Barney Frank Sounds Off On Retirement, His Sex Scandal With A Hustler, Anthony Weiner, Mitt Romney And More

Posted: 12/01/11 12:02 PM ET

Congressman Barney Frank says his leaving Congress will make it harder to get LGBT rights legislation passed, though he has faith in the openly gay and lesbian legislators to whom he's passing the baton.

In a wide-ranging interview on my radio program on SiriusXM OutQ yesterday, Frank also reflected on his over 30-year tenure, his coming out as gay and the sex scandal that marked the early part of his career, when a male prostitute he'd been involved with -- "this hustler" as Frank called him -- publicly claimed in 1989 that he'd been operating a prostitution ring out of Frank's home. Frank also discussed the Republican presidential candidates as well as his plans after retirement from Congress.

"I have been able to use power I've accumulated, frankly, to be helpful," Frank told me. "I will say, yeah, I'm proud of what I've been able to do and I do think my not being here will make it hard. On the other hand we have other openly LGBT people coming along, and we may have for the first time, an openly lesbian Senator."

Frank was referring to the openly lesbian Wisconsin House Democrat, Tammy Baldwin, who is now running for the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Herb Kohl.

"We're now at the point where I believe we have broken the back of the prejudice, as we've gotten full legal equality in a number of states and we're on the road to winning it all," he said.

Frank recalled the sex scandal that exploded early in his career. "The hustler I'd been involved with decided in go public in September of 89," he said, noting that he survived the scandal -- both a vote to expel him and a censure vote (led by none other than former senator and House member Larry Craig) were defeated -- in part, perhaps, because the media was not as tough as it is today.

Comparing his case to that of former Congressman Anthony Weiner's, Frank said: "His problem was he lied about it and attacked the press. When I had this hustler come forward and talk about what I'd done, he did what is often the case: He said some things that were true, some things that were wildly untrue... As soon as he said he was going to the press I had a press conference and admitted everything. ...In Weiner's case, he lied about it and attacked the press for asking about it. In my case, this it was a male adult whom I had paid for sex. It was entirely consensual. In Weiner's case, what finally brought him down, was the unfortunate revelation that he had been texting with a minor."

On Mitt Romney and the Republican field: "[Romney's] lack of character, the sheer, complete unprincipled nature of the man is driving people away... And now Gingrich is there and it shows, first of all, how unattractive Romney is as a candidate, but secondly, how the Republican primary electorate has become such a hard-edged right-wing operation."

On his plans after retirement: "I am now going to be free to take public policy positions and expect to be doing a lot of TV debates. I expect to be doing lecturing. I expect to write a lot, a couple of books and some articles on the Internet. I believe I will be able to have a significant impact in shaping public policy issues, and that's a tradeoff to not having the governmental power."

He certainly takes using hustlers casually. Is it normal to use hustlers? Should we be proud of it? I was always told hustling is not something one aspires to and those who use hustlers are taking advantage of the individual's bad lot in life. Am I wrong?

Interesting, only the "revelation" was unfortunate about Weiner, very telling.

You know, if Fox News really want to demonstrate "fair and balanced" instead of "Shut up and let me finish"...

well, barney does love his "hustlers"

with the one is question being both a paid love partner

and a live-in boyfriend

what was interesting to me, (and i did hear the full interview on satellite radio) was that although barney kept saying the guy didn't tell truth

he never specifically addressed whether or not he know his "friend" that was living in his house, was also using the home as a place of business for his maleProstitution activities

in fact, he deflected any questions that went in that directions by saying things like "He said some things that were true, some things that were wildly untrue"

(spoken like a true politician)

even thought the interviewer, in what was hardly a hard-hitting interview, did try to get him to say whether he knew at the time what was going on.

still, all that said, even with MANY of barney's policies having been disastrous for our country, and even with him being (at least0 somewhat ethically challenged,

he seems like a good enough, although slightly misguided, guy.

and with the new districting making his re-election a less than certain prospect, and with him knowing that (if the republicans ever got control of the senate) he'd be in BIG trouble, as they would certainly call for an ethics investigation into his past conduct (as a lawmaker), he's probably getting out at just the right time.

as such, i wish him the best, but cant say i will be sorry that he is no longer working as a politician any longer.

If Mr Frank was at all, in any small way, involved with the housing bubble I would just like to say THANK YOU MR FRANK. We had a house built in West Melbourne FL in 2002. 2200 sq ft. 4 bedrooms, master suite, an office (not an extra bedroom) 10 ft ceilings, rounded corners, oversize garage and a trussed back porch. Total cost $157,000. Sold in 2006 for $319,000. Built a home in Missouri where the bubble wasn't as bad. Paid off existing mortgage in FL. Paid cash for new 2300 sq ft house ($217,000) with $50,000 left over for landscaping, 2 extra lots etc. Did I mention 600 ft lake front? God bless you Mr Frank.

I have had horrible things done to me as well............ maybe if the rest of our society did not pursue us relentlessly and drive us into a cave we would not be in such positions. "We" are in EVERY FAMILY, we have been here since humans evolved......... I will spare you all the list of the most famous of our ranks..... ok, just two Leonardo and Michelangelo............ Oh, and current day women? without us to do your hair and tell you how to paint your faces and what to wear? guess how you would look? oh, and without ME to make your WEDDINGS FABULOUS (something you don't want US to have) your flowers would look like, would look like, ............ like they were done by "Flowers by Susie" or some other inane generic shop name, all daisies and carnations and baby's breath.

Unprincipled was not a great choice of words, or he was using it in this meaning...
Willing to use dishonest or unfair methods in order to get what you want.

Forget about the hustler. He was in bed with the GSE's. Perhaps a resurrection of Barney as Mr. Rogers would save his memory in CDO heaven. Let us not forget that LGBT righteousness comes with a clear conscience.

Nice little spin you put on your relationship in the past. Hey, dude....It's your house. You were living in it, sleeping in the same bed with your lover, and running around town in the same social circle within the gay community.
And now you're crying "I didn't know! Just like Mrs. Cain, I, too, was being fooled by my man!"
Yeah....right. Dang liar.

He wasn't perfect. He didn't always vote the way I wanted him to. But he did come out. He did at least try to fight the fight.
AND he's one of the few who doesn't act like he HAS to die in office. Nobody ever said people in government should be there for life. I wish him a long, happy and productive one.

Fortunately, unlikey to be "productive".

I think you need to check the definitions of "productive" and "reproductive." There are thousands of more useful things one can do than overpopulating the world.
05:21 AM on 12/02/2011
"Come out." Everytime I hear that relative to Barney I LOL.

Are you suggesting that Barney isn't blatantly obvious.

No I am not. But I consider myself "blatantly obvious" and I still have people asking me about my "wife" all the time simply because I wear a ring. People see what they want to see. Peope who want to continue the invisibility of gays, feminists, people of color, etc will do anything and OVERLOOK anything to continue pretending there are no competing world views. There is a reason ALL female politicians with power seem to dress and look mannish. They have to show their submission to "the man" before they are granted power. Same for closeted gays and other groups (and Condi).

Thank you, Barney, for the Fannie & Freddie fiasco that you endorsed, supported and created. Because of you, I was able to make a "steal" in buying a foreclosed home for just pennies on the dollar! Thank you, kind sir, for making this possible!

It's amazing how Rep Frank had so much influence over Fannie and Freddie while he was in the minority party. I suppose Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay gave him more power than their own chairman of the finance committee. And up is down, down is up.

Actually, Barney Frank delivered the votes to get what Bill Clinton, Phil Gramm, Chris Dodd and others in the pocket of high finance wanted which was to deregulate the banking system, so they are all to blame. Robert Rueben, or Mr. High Finance, was Treasury Secretary and all of them joined together to bring down the banking system by doing away with regulatory authorities and laws that had very successful in keeping the banking system from killing itself.

Ultimately, it is the cover up not the fact that brings politicians down. Barney Frank had the good sense and character to come clean immediately. It has immunized him from scandal for over 20 years. Even if you do not agree with him, he is a man you can trust.

yea Barney is a great American, NOT, he had a great deal to do with jacking up Fannie & Freddie as proof of his interview on CNBC when he said that both were good going forward, he is the reason there should be term limits

Ah yes, the hand-picked boogeyman of the Republican party. One man out of 12 congressmen from Massachusetts... One man out of 534 members of congress. This one man is solely responsible for the economic collapse. George W Bush who was president and head of the entire executive branch of government, however, had nothing to do with anything.

Typical rightwing nonsense.
