After imposing a "full embargo" on imports from the West, Russia has made it clear that the latest sanctions are politically motivated. Russians are likely to lose access to certain items that have long stopped being viewed as Western luxuries.
For years Americans have assumed that our hard-charging capitalism is better than the soft-hearted version found in Canada and Europe. American capitalism might be a bit crueler but it generates faster growth and higher living standards overall.
American capitalism today is not a rosy panacea, nor can it be simply defined. It is multidimensional, and there exists within it two pairs of diametrically opposed constituencies: the "floats all boats" capitalists and the "zero-sum gamers."
There is nothing inherently wrong with making lots of money but the present abuses of the capitalist system need to be fixed. Among other things, the wealth that is being accumulated needs to be earned honestly.
