Enough. Enough blood, tears and political gestures. Radicalization is working for terrorists and politicians. That is one of the saddest lesson in the latest terrible murder of a priest in a little church in Normandy. The latest attacks in France, Nice and Normandy, Germany with a series of attacks, Brussels, Ankara, Istanbul, Baghdad...What a bloody summer!
But coming back to France the question is: Could we, should we, keep calm and rational in spite of almost daily terrorist acts, a kind of neighbourhood terrorism? Terrorism of proximity ... Let's try to understand what can push people to commit terrorist acts. Committing a terrorist act has the same procedure as a suicide; several steps and then the final act. Some people never commit the final act but some do, so what is it that triggers the final act? What pushes them to it may not be apparent to you and I, but significant to them.
One has to question the effect of the 24-hour TV news channels. I think that the endless repetition of images and talk of the attacks may create a motivation. Showing the endless images of terrorism, making endless and boring comments on the life of the perpetrator for the sake of feeding airtime, would surely have a negative impact and may affect weak and feeble minds. At the same time this hunger for news and scoops, this mad race and rush for information is hardly compatible with rational examination.
Radicalization is working for terrorists and politicians. A judicial proceeding requires time and reflection and those are blatantly missing right now. In these confusing and dangerous times where should the political voice stand? Howling with wolves? Demanding more and more regulations? Adding and feeding the islamophobia? Lying to the population will not help. Building a compassionate policy? Using compassion as a major political tool will not help either. Creating a new medal of decoration for the victims of terrorism will not help. Such a bad and pathetic signal that France is now engraving the status of the victims of terrorism in marble for eternity is a sign of political demission and resignation.
At the moment in France there is a dual radicalization in process; that of the young Muslims and those who have converted to Islam and are both motivated and pushed by the endless atmosphere of violence and somehow finding the perfect alibi of serving the blood thirsty and nihilist ISIL. And then there is the radicalization of the politicians who want to take advantage of the chaos in this nightmare that France is currently engulfed, particularly as we are campaigning for presidential and parliamentary elections.
The nightmare will come true if politicians don't get responsible.
We are facing a kind of tender or auction to find the one with the most repressive proposal, such as the equivalent of a Guantanamo, jailing people without trial. The people of France deserve a much better policy. People of France deserve a responsible policy that maintains the state of law despite the dramatic situation and threatening atmosphere. People of France deserve peace and security.
Right now the political voice is inaudible through all this noise and furore and is creating a moral and political chaos. It's not the right way to fight the fears and the real terrorism. We are losing our values with some politicians. We are on the verge of a major societal crisis. We are all in the same boat as a potential target of terrorism and at this very precise junctureFrance is sailing towards the National Front (extreme right) harbour. The nightmare will come true if the political class do not face the security issue with responsibility.
