The Straight Scoop on Caroline Kennedy

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Caroline Kennedy wants to be the junior Senator from New York. We all know that. But has anyone really thought about the straight scoop for just one moment? It's pretty clear to this gal that just maybe she wants to carry on the legacy of her dear Uncle Ted - the Lion of the Senate.

Let's face it folks. Ted is very, very sick. It was testimony to his enormous courage that he spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Face it, this is her chance to stand beside him in the US Senate, learn at his knee and carry his mantle for years to come. Timing in this life is everything. There's a vacant seat coming up, it's her home turf and her Uncle has limited time to continue his march.

Media: let's not stir up the dynasty polemic of the Kennedys and the Clintons. Former President Clinton is doing fine. Thank you very much. And Senator Clinton is living large as the nominee for Secretary of State. So why stir the pot of discontent.

Perhaps it's time for us all to take a giant step back and applaud the Lion's niece and her noble attempt to step up into his shoes. Bravo Caroline for your bold move into the headlights. It is not an easy choice.

This isn't about the Clinton's and there are more people in New York than just the Kennedy family. There are many ways to honor a legacy. Name a school after Ted Kennedy. Build a library. Start a charitable foundation.

But his illness is not a reason to pass over so many qualified, committed, passionate public servants to give someone who would never otherwise be considered a senatorial seat. This is not an aristocracy and we do not give senate seats to relatives of people who've served this country as a reward.

There are soldiers dying in Afghanistan and Iraq. Are their widows and widowers going to receive senate seats? Will their children be made automatic congressmen and women when they become of age? No. Of course not.

The loss of a family member is a difficult thing to bear. But a senate seat is not a condolence card.
