How Whitney Saved My Life

Posted: 02/13/2012 2:00 pm

Whitney Houston came into my life one cold, gray day in January, 1993. I was a mother of two young children, and had relocated across the country, to a brand new city, for my husband's work. I didn't know a soul. And then, I learned that my husband of 12 years was having an affair and wanted out of our marriage.

Within days, my life began to ricochet like an off-kilter pinball, skidding down the track at breakneck speed. I found myself flailing, trying to make sense of my new reality and fighting off the inevitable. Yep, I was falling apart and incredibly afraid. Afraid of divorce. Afraid of being on my own. Afraid of the unknown and the inevitable. I was searching for answers, solutions, support. I was searching, too, for solace.

And I found it in music. Most of all, I found it in Whitney.

Far from family and friends, Whitney Houston's music became my lifeline, my reason to keep going. I hadn't even seen the film "The Bodyguard"; after all, with little kids in tow, it's hard to get out of the house, especially without a support system in place. So, when things started to go wrong, I did what came natural. I put the kids in their car seats, and took off for long drives. I needed to feel the wind on my face, the motion of the car, and, most of all, I needed a place where I could think.

And, as we'd drive away, I'd turn on the car radio. I can't remember the first time I heard Whitney's rendition of "I Will Always Love You" but, as soon as I did, I was hooked. The passion and beauty in her voice mesmerized me. The range of feelings she'd emote made me believe she understood the agony of love.

"I Will Always Love You" was an instant hit -- a song played on the radio practically nonstop. I'm sure, anyone around then remembers what a sensation it was, breaking records on the Billboard chart and winning countless awards -- the People's Choice, the Soul Train Music Awards, the MTV Movie Awards, the Billboard Music Awards and, of course, the Grammy Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance in the Female category.

I, of course, couldn't get enough of Whitney and her signature song. Luckily, whenever I'd start fiddling with the radio dial, it didn't take long to find a station that was playing it. Time would stop for me as I listened to Whitney give her all and sing her heart out about bittersweet memories and saying goodbye. It was as if she was singing my story, helping to empower me and give me the fortitude I needed to get through the crisis that was my life. Her impassioned singing and bravura gave me a way to put closure on one chapter and open myself to the next one. In Whitney, I found the strength and will to go on and face my situation head on.

I eventually purchased the "The Bodyguard" soundtrack so I could listen to Whitney all the time. I love this album but my favorite songs, hands-down, remain the ones Whitney sings, including "I Have Nothing," "I'm Every Woman," "Run To You," and "Queen of the Night." Amazing songs sung by a stellar voice. A voice that gave me the courage to deal with my divorce. A voice that in time helped me to heal. A voice that has now been snuffed before its time. Much too soon.

Thank you, Whitney, for the gift you gave to me and to the millions of people all over the world who were uplifted by your exceptional talent. You gave voice to our emotions and for that, you will always be loved.

I think there is something magical about her voice. We sang 'Greatest Love of All' at my school in kindergarten as a kind of a weekly affirmation, almost like a prayer.

I remembered getting up at 4:00 A.M to exercise back in the 80's, and my inspiration was Whitney songs. Laying there on the floor doing sit up's and collapsing with with exhaustion on my back, an then a love song will play, that made you just lost yourself into that sweet sound, until you didn't want to get up at all to go to work, but only to wake up your spouse to make love.

Music, powerful music by any woman, has the ability to get me through the rough times. Women like Whitney, Alicia , Sade, MJB, speak to my soul in hard times. Whitney has touched so many people, and it's sad to know that she is no longer with us. We fans are blessed, we have her music, and it will live on forever! Thank you Whitney for gracing us with your beautiful voice, may you rest in peace. Thanks for sharing your story!!

Interesting post. I was thinking of almost the exact, same thing. My life fell completely apart when "Greatest Love of All" came out. I was so lost and distraught. I bought her 'cassette tape' and cried as I drove 800 miles home to start my life over again. I will always remember you, Whitney. Sorry that we couldn't have helped you back, Whitney. Hope you're in peace now.

The song 'I Will Always Love You' as performed by Whitney Houston actually gives me a pleasurable physical sensation on my lower back each and every time I hear it. And, I must have heard it at least a few hundred times since it's debut.

As a former music student and former student musician for over 10 years of my early life, this is simply an honest testament to my body's sense of her great and wonderful gift of musical purity.

As complex as this sounds, it's really quite simple. In a world with an oversupply of performers, this was a singer with truly rare natural talent.

Rather than to feel denied for her misfortunes and for her demise, I feel fortunate for having experienced her presence

Something I find so sad is if Whitney had not gone down the path of addiction the way she did, I have the feeling she would have been one of those women who aged gracefully anf beautifully. Her talent & beauty would have grown with her. Such a shame, her life was too short.

Actually its a problem for many in this business.. a symptom of aging is very unkind to people of public life. We as fans prize them not just for the music but for the look.. That they must stay ageless and perfect as they were when they started. Humanly of course that isn't gonna happen.. And we throw them to the dogs if they can't fight age and decline. This was her biggest fear. She has aged, she has lost her singing voice to hoarsness and drugs and drinking took its toll on her body as well and caused much misery in her persona. The demands of the artist are great unfairly so. I think she feared she could not reinvent herself.

Whitney's music had a huge impact on my life. When I heard she'd passed I was speachless. Yes, she had issues, but haven't we all? Her voice was magical. Her passion for music was infectious. May we all remember her glory and also see her difficulties as growing moments for all of us.

Whitney has saved many people lives, and brought joy and happiness too!

I hope you have since moved on and found someone new. I hope your kids are healthy, happy, and sane (since divorce can effect the sanity part). I agree. I love her version of that song. She had a beautiful big voice and I get lost in that song as well (I'm 31). It sounds like you would also like her song "It's not right, but that's okay" that's on the heartbreak hotel album.

Thank you, Ms. Medina, for sharing your story. In 1986 when I realized my marriage was over I, too, turned to one of Whitney Houston's songs, "The Greatest Love of All" to help me re-build a sense of self and to find the courage to leave a devastating personal situation. She will always hold a special place in my heart for that great gift.

Funny how songs help you when you need help. The song, I will survive , helped me at a time I needed that encouragment. We used to hear great new music all the time on the radio until greed and power destroyed it and gave us hate radio. Radio used to be such a comfort..........

If we loved our celebrities for real we would give them space to be real people rather then the idols we think they should be in youth and dottering with age. Appreciate them when they get older and sound less pristine and have guts rather then tight abbs.. wringles rather then manican stiff skin.. grey hair rather then dyed to perfection for the audience. We should let them evolve with that maturity and grandness that comes with a long life in that profession rather then try to hold them to a model of their younger selves. Perhaps if we loved them enough to let that happen they could go into the sun set of one career and into the sun rise of another without depression and drugs or suicide. If we but loved them enough.
