When asked, "What would you want an audience to take away from this film?" Pulitzer prize winning writer, Tracy Letts, responded, "I don't know. I have no idea how to answer that question." That statement of ambiguity justifies the existence of film critics.
"I'm not bold enough to put myself up there so nakedly. So I pass all my inner stirrings through to the characters and the situations they're in. I am none of those people. But I've handed off to them what I've been consumed by in my life."
After some success with his short film, In the Name of the Son, Harun kept crisscrossing the country, traveling ceaselessly as he'd done since landing in the United States, taking pictures of landscapes and skies.
"I am really strongly influenced by my environment, by where I am in the world, where I'm working, places I travel to, and the weather, and the atmosphere in general. So that's what makes the music cinématic, I think."
Holy Motors is two things: a love note to performance and a love note to cinema. It's an episodic film with dreamy bookends, a few winks at other films and the current state of cinema and audiences, laid at the altar of a very committed actor.
On this day we celebrate Adrienne's life, her accomplishments and the legacy she's left behind. It is in her honor that I started the Adrienne Shelly Foundation with a singular mission: to support women filmmakers.
