Monica Wyche
In the year she turned 40, Monica Wyche got married, left her career as a high school theatre teacher and moved to New York City to be an actor, proving it's never too late to scare the hell out of your parents. A native South Carolinian, Monica lives on the Upper West Side with her playwright husband and far too many pets. She is expecting her first -- and only -- child any day now, so she has a lot to write about.

(2) Comments | Posted October 9, 2014 | 7:04 PM

In five weeks, I'm traveling from New York City to Charleston, SC to donate one of my kidneys -- the left one, to be exact -- to my friend Erin.

When people learn I'm doing this, they say one of three things, and I kind of bristle at all three.

A Birthday Tradition

Today is my son's first birthday.

Every year on my birthday, my mother calls me -- not just to sing "Happy Birthday," but to recount the story of my birth.

Highlights from the story include:

*High on anesthesia, Mom saw my father and told a nurse, "I think I know...

We had a baby and almost forgot who we were.

In the wake of dozens of parents' Very Best Things being stolen away,

In the wake of All the Cities We'd Never Heard of Before,

Show me.

I'm a Killer Mom.

My husband, baby and I are spending our first weekend away from home at our friend's country house. The home of our baby's godfather, to be more accurate. We envision our son growing up spending relaxing weekends here, enjoying more nature than even Central Park can...

People Are Baby Crazy -- In a Scary Way

(3) Comments | Posted August 13, 2012 | 12:40 PM

This really happened.

As our son is getting older (he's a whopping 6 weeks old now), we've taken him more and more places. We stick close to home and our outings usually consist of dog walks or shopping for more diapers. Or wine.

Last week, we took our baby...

The Parenting Olympics

The whole world has Olympic Fever.

We're all standing united in our new-found love of synchronized diving, skeet shooting and table tennis, sports I wasn't even aware were actual Olympic events.

As a brand new parent, my husband and I are developing impressive knowledge, speed and...

When I was pregnant, my husband and I watched the documentary film Babies. It's a fascinating look at how four different babies are raised in four different parts of the world: Mongolia, Japan, Namibia and San Francisco, California. Each baby is followed for a year, and while there...

Leaving the Apartment: Was it Worth It?

(1) Comments | Posted July 20, 2012 | 3:08 PM

Two days ago, I wrestled with the Ergo baby carrier, our infant son successfully secured inside, and headed out to walk our dog. It marked the first time I've left the house on my own with the baby, and it felt great. Although we only went around the block, I...

We had a baby last weekend, and now he lives with us. His name is Elrod, he makes hilarious faces and he's a very good eater.

I could go on and on about his birth and our feelings and about how our lives will never be the same, but...

Past Our Due Date, and the Pressure Is OFF

(3) Comments | Posted June 25, 2012 | 5:03 PM

Our baby was due three days ago, and we've never felt better.

It's the strangest thing -- as soon as That Date came and went, our lives suddenly became a lot easier. My husband and I find ourselves having actual conversations about non-baby-related topics.

Husband: "Did you read this...

As my due date creeps ever closer (now two days away), I've been thinking back on my pregnancy, and feel there are a few things our little guy should know about this very special time in our lives.

You, Baby, should know that:

1. If I had it to do...

My doula thinks I'm crazy. I thought I might be dying.

A few nights ago, I was sleeping soundly (a rare thing these days), when I was awoken by the sour taste of vomit in my mouth. It was fairly surprising, as A) I typically don't vomit in my sleep,...

Today I locked myself out of my apartment.

It happened exactly the same way as the last time, which was less than a week ago. After dutifully packing my bag full of things a pregnant lady may need for a few hours away from home (snacks, water, sun...
