Motohisa Furukawa (46) is a member of the House of Representatives from the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), who has served in the Diet for fifteen years. He was appointed by Prime Minister Noda as the Minister for National Policy as well as the Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy and for Science and Technology Policy last September. He also holds the concurrent posts of the Minister for Space Policy. Before assuming the present posts, he served as the Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary in the Kan Administration after serving as the Senior Vice Minister of the Cabinet Office and the Secretary-General of the National Policy Unit in the Hatoyama administration, which came to power after the historic DPJ election landslide in 2009. Within the DPJ, he also served as the senior Vice Chairman of the “Commission on Social Security and Tax Reform”, the deputy Chairman of the “Tax Reform Project Team”, and the Vice Chairman of the “Research Commission on the Constitution”.

He is the co-chair of the Diet Task Force supporting the activities of the Global Fund, which fights global AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. He is also a founding member of the “TABLE FOR TWO International” non-profit organization dedicated to fighting global hunger and obesity. His personal mottos are “吾唯足知/Ware tada taru wo shiru.” (I am content with what I have) He is married and is the father of a son and a daughter.
