Who's Grooming Who: Makeup and the Modern Male

Posted: 07/30/2010 12:22 pm

How does the modern-day peacock navigate our post-metrosexual age? If the men's collections are any indication, with a full face of makeup. Painted faces turned up at shows including Thom Browne (glitzy gold lips), Yohji Yamamato (Casper-inspired ghostly visages) and Dior Homme (dewy pink pouts). Catwalk theatrics aside, it's clear that men have moved way beyond just borrowing their girlfriend's moisturizer. A recent article in the New York Times reported that men's grooming products had reached sales of $5.6 billion in 2009, up from $3.8 billion in 2004. That's a lot of nasal hair removers.

As a man who works in cosmetics, it should come as little surprise that I have my go-to products. After cleansing and shaving, I use a skin serum, a primer and occasionally a bronzer. I use my Camera Finish powder to stay matte and even a lick of clear mascara on the lashes. A little dab of concealer under the eyes can take years off, so why wouldn't you? The aim is to look healthy, energized and youthful, and, unlike the runway boys, not like you're actually wearing makeup. Little fixes such as these -- not to mention tweezing unruly brows -- can even give men a professional edge. Here are some more grooming tips.

The Shining: A great horror movie and a horrible situation for many men with overactive sebaceous glands. A face that suggests you've been jogging in Central Park is not the right look for clinching the deal. Fortunately, it's easy to stem this flow of oil, and there are lots of mattifying serums on the market. To eliminate shine, I use my Auto Pilot Pore Minimizer & Mattifer in the morning.

Camouflage: Dark under-eye circles and discoloration isn't just a problem for the ladies. Never fear: A little bit of concealer goes a long way. Just find a shade that matches your skin tone. With your pinky -- or digitus minimus to use the more masculine Latin term -- tap product directly under the eye. Smooth the edges with a Q-tip. To conceal a blemish, use a concealer with salicylic acid to also treat the skin.

Bronze Adonis: It's not as widely discussed as it is for women, but men should also be wearing SPF moisturizers. After all, skin cancer doesn't discriminate. To fake a healthy glow, try a hint of matte bronzer in powder or liquid form. There are also aerosol bronzers that are a breeze to apply.

Guy Liner: Think more Russell Brand than Adam Lambert. For those that want to rock eyeliner, work a soft black pencil on the entire length of the inner rim of the eyes. Scribble pencil onto the upper and lower lash lines, and blink to transfer the color. Smudge with your fingers to ensure a raw finish.

If a man wants to wear makeup more power to him. Who doesn't know at least one guy that wears eyeliner?

As a heterosexual female, I say, "Men, take care of your skin with moisturizers if you need to. Proper grooming is also a plus. But, bronzers, powders, and mascara are just going too far. You don't need it. Please don't fall prey to the cosmetic industry trying to make even more money by tapping into a new market. You don't need it. You look great without it."

I agree, but unfortunately as we're getting more and more obsessed with aging, men are getting more insecure too. I too don't like the shiny bronzers and powders, and despise even more the amount of men going under the knife. Many stars, politicians and journalists have done it, and I like none of them. We're becoming a society like that sci-fi movie with the seed pods that steal your mind while you're asleep, and the seed pods had no features. All blemishes, wrinkles and scars were gone, leaving shells. We're becoming shells of ourselves. As far as I'm concerned I'll grow old gracefully, and I've earned every one of my crow's feet!

Goodness, talk about feeding the ego. I would bet wages, the author has a script for anti-depressants.

What should a person say in their micro-bio

Why would I spend EXTRA money on things I have never needed before? This is about mama's boys who have been told by certain fashion types that they should pamper themselves. Its all a big joke to most men.

Now what?

While I've never used any of these products, nor do I use any kind of makeup, this doesn't scare or alarm me. If some guys want to add a little of this and that to make themselves look a little more vibrant and appealing, what's the big freakin' deal? I hear a lot of male insecurity here in some of these posts. Men will never have to use as much paint, grease, mouse, lacquer and dye to make themselves look as pretty as women. Wash all of that off and most women look fairly plain and nondescript. Men are naturally more "beautiful" than women. Look at nature. The Greeks were right.

Yep. The beauty of a man is in his strength.

So "most women look fairly plain and nondescript" without makeup, huh? Glad to hear you've bought the party line! You should see some of the guys in northern Wisconsin if you believe men are naturally more "beautiful."

Cheesehead here. That's why we're "flyover" country.

The only party line I adhere to is my own. If you sincerely believe that the standards of human beauty are not nearly exclusively female in the modern era, you do not understand either the culture you live in nor the history that made it. Talk about a party line! The make-up and personal beauty industries have made gazillions of dollars pushing that standard.

There's a website devoted to showing very famous women both with make-up and without make-up. You can Google it. Take a look at it and get back to me. Even several women have expressed to me exactly the same thing.

a womans perspective; don't go there, it is a huge waste of time and money, you look fine just the way you are

Because then I'd have that stuff on my face. No thanks.

Cut on the bias

I am not a Marboural Man or a gay basher, but makeup on men makes me cringe! Even most gay men don't wear make up. Covering your face with mud is so cro-magnon. Certainly there are better ways to protect yourself from mosquito attack. And plucking your eyebrows should only be used to combat unibrow, if ever. A trim now and then is enough. While I don't really believe in the existence of aliens, I do think men should look like they are from this planet, with human features and even, shudder, sweat on a sunny day. Women have been victimized by the make up industry too much already and men do not need to waste their money and perhaps the health of their skin on this.
08:17 PM on 07/30/2010
I find this rather demeaning for the men who engage in it. It is the product of a culture that has become focused on appearance, androgeny and image. We have lost a certain authentic vitality and vigor which we will pay for later in relation to those competitors who have not.
04:50 PM on 07/30/2010
Hopefully this trend will continue, and men will be freely able to "look like they're wearing makeup" wherever and whenever they choose.... for far too long men have had their aesthetic expression repressed, and it's time for them to step out and display their beauty proudly, openly, and without limits.

Yes! And also real men are brave enough to cry and show their feelings in public.

You want me to do what?
04:29 PM on 07/30/2010
Yikes. I remember when having dirt under your fingernails meant that you were a hard-working American. I think I prefer that to having men with nail polish, but let's not make our children afraid of getting bloddied and brusied outside. Some of the best times I've had in my life have been when I'm covered in sweat and dirt.
