate with the sad field of republican losers nor a news conference.

President Obama knows the dynamic. He'll lead Romney out of his comfort zone with a few open-ended questions, pin him down with Mitt's own words and then expose his complete fabrications with Romney's record.

Mitt will be lucky to finish the first debate without melting down. He can't abide a challenge. He get's agitated when the conversation moves from his prepared remarks, and his equivocations and excuses are not going to get by President Obama.

Mitt won't be able to take the heat, but one explosion and he's toast.
