Nancy O’Brien, a former editor on the opinion page of the New York Daily News, teaches yoga at Bellevue’s World Trade Center Clinic as well as in other medical settings in the New York City area. With two collaborators, she has just launched Elder Om Wellness, which will bring yoga, meditation and evidence-based wellness programming to New York City-area senior centers and communities. She is a graduate of Therapeutic Yoga Training and has been involved in Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Initiative, which is dedicated to bringing certified yoga instruction to the hospital setting. Nancy established the yoga component of patient care at Bellevue’s World Trade Center Clinic and the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Program. She also teaches outpatients in the Mind-Body Program of Bellevue’s Medical Psychiatry Clinic and in the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program. She teaches weekly chair yoga as well as bedside yoga at Coler Goldwater, New York City’s specialty long-term nursing and rehab facility. Her workshop, “Yoga for the Third Age,” presented at Integral Yoga Institute, where she teaches a weekly Hatha I class, is focused on imparting the benefits of yoga to those aged 50 and over, exploring the opportunities of “gerotranscendence.” Nancy’s private clients include people living with multiple sclerosis and chronic pain.
