(1) Comments | Posted May 22, 2012 | 6:22 PM

Today recently had a segment called "Should You Be Friends with Your Boss" addressed the question us lowly employees have pondered since the beginning of time. How much should our bosses really know about us? How much should we tell them? After all, the boss has the all the power....

Will Press Become a Hot Mess?

(0) Comments | Posted May 7, 2012 | 10:34 AM

In 1993, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day, a day dedicated to the rights and protection of journalists. Although 1993 was not too long ago, it was during the down days of dial-up Internet. The days before Twitter, before Facebook, before...

The Job Market: Stand Out or Put Out

(1) Comments | Posted May 1, 2012 | 9:04 AM

I recently bumped into my very fancy-looking, highly-educated, unemployed girl friend who was frustrated about being so fancy-looking and unemployed. Life has not treated her well, she said. "I went to an Ivy league school. I have a master's degree," she explained. "And," she paused, "I'm not 25. I cannot...

On Syria: Does Might Need to Be Right?

(1) Comments | Posted March 15, 2012 | 3:01 PM

When rumors that former Secretary General to the United Nations Kofi Annan was to be the joint special envoy to Syria, the mood at the UN, where I intern, was very good. With Kofi Annan, the end to the horrible crisis in Syria was surely near. The...

Love And Marriage: Are We Settling to Settle Down?

(24) Comments | Posted February 16, 2012 | 10:46 AM

As a woman who has made a career out of dating men beneath her, I can honestly say that when I read the NY Times Op-Ed this past Sunday in which Stephanie Coontz suggested to smart women everywhere the ticket to happily ever after could be pairing off...

Iraq -- Too Much, Too Soon

(13) Comments | Posted December 27, 2011 | 7:18 AM

As the war in Iraq comes to a close, some of us Americans sigh in relief. Finally, it is over. But as an Iraqi-American, I am not quite sure what to make of this war.

While I cannot say that we have won (who did we beat?) -- or...

Reality Bites

Everyone wants to be famous. And anyone who denies this sweeping generalization may just be waiting for their opportunity. There are tons of them. Just the other day I was subjected to hearing a teenager yell to his friends, "Hey, that's how you become famous on YouTube!" These days, anyone...

Can America Speak Muslim?

(2) Comments | Posted August 8, 2011 | 2:49 PM

I recently read an article in the NY Times that announced the simplest and not yet talked about solution to protecting the US against Muslim extremists. How this was possible, I did not know. No one ever strives for simplicity and everyone talks about everything to the...

Bin Laden's Been Dead, Right?

(1) Comments | Posted August 2, 2011 | 12:44 PM

When Osama bin Laden was killed, I thought 'Wow. This is a big moment. The kind of moment that changes everything.' 'Maybe,' I thought, 'just maybe this will be the end of all of the fear. The profiling. The lines at airport security. After all, bin Laden was the...

I'm Pretty. Should I Date Someone Ugly?

(0) Comments | Posted July 22, 2011 | 2:03 PM

I've always dated ugly guys. Mostly because they were so lucky to have me because I'm so pretty. Such benevolence in a person is hard to come by, but I had it. I did. Truthfully, I've always felt fulfilled, committed to my civic duty of allowing these offenses to...

Not Another Immigrant Story

(1) Comments | Posted July 7, 2011 | 10:14 AM

In celebration of American Independence Day, I rolled out of bed, cracked open a Skinnygirl margarita, and proceeded to flip through the channels of network television.

I was in the mood for festive. Recipes for the tastiest potato salad, the danger of fireworks, how to make the...

Give the Arabs What They Want

(25) Comments | Posted June 24, 2011 | 2:36 PM

Last week I read an article of pure praise for the protestors of the Arab Spring and I found myself wanting to throw a TV through a window. At first, I couldn't understand why I had such a violent reaction. Praising protestors is a good thing. I am a...

Weddings: An Invitation for Abuse

(0) Comments | Posted June 20, 2011 | 5:57 PM

If I were ever to fall in love, I think a sheer indication of absolutely no future would be if he asked me to marry him and have a wedding. The guy must be on crack if he thinks such a request would make me 'happy'. And I don't...

I pride myself on being very Cool with the opposite sex. I am not pushy or aggressive; I do not fawn over any guy who simply brushes past me -- unless he does it several times in a public place, preferably during the day where there isn't a hint...

Destination: Baghdad?

(0) Comments | Posted June 3, 2011 | 1:36 PM

Before he went crazy and thought he was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, Saddam Hussein did some pretty okay things; minus the murdering people, minus the bloodshed, minus robbing people of their families. In Iraq, education was free. Health care was free. People could study abroad if they...

Class Is the New Stupid

(20) Comments | Posted May 31, 2011 | 12:14 PM

If I could beat the crap out of people, I would. But I can't. I just can't. I'm from New Jersey, but even that doesn't help my case. I simply cannot express feelings of disgust in public. Perfect example: last week I'm at the mall and these kids shove past...
