In last evening's vice presidential debate Sarah Palin salvaged her candidacy, but did little for the McCain ticket. This debate became all about her establishing herself as a legitimate candidate for the position. Expectations were excessively low and she performed very well invoking a folksy demeanor to distract from the issues, connect to the middle class, and sell her credentials. She literally pounded her chest as the most popular, experienced Governor of this nation.
No chest pounding necessary for Joe Biden. He is the real deal. This was the debate of his career. He was cool, calm, concise and to the point. His depth of knowledge spanned across issues from the economy to foreign affairs. He did not have to invoke a folksy demeanor because he comes from the real Main Streets of this country. And yes, Joe knows what it's like to be a single parent with children who have been hurt in an accident that killed their mother. It was not all about him, but rather the pathway to the White House for the Obama team.
The bottom line is that Governor Palin and John McCain seem to be fighting the wrong war. They seem ill prepared to face the issues for the American people at home right now: economy, health care, and climate change.
We need to stabilize the economy at home. We need to stem the hemorrhaging of our financial institutions. We need tax relief to the middle class. We need affordable gasoline and electricity. We need to invest in alternative fuels. We need jobs. We need to put money back into the pockets of the American people before embarking on anymore forays into foreign wars.
Who do we want guiding our ship? You decide.
