Leading Democrats in Washington have joined Republicans in claiming that the people killed and the dwellings destroyed from Israeli bombing and shelling were legitimate acts of self-defense against military targets and dismissing reports by reputable Israeli and international human rights groups saying otherwise.
Scratch beneath the surface of apparent peace in El Salvador and you will find a hidden war being waged. A war that does not involve guns or troops but one that has still resulted in the unnecessary deaths and disability of thousands and the incarceration of others. A war being waged against women and girls.
The US administration, concerned about this move's impact on the moribund peace process, has urged the Israeli government to reverse its decision. But if a peace process is to have any chance of success, its sponsors, and the USA in particular, must recognize that the settlements are more than a diplomatic obstacle.
