FBI Found Kenneth Starr Hiding In His Closet

Posted: 05/28/10 03:58 PM ET

Kenneth I. Starr played a game of hide-and-go-seek with prosecutors Thursday morning. Accused of stealing $30 million from clients like Wesley Snipes, Sylvester Stallone, and Martin Scorsese, the financial adviser to the stars was found crouched behind coats in the closet of his Upper East side apartment and yanked out by his collar, according to the AP.

(This Kenneth Starr is not the prosecutor who investigated former President Bill Clinton.)

Mr. Starr, 65, had a number of hiding places to choose from in his $7.5 million condominium, which included 5 bedrooms, 6.5 baths and a 1,500 square foot garden on the main floor, says Dealbreaker. (Pictures of Starr's condo can be viewed here.)

Starr's alleged fraud is "characteristic of a Ponzi scheme," said Robert Beranger, a special agent for the Internal Revenue Service. The investment adviser illegally held clients' assets at the offices of Starr & Company in midtown Manhattan, reports Daily Finance, just blocks away from the old office of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities.

Prosecutors have already started calling Starr a "mini-Madoff," according to New York Times reports :

Much like Bernard L. Madoff, who is serving a 150-year sentence for bilking tens of billions of dollars from his closely knit network of clients, prosecutors say, Kenneth I. Starr of Manhattan cultivated business at charity events and lavish parties, bridging the worlds of New York and Hollywood to build a star-studded client list of socialites, financiers, philanthropists, A-list actors and Hall of Fame athletes.

Also charged is former president of the New York City Council and New York State assemblyman Andrew Stein, who regulators describe as an "associate" of Starr's. Stein allegedly used money from "shell corporations" funded by Starr's clients to pay for personal expenses like a summer home in the Hamptons. The Wall Street Journal notes, "For long time New Yorkers, the real celebrity in the SEC's fraud case against Kenneth I. Starr, an investment and tax adviser, is Andrew Stein."

The reason I quickly clicked this story was that name "Kenneth Starr"...then I lost interest with that disclaimer...."This Kenneth Starr is not the prosecutor who investigated former President Bill Clinton"..I just scrolled down because I wanted to see what everyone else was thinking/saying - we mostly feel the same: darn it...just when I was getting really excited!!!

RE: Found in his closet.

Hard to know what shoes to wear when you are going to jail, right Kenneth? Hope they let you choose something appropriate....a summerry casual look good for slopping aorund in jailhouse pee, but that has a dressy enough appearance for that court appearance before Judge Judy. Decisions, decisions.

Has anybody else but me noticed the remarkable resemblance between justice-dodging Kenneth Starr and Mr Lloyd Blankfein, the well-known Greek aid salesman?
Have they by chance ever been seen in the same room together?

I know this is not THE Kenneth Starr but does anyone else get a guilty little pleasure seeing this name smeared around with such slanderous headlines?

Wow, Kenneth Starr led the persecution of Bill Clinton, and was lead counsel for defending Prop 8, and now we find him in his closet!

Read the story again. This is not Ken Starr of the Clinton investigation. It's some other dude, sorry.

"FBI Found Kenneth Starr Hiding In His Closet"

Are we sure they weren't speaking figuratively? I mean, he is a Republican, after-all

I am elated that our financial fraud lawmen are indicted a few of the small fry in our systemically corrupt finance. What about the bank presidents? Are their crimes so heinously gigantic that they can not be prosecuted? If so, we need new law enforcement personnel.

Gives them something to do, while they avoid going after the real criminals that harmed this entire nation. Priorities, or is it power of the powerful?

RATS! I was hoping it was the OTHER Kenneth Starr! Oh well, one sleazeball on the ropes is almost as good as another. Just don't tease me with a headline of "Cheney Convicted", and follow with a story about Mary Cheney and espousal abuse.

2 Ken Starrs? What did we do to deserve this? Oh, I remember: 2 wars, environmental degradation, holding people who have not committed crimes, and on and on it goes.

Why is it necessary for HP to clarify this is not the same Kenneth Starr from the Clinton prosecution? If you know anything about history you can obviously see it's not the same person. It's not misleading to use a headline that draws more attention to a story. On top of that you have Google, Bing, Yahoo and all kinds of search engines. Get off your lazy butt and use them.

Because not everyone remembers what he looked like or his complete name. It is obvious it was intentionally left out as they quoted the linked NYT piece. They know they can count on many here to skim through without paying attention in the least.

Deceptive headlines in this case incite a reaction. Where have you been? Words grouped in a paragraph by some of the opinion pieces here, in a sentence are paired with quotations. That mere grouping leads many to believe the opinion and quote is fact.

Happens here and other places all the time. The first sentence should of been...This Ken Starr should not be confused with...blah..blah..blah.

It is called being honest. Leaving important data out..not so much. Especially when most here do not have a Ken Starr the prosecutor picture on their desk. The omission was by design. People are lazy..just what is your point?

hiding in his closet ?! that's hollywood material ;o)

First and foremost it should be noted that this Ken Starr was financial adviser to the "stars"....My initial reaction was that they surely got what they deserved. Greed is the bottom line in all these schemes, and if they lose out to unethical schemers like Starr or Madoff so what? They all believed they were special and could have their investments double or triple, while the rest of us schmucks made do with the usual sources. Really, how much more do they need? They already make exorbitant salaries in comparison to most people in the world. GREED has got to stop somewhere; it's really disgusting to hear that this goes on and on...................Ok, so the guy's a weasel and should pay the price for his illegal activity; what I'm trying to say is that he couldn't have made headway if nobody invested with him.
11:43 AM on 05/31/2010
This Ken Starr....(not the former prosecutor who investigated the former Pres. Clinton in his sex case with Monica Lewinsky) should share a cell with the infamous Bernie Madoff who made off with a lot of money that didn't belong to him.
Maybe he was in the closet so he could get used to being confined to a small space.....like a jail cell....
Why do these "white collar" crooks think they are so entitled anyway. Just because the money is there, doesn't mean it belongs to them to further their lavish life style they don't deserve.

Starr had no shame when he was defrauding others, but yet turned into a sissy when the Feds started looking for him. He should have some fun times in prison.
