Roland Martin's History on Gays Says It All

Posted: 02/ 7/2012 9:22 am

CNN political analyst Roland Martin laughably claims he was talking about soccer fans -- not gay men -- when he tweeted messages during the Super Bowl which now have the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the National Black Justice Coalition calling for him to be fired.

But a look at Martin's history shows what group he clearly was referring to when he tweeted, "Ain't no real bruhs going to H&M to buy some damn David Beckham underwear!" and "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!"

That's because for a long time Roland Martin has viewed gays as a group that, figuratively speaking, need the "ish" kicked out of them -- as in having a preacher "bowl down your alley."

I'll explain that, but first, let's not forget that this is a man who came to Tracy Morgan's defense when the comedian said he'd kill his own kid if he was gay. Though a Democratic political analyst and supporter of President Obama, Martin's been on the wrong side of gay rights in just about every debate, even saying "thanks" to the Miss USA pageant loser, Carrie Prejean, for coming out against same-sex marriage in 2009.

But most revealing are Martin's comments in a column he wrote in 2006, in which he promoted "pray-away-the-gay" therapy:

My wife, an ordained Baptist minister for 20 years, has counseled many men and women to walk away from the gay lifestyle, and to live a chaste life...For her, the obligation is to her calling as a minister of the Word, rather than bowing to societal pressures. She loves gay and lesbian church members dearly, and prays with them, talks to them, and breaks bread with them. But what she cannot do is compromise the integrity of the teachings of Christ.

Martin then compared homosexuality to alcoholism, one of the "dangers" that must be preached against:

It would be nonsense for the body of Christ to launch a gay and lesbian ministry that is not focused on teaching God's Word - including those that address homosexuality. Preaching about the dangers of becoming drunkard - which Paul wrote about in the Bible - must be taught alongside of Jesus' admonition in Matthew 19 that God has only called a man and woman to marry.

Martin went on to tell gays --whom he views as "captives" of "sin" -- that if they go to a church that is "rooted in the Bible" they should expect to be verbally bashed around a bit by the preacher, who will "bowl down your alley":

..if someone expects to join a church that is rooted in the Bible, then they should be prepared to hear a sermon that might, in the words of the Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III of Dallas' Friendship-West Baptist Church, "bowl down your alley or sit in your pew." The church is called to love our fellow man, preach the good news and set the captives free - free from a life of sin. That isn't being homophobic. It's being a Christian. And no one should have to apologize for that.

In a message earlier in the day on Super Bowel Sunday Martin tweeted, "Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass."

There seems to be a pattern here: smack the ish out, whip dat ass, bowl down your alley, sit in your pew. GLAAD and NBJC say it exposes something ugly and, pointing to Martin's history, that it's time for CNN to show him the door. For too long Martin's gotten away with excuses, while CNN looked the other way. Refraining from suggesting violence against any group -- including soccer players -- isn't much for a news network to ask of its political analysts.

Roland Martin is one of the very few journalists who do not flip flop on his opinions wether it is Gays, Lesbians, Tea Party, etc. No one is going to agree with everything a journalist says but I give kudos to journalists like Martin who does not back down from anything adversarial. The Bible is very clear man should not lye with man and the same for woman. Black people have been struggling for their rights ever since blacks were packed like sardines on ships to America to be slaves for someone else. But you do not see Blacks wanting everyone to be Black in some form or another because they are are looking for social and economical justice. The act of practicing homesexuality acts is a sin. No one packed gays in on a ship to come to America to be practice homesexuality activities. It makes me very angry when a segment of Americans get all up in arms when people speak against their lifestyle. Where here is a hint, I dont see no one up in arms to be a slave. Why? Because it is wrong. It is simple as that. Homesexuality acts are sins in the eyes of God. God does not have favorites. There are no little sins or big sins. Sin is Sin. So whoever has a beef with Roland, go on his show and tell him and see what happens.

The Bible is NOT the Constitution.
12:58 AM on 03/22/2012
Well it should be. Given what is happening in our schools, drug are rampant, and the Bible has been taken out of the classroom and there is no respect either way. The Political process for 2012 is ridiculous. The Bible dosen't denounce gays throughout its teaching. There are a whole lot of other stuff in the Bible to tell us how to treat our fellow man. God didnot say anything about hate crimes for homosexuals nor does it say people can't have homosexual friends. It states that man should not lie with man and the same for a woman. The Bible does not advocate violence toward homosexuals.. It is a sin. And a little note the Supreme Court is doing all it can to get rid of the constitution. So how should people live in a society that you do what you want and when you want. Sin takes you places you dont want to go and keep you there longer than you want. I have a nephew who is gay, I love him but I still tell him the truth and we respect each other viewpoints. Plus, when we have family gatherings, his sexual orientation is not the topic of conversation and he does not try to presuade no one to indulge in his lifestyle.

didn't he once wear an ascot on tv? nothing else to say on this topic.

Roland Martins tweets were about soccer or football as I call it.

1) He hates soccer and every-time he there's something about soccer he will say something negative about it.

2) He was making fun of David Beckham and Piers Morgan who both love soccer, plus Beckham is considered by some world football fans as more of celebrity trying to play football not genuine athlete like pele, zidane, ronaldo (Brazil), messi and co. players that play the game and do less advertising.

3) To people that don't watch world football, or simply hate it, one of the reasons why that don't like it is due to the fact some modern soccer players from 2000 until now dive, play act in the game this is not considered "'Macho"" by other people who watch other sports.

4) Being called a wimp doesn't mean someone is gay cause even straight men can be wimps. Also some gay men are more macho than straight men. Thus lets not quick to jump when Roland says that real men can't wear the Beckham underwear cause it could mean either straight or gay men.

5) It was in private tweets and his jokes should be put in context and if you follow his history about soccer. You realise that he was trying to take a cheap shot soccer and nothing else.
08:24 PM on 02/09/2012
What about the non-soccer related comment about the football player with the pink warm-ups? Just an anti-pink statement? Maybe he should be apologizing to the Komen Foundation. It would be fun to actually watch pudgy try to 'slap the ish' out of a football player - I'm guessing he wouldn't come out of it looking particularly macho.
Forget about whatever aspersions he may or may not have cast on one group or another - how about maintaining his dignity and credibility as an alleged journalist? If I ran CNN I'd fire him for 'tweeting' anything. Real men may tweet, but real journalists are too smart to cram their well crafted, duly considered statements into 140 characters, for consumption by a pack of pea-brains.

that is a flat out lie. The Bible is the inspiration of God handed down to man to write so we will not become a Godless society. If people would read the Bible there is a magnitude of things you can learn. Jesus is the living son of God. Everything he did while He was on earth was at the will of the Father (God). You people should stop messing with God's Holy Word, you dont know what you are talking about and you sure do not know the consequences of misrepresenting God's Word.

Hi
CNN is over stepping the rights of an individual no matter Roland is their employee but he has the right to express his feelings and opinions on anything if he is not at work. CNN's gagging bill on freedom of speech and opinions for her employees cannot be accepted as right when workers are having fun or speaking at family or funeral functions during their private time. Is CNN going to police what the workers say within the confines of their own homes, say, during a family reunion or birthday parties? So what wrong did Roland commit by tweeting out his views and referring to his wife's love for gays but shunning their behavior?Since he is not condemning anyone but is using biblical inferences,he can only be opposed or advised otherwise, but not punished as is the case. Does he really deserve a suspension from his job, certainly not. CNN needs to revise its laws on the abuse of human rights, urgently. This is America, CNN,you can do better!!!!

You need to take a civics course, like 85% of this country. Sad that so many have no clue what the very FIRST amendment to the Constitution grants us.

Are there any quotes that you have on his state gay marriage stance. That would be more convincing than his talking about what happens in the church. Church and State are different. Everyone knows what is going on some churches.

You have bad and good everywhere including the churches. because there are bad people in church does not make the Bible wrong; it is there interpretation of it. Just like we vote in this politicians and they turn out to be crooked, want to get rich, and leave us 99% in the dust.

Appalled at the number of people who don't understand that, as a highly-paid TV pundit, Roland Martin has a contract that stipulates he cannot create negative publicity for CNN, his employer. This includes sending out vicious anti-gay tweets even on his own time off the clock.

THANK YOU. This was a business decision by CNN.

At least Roland Martin never back down from his viewpoint. Yes he may apologize for offending a segmant of our population but he will always have his opinion like Limbaugh and Gingrich. No one is trying to stop you from voting or redistricting your community. President Obama has been called everything but a child of God and he still on the job. No one has called you half ape or your mother most have laid down with a dog. Get a clue. The GOP doesnt care about you they want this to be a forefront issue so you can go and vote for them. I bet if you could catch either one of them off camera you might here something that might jolt you into reality. YOur lifestyle is not going the crush this country but crooked politicians will.

But He will chatiste you when you are wrong, He is a just God who do not play favorites if you are sinning you will be dealt with according to God's Holy Word. That is who you need to be worried about. Not a reporter, fake christians because one day we all will have to give an account of our sins. God does not discriminate. only man and man cannot save you or give you eternal life. remember we all stand before God one on one. No one will be there to help you explain why you disobeyed God and that is if you even make it that far.

Thanks Michelangelo, you are able to bring sensible, even-headed thought to many situations, including this one.

I never heard of Roland Martin before this. If his wife is an ordained Baptist Minister, there are many people who still believe she is overstepping her WOMANLY duties by exercising authority over men.

One little known facet of the christian myth is that Jesus and the disciples repeatedly write about loving those who are the most difficult to love -- through an outpouring and open exhibition of love, all non-believers should be drawn to god: not through vilification or insult or condemnation.

of context. Well, there is no context there now to be mistaken, eh?

You dont know what you are talking about. The Bible says a woman can teach the gospel. It was a women who gave birth to Jesus. It was women who stayed at the foot of the cross when Jesus was crucified. Loving someone does not mean you have to agree with their lifestyle. All now believers will not be drawn to God if they don't want to. It is our jobs as believers to spread his word not to make someone become a Christian if he/she doesnt want too. As I tell everyone, dont believe me read God's word. God doesnt want a bunch of non-believers. he had to throw satan out of heaven because satan went too far.

Hey Roland....the whites in the South used the Bible to justify enslaving African Americans, they used it to make biracial marriage illegal too. In fact the Bible does allow slave keeping if the slaves are Jews. So...I suppose you think those same exact biblical arguments you're using against gay marriage are still valid...but no, they aren't.

People who choose to be in a relationship with same the gender is their persona business. We should respect all people, however; we do not all have to agree that this life style is acceptable for everyone. Sometimes I think people can be too sensitive. Roland Martin did not set out to harm anyone. This was taken out of context, and he should have NEVER been suspended.

Really, I suppose in the 60's when Black Jokes were allowed on TV, black faced whites acting like fools eating watermelon and fried chicken...you would have thought to say "Sometimes I think people can be too sensitive"? It matters Tramise, it did then and it does today. Imus got what he deserved and now Martin is getting his. What shocks me as a Black Woman..You can't see it!
08:03 AM on 02/09/2012
As a woman, irrespective to my COLOR, I don't have to agree with all life styles. You are doing exactly what I feel others do, BLACK PEOPLE included, take things out of context. I can respect personal decisions, I don't have to personally agree with them. I have a great mixture of people in my diverse family, I continue to stand for my beliefs. I will agree that Ronald's comments invoked pain in a select community, for that I feel saddened. I do not believe he meant any harm, and irrespective to how you feel, I stick by my comment. Most people talk a certain way in private, his mistake is taking it public. He is a public figure, therefore; he is not afforded the same privilege of shooting the breeze with his buddies. I asked several men, and they all talk the same way. Hopefully from this interaction more people will have honest discussions, like you and I. I apologize if you were offended, as you can see, I showed my face because I am not ashamed of having an opinion. Blessings...

Asking a gay man to 'walk away fromthe gay life,' is like asking Roland Martin to walk away from 'the black life.'

Personally, I find his tweets Sunday to not just be offensive, but a call to anti-gay violence.

For that reason, he needs to be fired. Forgiveness is not an option.
