Unless Democrats pull off a "Truman beats Dewey" upset ala 1948, most insider pundits are predicting that Republicans will take over the House on Tuesday, making John Boehner "Speaker of the House", and they will perhaps take over the Senate making Mitch McConnell "Majority Leader". The prospect of Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader McConnell fills my heart with dread.
Huffington Post readers know that I have often been critical of Barack Obama's presidency. But from now through Tuesday, it's time to put those criticisms aside. It's time for all of us to dig down deep and do everything in our power to help Democrats pull off a 9th inning come-from-behind upset victory on Tuesday.
Even if you're disappointed in Obama and the Democrats and considering not voting, man-up, woman-up, grow up, and get yourself and everyone you know to the polls on Tuesday to prevent a Republican victory.
The outcome of the election will be decided on turnout. If Republicans and Tea Partiers show up at the polls and disappointed progressives, liberals and Democrats stay home in large numbers, then the pundits will be right and the Republicans will sweep back into power. Do you really think that if you don't do everything you can to prevent this, you'll wake up Wednesday morning anything but more depressed?
Do not believe for a minute that, whatever the shortcomings of Obama and the Congressional Democrats, it doesn't matter if Republicans pull off their predicted victories on Tuesday. If they do, Wednesday morning the country and the world will be far worse off. There will likely be a double-dip recession -- if not a depression or at the best a Japan-style "lost decade" -- as Republicans slash government spending at the very moment it's most needed to stimulate the economy and create jobs. More people will be unemployed and more of the unemployed will lose their benefits faster. The richest 1% will keep their tax cuts, blowing a $700 billion hole in the deficit, leading to cuts in Social Security and Medicare to pay for it. Special interest lobbyists will have the run of Congress. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will remain the law of the land.
The nomination of even moderate judges to the federal bench will be blocked. The pundit class will call on Obama to seek bipartisan compromise with the Republicans and to prove to Wall Street that he's more pro-business, and he will probably listen (this despite Obama's failure to take on Wall Street and do enough to protect the middle class having been a principal cause of the revival of Republicans who have no interest in bipartisan compromise and want only to destroy him). Having proven their success, the wealthiest Americans and the biggest corporate special interests will gear up to dump even more secret billions into the next election to buy the seats they didn't buy this time. The Tea Party will be even energized to keep stomping heads. Progressives will be even more de-energized and demoralized. I could go on for pages with the parade of horribles.
We have 4 days left to shock the pundits and pull victory from the jaws of defeat. Don't dare not vote to prevent a reactionary Republican victory. And don't dare not bring everyone you know -- your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, spouses and significant others, and ex-spouses and ex-significant others -- with you to the polls.

Tuesday, November 2nd is not only Election Day but my Birthday. The most horrifying Birthday present I can imagine is Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader McConnell. It would be like Halloween never ended. Don't let it happen, or you'll hate yourself in the morning.
