The Confederate Battle flag -- an emblem of hate, bigotry and racism -- was lowered in South Carolina earlier this month. While taking down this banner of oppression is a good step, it's really nothing more than a symbolic gesture.
As Jews, we particularly understand what it means to be targeted because of our religion. But, too many of us living in America have allowed the glaring disparities of income, education, health care, and the administration of justice to fester.
The proposed bill establishes a new coverage formula that will affect at least four states that have violated federal law in the last fifteen years. Unlike its predecessor, this coverage formula is based on more recent voting rights violations rather than decades old registration and turnout data.
