C'mon And Marry Me, Bill

Posted: 04/14/2012 12:04 pm

"Billlllllllll, I love you so, I always will ... "

So began "Wedding Bell Blues," the song that everyone seems to recognize but nobody seems to know was written by Laura Nyro, the singer-songwriter who emerged from the streets of New York in the late 1960s and will be enshrined at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Saturday night.

Most people are familiar with the version of the song by The 5th Dimension, which was a number one hit in 1969. Nyro had put out her own recording of it several years before -- it was her first single, and she was just 18 years old -- which had been a hit in a few U.S. regions (including L.A., where I was growing up and hopefully into the sort of womanhood Nyro was celebrating). Throughout her career, Nyro as a performer and album-maker would be adored only by a smallish cult of fans, while covers of her compositions would sell millions.

"Eli's Comin'" by Three Dog Night; "And When I Die" by Blood Sweat & Tears; "Stoney End" by Barbra Streisand; "Stoned Soul Picnic" by The 5th Dimension. You've probably heard some are all of those songs on the radio. Nyro wrote 'em.

But back to "Wedding Bell Blues," which some people think is called "Bill" because of that opening wail. It wasn't just a hit: It became a pre-Internet meme. Need a headline for an article about problems planning your wedding or hoping that the guy you're pining after proposes to you? Headline it "Wedding Bell Blues."

It's also been the title of at least three novels, one film and about two dozen TV series' episodes. And it's been performed -- straight or in parody -- on such shows as Ally McBeal, Glee and The Simpsons.

Nyro herself was briefly married -- to a man named David. She kept her legal married name, Bianchini, as a sort of hide-out, never using it professionally but giving it to her son Gil, whom she later had with another man after she'd split from David.

On Saturday night, Bette Midler will induct Laura into the very testosterone-filled Hall -- she's the only woman among the major inductees this year. Hopefully Midler will sing at least a few bars of Nyro's famed song of marital longing, which ended with the lyrics "C'mon and marry me, Bill, I got the wedding bell blues."

And hopefully those who never have heard Nyro sing the song herself will check out the original -- which can be found on her album The First Songs. From that matrimonial jumping-off point, there's the rest of Laura Nyro's still-resonant, still-remarkable body of work to be discovered.

Laura Nyro was and is one of the most important women in my life. She raised me up from a budding 12 year old who had a great deal of passion inside. I first played her muse on a turntable. I saw her dark mysterious ethnicity. I was completely confused and enlightened a bit scared of how I felt when I listened. Through her muse, I learned to respect the way I felt as a little woman, but a woman just the same. I learned poetry, and passion, and frenzy, and distinction of what it was like to love something. I listened and aimed my ears towards her albums over and over again, and now in my 50s its like opening up that album for the first time, each time. Who can do that? No one else but Nyro.

Thank you. She was not only a gifted songwriter, but a talented singer as well. Hopefully, this induction
will give her some of the recognition she deserves.

Since Childhood, I've Loved "Wedding Bell Blues", "Eli's comin'", "Stony End". and especially, "Stoned Soul Picnic" as performed by The 5th Dimension, Three Dog Night, and Barbara Streisand - then recently, I heard Laura Nyro's original versions for the first time.... To say I was blown away, is a huge understatement - now I never listen to the covers anymore, Laura Nyro's is the ONLY voice I want to hear singing those awesome songs - and I Love her album cuts that weren't covered just as much! Congratulations to the Beautiful Angel in the Dark, I'm SO thrilled you're in the RARHOF!

Thanks for this article. I never pay attention to who writes a song, only who sings it and whether it is a good song or not. When you listed the songs I was flabbergasted. I always considered the best records ever recorded by the Fifth Dimension to be guess what ? "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Stoned Soul Picnic." I still have the album with those two songs grooved out. Hehe ! Then you listed "Eli's Coming" by Three Dog Night . Which I thought was their best recording. "And When I Die" by Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Which was beyond question their best recording. And "Stoney End" which was a sensational record by Barbra Streisand. WOW , WOW, WOW, WOW, and WOW !!!!!! 5 home runs . Hell, she might have made the careers of every one of those people worth remembering all by herself. I, of course, heard her name throughout the 60's but she was always someone I never ever saw in performance anywhere. So, thank God she is being recognized for making the 60's memorable all by herself. With a little help from the Beatles of course.

I was lucky to have seen Laura on July 8, 1988 and again on September 11, 1993, both times at the Bottom Line. I know those were the dates because I still have the ticket stubs.

Gone too soon.

Ahhh but the piece de resistance would be New York Tendaberry..... Seeing Laura Nyro in 1970 at the Fillmore East 2 days before Christmas was an incredible time. This was after she released Christmas and the Beads of Sweat but before her collection of soul classics with La Belle. However she previewed it by doing a few medleys of those soul classics all by herself. A young Jackson Browne opened the show, which was before he released his first album. It was like a dream.

I enjoyed reading your book, Michele, even the parts that exposed Laura's tendency to disregard most of the sound professional advice offered to her, resulting in some awful career decisions. (The agony associated with getting her last album of original songs released was pure heartbreak!)

There has been much web grumbling over the years regarding Laura Nyro's exclusion from the R&R hall Of Fame. "She's POP, not R&R." "Not well known." "Never worked in the Brill Building." Nice that they finally woke up in Cleveland, but in my opinion, for what it's worth: her songs and recordings are in a class by themselves; she deserves her own Hall Of Fame! Maybe in The Bronx; I'd go!

The German man who fled after being asked for more sex really ran away because she was playing that song. What an utter skin crawling sensation that is! Even Viagra cannot conquer its effects.

Inducting Ms. Nyro into the R&R Hall of Fame was long overdue. My favorite song of hers is "Stoned Soul Picnic", and love both recorded versions.

She was very underrated as an influential singer, songwriter and musician, and even though being in the RRHF shouldn't have to validate the success of anyone in the music business since the talent will always speak for itself, it's still nice to see her get the recognition she deserves.

This is SOOOO overdue! L:aura Nyro was a phenomenon unique. I have the greatest admiriation for her as an artist, but gaww--- da--- could she rock too !

Try listening to "Last Call for the Poverty Train" and see if you don't shiver.
