As Naja settles in, I start to see how the abuse has hurt him. Any quick movements make him jump; any attempts to pet his head cause him to flinch. I have my work cut out for me, as I want him to trust and feel secure.

I started to think about the relationship between the gay community and rescue animals. Personally, keeping my gay identity secret for 18 years made me more empathic to the "underdogs" of society -- and there is no more heroic underdog than the shelter pet.

it is heartbreaking to see wonderful pets staying in shelters day after day, year after year -- just because they are too large or too shy, have broken limbs, or are the "wrong" color.

I have a thing for rescue. Put in certain circumstances I act before I think, especially when crises involve animals. It's a reflex.
