My name is Milt Bedingfield. I am an Exercise Physiologist and Certified Diabetes Educator living in Tampa, Florida. I have a Master's degree from the University of South Florida in Exercise Physiology and re-certify as a Certified Diabetes Educator every 5 years. For the past 18 years I have been teaching people about diabetes at The Diabetes and Endocrinology Institute at University Community Hospital in Tampa, FL. Although I never planned on this as a profession (I originally wanted to do research involving exercise in a lab or work with athletes) I have grown to be passionate about what I do.

For whatever reason, I seem to have developed a knack for explaining the pathophysiology of diabetes to my patients in a way they find entertaining and can easily understand. The same is true for explaining why regular exercise is so very important for them in managing their disease.

I judge the success of each class I teach by how much I can make them laugh, how much I can get them to interact with me and ask questions, and how many tell me after class that they finally understand what is wrong with them and what having diabetes is all about. Over the years I have sat through too many technical lectures or presentations where I did not understand what the presenter was talking about and became bored to tears. I never want my patients to have to go through that in my classes.

Last April I completed my first book entitled, Prescription for Type 2 Diabetes: Exercise.

It is a written version of the way I teach and what I teach my diabetes classes.
I also have a web site at www.TheExerciseDiabetesLink.com. with more diabetes information and instructions as to how to purchase my book.

Personally, I am married and have a large family of four young girls, the oldest being 14, a four year old son, two dogs, three cats, a rabbit, a tortoise, two turtles and several fish. My kids are involved in softball, horseback riding and taking care of stray animals. As for my wife and I we both used to be very physically active however with work and all of the kid's activities have less time to pursue our other hobbies. We do, however, get a lot of pleasure participating and watching our kid’s activities.

Let's say I go to the bank to withdraw $100. The teller asks me if I want five $20 bills, three $20 bills and four $10 bills, or a $50, a $20, two $10 and two $5 bills?

I always politely tell them it doesn't matter, because five $20 bills...

My brother never had Type 2 diabetes, but he did have several other problems that were arguably just as serious. My brother went to a bar mitzvah when he was 14 years old. He was served some wine at the post bar mitzvah celebration, and a day later told me...

Get Rid of Those Post-Halloween Reminders

(0) Comments | Posted November 8, 2011 | 10:04 AM

Halloween has come and gone, but there are many, many less than subtle reminders out there of that scary day that are unfortunately likely to linger for days, maybe even weeks to come. Of course I am referring to the many pieces of Halloween candy collected by your little trick-or-treaters...

Years ago, actually, many, many years ago, I used to get out in the yard with my dad and we would do yard work together, pretty much every Saturday. I remember those days well, and I learned a lot from my dad over the years. Back then as I learned...

How Much Would You Be Willing to Pay for Diabetes Classes?

(22) Comments | Posted October 4, 2011 | 6:24 PM

How much would you be willing to pay for diabetes classes? Let me rephrase that. How much is diabetes education worth?

How about $40,000? Not too many years ago that was considered about the going rate for open-heart surgery. Fortunately, your health insurance would usually pay for a good chunk...

Prevent Pre-Diabetes From Becoming Type 2 Diabetes

(51) Comments | Posted October 2, 2011 | 9:23 AM

Depending on whose statistics you are looking at, there are almost three times as many people with pre-diabetes as those with Type 2 diabetes.

The general concensus is that there are about 26 million people with Type 2 diabetes, approximately 19 million that know it and another 6-7 million that...

Exercise More to Eat More?

(1) Comments | Posted July 6, 2011 | 11:29 AM

It's a good thing I can remember things well, because what I am about to tell you happened more than 10 years ago. At the time it happened, I never imagined the occurrence would be so significant. I never imagined I would someday write about it.

Years ago, a lot...

Opinions on Type 2 Diabetes

Since I started writing articles for the Huffington Post about diabetes, and how diet and exercise impact the development of the disease, my pieces have received some pretty spirited comments. I really like it when I receive comments on my articles because it means people are reading them and that...

How to Make Blood Sugar Checks Pain-Free

(2) Comments | Posted April 27, 2011 | 10:56 PM

Checking your blood sugar should not be painful -- at all. It should not hurt and it should not leave a mark on your finger. In fact, I tell my patients that when they gently (that's a hint) place the lancing device next to their finger and press the trigger,...

How Do You Reduce, Improve or Eliminate Insulin Resistance?

(13) Comments | Posted April 21, 2011 | 3:56 PM

In recent articles I have referred to insulin resistance and how it leads to type 2 diabetes about 80 percent of the time. There are two known causes of insulin resistance: being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle. There is no clear evidence that one of these conditions is more...

The Key to Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

(242) Comments | Posted March 26, 2011 | 11:52 AM

It is estimated that approximately 57 million people have prediabetes. To me, one million sounds like a lot, I can't even begin to fathom a number as big as 57 million. This enormously, huge number is twice the number of people that already have diabetes, estimated to be 26 million....

The Case Against Goodie Bags

(1) Comments | Posted February 14, 2011 | 8:44 AM

I am quite confident that if I were to confiscate all of the candy my kids have received at birthday parties in goodie bags I would have enough to feed trick-or-treaters for years to come. Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it seems my kids are...
