Perhaps the AP is scared of using the terms "husband" and "wife" for legally married same-sex partners in text that is not attributed speech because its seems like a political act. Refusing to use the terms, however, is also a political act that reinforces inequality.

When my husband and I were legally married, we were married as husband and husband. Describing these relationships in any other way isn't just legally inaccurate; it's offensive and deeply disrespectful. It tells us that our marriages are somehow unworthy of the term.
