Going to court without a lawyer can be a risky business for anyone, and especially for someone who has been abused. Yet, when we don't provide the legal services victims of domestic violence need, that is what we are asking them to do.
Kathy's counselor helped her realize that the trauma of her childhood sexual abuse had resurfaced because she was now bringing her own child into the world. With therapy, Kathy was able to come to terms with the abuse and finally begin to heal.
Domestic violence is learned behavior. When society looks away or treats it as a private matter, it reinforces the behavior. By taking a stand against abuse, employers can lead the way to a society free of domestic violence.
Unaccompanied minors have risked their lives to find safety in our country. And I urge you to speak out on their behalf, so that everyone has a better understanding of their plight and the need for a more proactive, thoughtful and compassionate response to this humanitarian crisis.
