Morgan graduated from Vassar College and then spent a year in the Netherlands as a Fulbright Scholar, where he received his M.A. in American Studies from Utrecht University. His research involved American cultural influence abroad, with a thesis on the Mexico City Policy (also known as the Global Gag Rule) that restricted USAID and eventually State Department family planning funds from being given to foreign NGOs that performed or "promoted" abortions. He writes on cultural phenomena, political affairs, and whatever else seems interesting. He has been blogging with the Huffington Post since May 2008.

New Republic Editor Evokes Fringe Email "Clinical Narcissism" Smear

Posted October 5, 2009 | 03:03 PM (EST)

Kudos to Joe Klein at Time's Swampland blog for calling out the editor of The New Republic for pegging the president as a "clinical narcissist."He hits back hard, as well he should. Says Klein:

There are solid philosophical arguments that can be made against what Obama is doing....

GOP to Retake House in 2010? Maybe

13 Comments | Posted October 1, 2009 | 04:29 PM (EST)

When House whip Eric Cantor said the GOP would win a landslide in the 2010 midterm elections, I simply laughed out loud. Now, I am not a polling junkie or a professional political operative. But this tells me something: if the GOP doesn't work to actually deserve a shot...

Health Care Reform is the New Gay Marriage

I'm going to go out on a limb here. The Tea Baggers are not just a whole bunch of white racists, comments by Janeane Garofalo to the contrary.

I don't at all disagree that racism is a huge factor in all the outrage.  Garofalo's point, that if these...

FOX Got Holland All Wrong

4 Comments | Posted July 14, 2009 | 05:03 AM (EST)

I've been living in the Netherlands for almost a year and like most other people from the States I showed up intrigued by the legendarily liberal policies in this small Northern European country. FOX News back in 2006 was apparently curious too and ran this clip:

Co-Ed Rooms on Campus

Posted April 28, 2009 | 05:37 AM (EST)

There is a movement afoot at campuses across the country. Its aim? Empower students to pick their roommates, whatever their gender. Some call it "gender-neutral" housing, others "gender-blind." To some people this is radical. It isn't.

At Vassar, my alma mater, I was a leader in our campus movement to...

Bobby Jindal's Time Machine

Posted February 25, 2009 | 03:47 PM (EST)

Dear Governor Jindal,

We're all here in 2009. But you're all over the place! It's like you hopped into a time machine and left your brain with the 2012 election and your tongue back in 2008.

Given your speech after President Obama's address to Congress, it seems like you're following...

When inclusion becomes relativism

Posted December 18, 2008 | 01:58 PM (EST)

President-elect Barack Obama erred in asking Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration. A spokeswoman for Obama implied that the move was made for the sake of "inclusion." But what does it mean to include someone in one of the most symbolic events in recent memory who,...

A new day for all people--but young people, let's not forget tomorrow

Posted November 5, 2008 | 02:02 PM (EST)

In college we learn to be skeptical of claims like the ones being made about Barack Obama's historic victory. For today, forget it. His win really does signal a new day for America and the world. Let's think critically tomorrow, and today let's just enjoy the satisfaction of a hard...

Mike Murphy: Playing the Race Card for McCain

Posted August 3, 2008 | 04:15 PM (EST)

Today on Meet the Press, Mike Murphy called the Paris/Britney/Barack ad stupid. He's completely correct, but that doesn't keep him from tacitly pushing forward the racist language that is being used to discredit Obama.

While David Gergen has said that McCain is using loaded words in his ads to...

Britney's Downfall as Metaphor

Posted July 28, 2008 | 12:09 PM (EST)

As disturbing as it may be, the saga of Britney Spears's downfall serves pretty well as a cautionary tale for young American consumers.

She started out as a cutesy, innocent little girl, playing it fast and loose by asking for us to hit her baby, one more time. Then,...

Will the Media Pick McCain VP?

Posted July 23, 2008 | 10:15 AM (EST)

I don't see McCain backing out of all the insinuations that old age is to blame for his geographic confusion, but it's the media's job to make him try. Recently he's referred to Czechoslovakia three times before catching himself, a country that hasn't existed as such for more than ten...

Facebook and Crackberries: Breeding A Disconnected Generation

Posted June 2, 2008 | 12:04 PM (EST)

I must be an old foagie at heart. Am I really going to protest the evils of Facebook, the problems with iPods and Crackberries and instant email and internet access? I guess I am. I agree (mostly) with people who warn that all these devices and technologies may be better...
