For one year, the museum will invite 100 artists -- local, national and global -- to choose individual works of art or galleries that spark our imaginations. There will be five seasons, and I am very excited to be a participant in one of the upcoming seasons!
Recent catastrophes like the lockouts in Minnesota and Atlanta at least brought to the fore questions about how to fund these organizations, what can be cut and what can't be cut, what one community can manage (rather than a cookie-cutter approach), what a community needs and thus will stretch for.
Fear is a great motivator. It gets us out of bed in the morning, it bathes us in adrenaline, and helps keep us on task and grounded. In moderation, fear can be our friend. But fear-based motivation gets toxic and counter-productive.
As I began to orient the programming more toward the building itself, a wave of dread rippled out, first to colleagues in the classical music world, then to the audience. Change was coming, and the humans were not happy.
