I may be a little late to this party, but Frontline produced a report on the national debt this past summer that puts a lot of American politics into perspective. A whole lot of current policy debates amount to arguing whether to turn to port or starboard on a sinking cruiseliner. This should be required viewing for everyone who wants to talk about politics for the next decde.
For me, the message is clear: our elected representatives (and much of our media) are afraid to look this crisis in the face and talk straight about how to solve it. That means we have to get real about this ourselves, and refuse to be placated. It is up to us to create a political space that is mature enough to deal with this. In a very real way, our country depends on it.
