'Fake Prom' Parents: Despicable

Posted: 04/08/10 07:08 PM ET

2010-04-08-25466_405687823141_507378141_4981390_6488458_n300x225.jpg

To the parents of Itawamba, MS high school who were involved in the "fake prom" hoax, I just want to say that I hope you rot in hell.

The energy and time that went into the planning and execution of creating a 'fake' prom for just seven students AND setting up a "real" prom at another location -- is nothing short of pure evil.

As a parent of of a child who was bullied, I was physically sick when I read the latest news about Constance McMillen. My beautiful, funny and brave daughter was bullied so severely, it has taken years just to get her to smile again. My daughter is tough and she is healing. But as a mother, I cannot fathom being part of a cruel hoax like the "fake prom"!

Thankfully, Constance McMillen has class and more character than all of the Itawamba bullies combined. My fellow Huffington Post contributor Candace Gingrich writes:

When asked about whether the students enjoyed the prom she told The Advocate "They had the time of their lives," McMillen says. "That's the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn't have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom]."

It is ironic that the news of the "fake prom" comes on the heels of nine teens being charged with stalking, criminal harassment and violating Phoebe Prince's civil rights after 15-year old Phoebe committed suicide due to bullying. How many children have to be hurt or die?

Obviously, the normal standards of human decency do not apply to the parents who helped create a "fake prom." It's clear that these adults do not know right from wrong.

So I'll wrap up with a quote from Edmund Burke:

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

The world is watching you, Itawamba parents.

The saddest part of this story is these horrible people probably think they are clever. I've been an outsider all my life. Once upon a time, I hated those who tormented outsiders.

Now I pity them. They don't know the myriad wonderful people they are missing out on. They don't know how much brighter life is when you're not consumed by fear of the Other.

I could see this happening in my own town. Self absorbed, over achieving parents raising self absorbed children.

Ms. Lamar, when I was a closeted gay man in college, I began dating a woman who was very popular on campus.

At a party, a friend of this woman came up to me and we began talking. After a few minutes he said, "Hey, I hope you don't mind me saying, but I thought you were gay."

I said, "Why would you think that?"

He responded by saying, "Well, you're just a really nice guy."

That straight man's indictment of his fellow heterosexuals never made since to me...until now.

It's appalling that the "family values" folks are endorsing cruelty, indeed.

This kind of behavior is being encouraged by these anti-gay bans throughout the country. Bigots are emboldened by government-sanctioned discrimination.

Make no mistake about it. This is a direct result of the meanspirited hate campaigns such as that of Prop 8.

"People hate gay people because the government tells them to." - Larry Kramer

The government is not telling people to hate gays. Resisting normalizing homosexuality culturally is not in itself hateful, either, even if gays hate it. It's pretty presumptuous for Larry Kramer to believe he can look into people's hearts.

Your persistence in denying the hate behind the anti-gay movement never ceases to amaze me. Moving on.

"Your (and every other liberal's on HP) persistence in imputing hate to disagreement evokes in me little more than the blandest of ennuis anymore.

Happy trails, Peter."

Your denying hate is not a primary factor in the culture war against gay people is simply unbelievable, especially in light of this story and Ms. Lamar's piece.

You simply CHOOSE to ignore it and deny it because you are not on the receiving end of it.

Again, your callous dismissal speaks volumes about your true attitudes towards gay people.

one thing that galls me -(and the press does not seem to have reported yet) is that the "secret prom" used the theme and decorations and such from the real prom. the defense that this was a "private" prom was already a sham, but its so in-your-face i can't believe it. i summarized what i saw here: http://milowent.blogspot.com/2010/04/itawamba-private-prom-was-continuation.html

I really don't understand why someone's sexual orientation is anyone's business but their own. So what if there was a girl with another girl at a prom? It won't cause the earth to shatter into oblivion, or demons from hell to ascend and take away their children to rot in hell for eternity.

Its sad its even an issue. This is just another case of people trying to deliberately force their beliefs on others, and in one of the most vulgar ways. The poor girl already has enough to deal with emotionally, simply being of a different sexual orientation than everyone there so why add more? Its not like its going to make her any less homosexual. Do they think someone really chooses to be homosexual? A person deliberately chooses a lifestyle where you are constantly ridiculed and and judged based on who you are attracted to, I seriously doubt it although I cannot vouch for it because I'm not homosexual.

I'm just a rational human being who believes people are equals, it's a shame that this isn't always true.

I would like somebody to clear something up for me....

These parents and school officials who set up and lured these kids to this fake prom....they claim to be Christians correct? Certainly in the group of children who attended the non-fake prom there are parents employed by the school, parents who serve as officers and deacons or more in local churches.

If this is an example of the Christian faith in practice and its principals then I want no part of it. My word what a horrible example of discrimination, pettiness and spite to have displayed to ones children.

Apparently for them the Bible reads....and the meek shall inherit a fake prom and malicious acts.

For a child and teenager I thought Christianity and school were there to inspire and lift up...not to marginalize, belittle and tear down.

Shame on you...shame an you all. I hope the stain of what you conspired to do and did never washes from your hands and your soul.

Christian = Christ-like

Even at Christ's Last Supper he invited his deniers and his betrayer.

I have been kept up at night since learning about this story. I too felt physically ill and enraged. I am usually someone who cannot stand to see people suffering or in pain, yet I cannot help but wish the parents and students (who don't get off the hook just because they are teenagers) debilitating humiliation and shame. I hope they are harassed and hounded by the media and that this will follow each and every one of them wherever they go so that when it comes time for them to go to college or get a job and people find out they were part of this prank, they will be shunned and mocked. I guess in a way it makes me no better than them, but when you get an entire town to turn against ONE girl and to go through that much trouble just to make her feel awful, well, they deserve every bad thing to come their way.

These parents did worse than nothing -- as did these kids. I was bullied a good deal. I have been very glad every time I've ever heard about ill befalling any of 'em. One fell ill and d-ed. I was happy to hear of it. Her kids are better off imo. She was a miserable person and she hadn't changed a bit at the one reunion I attended. My mother tried to express disapproval at my feelings but I don't care. I didn't get any pound of flesh so this will have to suffice.

I'm sorry that you were bullied (as was I) but I think that you need to go talk to a psychiatrist, because it's too dangerous for you to hold such grudges. When a person who bullied you dies you shouldn't feel happy about it...

I think it's fake to be afraid to tell the truth about someone who happens to be gone. Some other people can feel sympathy toward that woman. I don't. No one will make me. I don't see how a therapist does squat since I think my view is just. I don't sweat it. I have rarely thought about her except for writings like this that remind me of the past.

Do a search on Itawamba Agricultural High School , the principal's name is Trae Wiygul, and his email address is available on the main page:

Itwiygul@itawamba.k12.ms.us

I am sure he would like to hear from everyone.
07:00 PM on 04/08/2010
The filter isn't letting me post the email but it is the person's first initial and last name followed by the symbol for "at" and then itawamba.k12.ms.us

Exuse me but how is hating the parents and school going to solve anything? It is hypocriticla to condemn the parents and school and preach against hate. I cant explain why the other students were there but tplease give benefit of the doubt before judigng.

Hating the parents does not solve anything but I have a hard time believing that something like this could be pulled off by just teens.

Benefit of what doubt? That those parents might NOT have been motivated by hate? Please.

Adults are supposed to be more mature than the kids, but these parents are playing right into the "Mean Girls" approach to raising their kids to realize that they live in a world full of many people different from them.

I think a prominent media person [someone like Matt Damon or Beyonce] should set up some sort of promotion and invite the whole town to join in. When the town shows up wait 10 minutes past the start time then announce the fake while Constance and her other fake prom goers are having a party with said celebrity. Then make sure the photos of the party are published.

Or even better....................................... Ashton, have you ever Punked almost 100% of a town at once?

The people who joined in deserve it.

The only reason I say "almost 100%" is because Constance and everyone who didn't know about the fake prom can be at the real event.
01:56 PM on 04/09/2010
i guess one doesn't come to hp for wisdom. why would you encourage the same behaviour you condemn?
