Fighting Cynicism Without & Within

Posted January 10, 2012 | 23:48:56 (EST)

Last spring, after 14 years as a labor activist, I walked away. After devoting my adult life to building worker power, I hung it up for comedy. I told my comrades, "Peace out, dudes! I'm running away to join the circus. I'm still down for the cause. If the revolution...

What's Funny About Occupy Wall Street?

2 Comments | Posted December 14, 2011 | 11:24:38 (EST)

This year I was on a national comedy tour with my crew Laughter Against the Machine. We set out to be like Doctors Without Borders with jokes. While we were on tour, Occupy Wall Street started. I'm not saying we caused it, just that no one will ever...

San Francisco Mayor's Race 2011, AKA Jonestown 2011

2 Comments | Posted October 20, 2011 | 17:24:47 (EST)

The San Francisco mayor's race feels like a murder-suicide pact between our disproportionately hefty cohort of political operatives and the electorate. Most people don't think of political campaign consultants as the centerpiece of a public works jobs program, but that's the kind of out-of-the-box thinking we San Franciscans are known...

Health Care: I Hate Everyone, Part 2 in a Series, Democrats

Posted October 27, 2009 | 17:09:56 (EST)

It's not obstructionist Republicans or rabid Town Hallers or antediluvian trilobites at Fox News or rapacious insurance operatives or the nasty, brutish and short electorate. Hopealicious "universal health care" became tedious "health insurance reform" because of stupid, spineless, craven Democrats. While Senator Harry "Ambien" Reid's latest public option gambit...

Health Care: I Hate Everyone, Part 1 in a Series

Posted August 19, 2009 | 12:16:10 (EST)

I'm a man without a country -- I hate Republicans, Town Hallers, robber barons, and right-wing windbag fanatics, but spineless and stupid Democrats and liberal pre-emptive capitulators make me want to cut off my big toe with a butter knife.

The yelling and the indignation
at...

Gay Marriage in Iowa? Come on, San Francisco!

Posted April 10, 2009 | 16:19:00 (EST)

As a San Franciscan, I am outraged that we've been out-gayed by Iowa and Vermont. Iowa! Iowa is all corn and no hole, for crying out loud. Take it in: the center of gay liberation is now Iowa. Not a huge surprise, as they elected Tom Vilsack Governor, and he...

If GOP Steals the Election, November 5 May Be the Day Obama Gets Too Black For America

Posted October 29, 2008 | 15:04:00 (EST)

Whilst polls and the unhinged berserker campaign of McCain-Palin signify an avalanche of Obama, an Obamalanche if you will, McCain still could win. I assume that when McCain says "we've got them where we want them," it's more of the same curmudgeonly ranting, but maybe he knows something we don't....

Please Stop Saying "Race Card"

Posted August 25, 2008 | 16:51:04 (EST)

(Reader Advisory: The following contains humor as well as opinion. Proceed with caution.)

Everybody, stop saying "race card." As semi-evolved humanoids, we need to be able to talk about how racism, a colossal disgrace in the history of Western Civilization, might affect an election without reducing it to a breezy...

Of Course Obama Is The One; Not That There's Anything Wrong With That

Posted August 11, 2008 | 17:22:46 (EST)

Unless you've been at a silent meditation retreat for several weeks, or held hostage by kidnappers awaiting ransom, you'll have seen the ad called "The One" by the respectful, issue-based propagandists over at John McCain 2008 HQ.

The ad, which is here, charges that Obama has "anointed himself...

Top 10 Ways Gay Marriage Harms Straight People

Posted July 29, 2008 | 17:53:30 (EST)

California is abuzz over same-sex marriage, as gay marriers swarm the Golden State like so many Castro-ized killer bees in case ruddy-faced values voters kill our buzz with November's constitutional amendment. There's so much to discuss before Melissa Etheridge releases an album of wedding music; before anyone splurges on Palm...
